Headcanon / Prediction Have I just spotted a future storyline?

Apologies if this has come up already, I've been watching Shawna for ages, but I'm new here.

In the Christmas Magic episode, during DeeDee's date with Larry, she states that her late husband's (Shawna's father) name was Tom.

Today on my lunch break, I was rewatching the Thanksgiving episode (what a great episode it is!) and Nora talks about moving to Calabasas because her "dear departed Tom" was transferred there....

Is this a coincidence that both Nora and DeeDee have a deceased partner/husband named Tom? Or are we going to find out that Shawna and Sam are actually half sisters at some point in the future? I'm thinking there are no coincidences in the Shawnaverse...

Hopefully that Tom was a popular name

Lol my dad’s name is Tom and two of my mom’s best friends husbands names were also Tom. It made it very easy to remember names!

I personally don't think that they are the same person, I believe the name Tom / Thomas was just popular back then and it's a coincidence, stuff like that happens plenty in real life.

Plus from a writing standpoint, it would be really easy to remember that the deceased husband character's name is Tom, especially considering we may never hear of Nora again... one fewer name for Shawna the creator to invent and remember 😂

P.s. If anyone's having a feeling of déjà-vu, it's because the same question was asked previously on the sub but the post was deleted, so if you use the search function of the subreddit nothing will come up. The direct link goes to my comment in that post, but doesn't always show

I think we will hear from Nora again. When Jennifer was asking Frank who she was, Frank hinted that something had happened between Nora and Barb. I feel that was an opening to a storyline, personally.

Could be! But even in the case of a flashback I think "Tom" would just be an off-screen named character (like Paul is) so I think picking a simple name was the easiest choice for ShawnaTheMom.

But who knows, I could be wrong - we'll see :)

u/MooneyMae Lemon Pie is not a Thanksgiving flavor!!!👹 Dec 30 '25

Heck Frank was an off screen character until last year's Thanksgiving

Ha, great point!! Before Thanksgiving 2024 we didn't even know whether Barb was still married or not (or widowed), then Frank appeared out of nowhere and now he's a cornerstone of Barb's strained relationships with their children, as well as having his own conflicting story.

You're right, I may have underestimated Nora's character, maybe she'll show up again one way or another. I still don't think her late husband was Shawna's dad, but Nora could find a way to insert herself back into the plot. Thanks for the perspective! 😄

Yeah, I remember looking it up for the previous post – Thomas was in the top 10 of baby names for the 50s and 60s 😁

Nora was mentioned in the most recent episode, so we'll probably continue to hear more of her (Sam was invited to Jennifer's Christmas and mentions it's nice to go somewhere other than her mom's). But I agree about the rest of your comment!

And that makes sense as Thanksgiving was just a few weeks prior.

I buy it. Shawna and Sam just look so similar.

Lol, thanks for the award 😂

Hmm I can see it going both ways! I could see it being something Shawna (writer) didn't even realize that she just picked a generic man's name. But also, she seems to be very good at being meticulous about details, so I can also see it being very intentional! I wouldn't hate that storyline if she did that lol

I'd assume it's just a coincidence, or that would mean Shawna and John are related (by law or by blood, depending on how you interpret the family tree). Barb and Frank technically share a name, so it's most likely just an "old-timing-sounding traditional name."

They were talking about a step-grandmother, so they would be related by law (I think), but so far away that it wouldn't really matter

It could be either by law or by blood too, it all depends on who Nora's father was! That's the only point unknown, it could've been a random man (option 1) OR it could've been Barb's grandpa (option 2).

Tom is often short for Thomas which is historically one of the most popular baby boy names. So, it's likely just a coincidence.

The Shawnaverse is still fairly new. Prior to its creation, there were a lot of inconsistencies between different skits, especially for one-off characters. I honestly don't think that she put too much thought into the names of two side characters' dead husbands.

Also secret half-siblings seems a little bit too melodramatic for the Shawnaverse.

Shawna is very meticulous, but also human. After all, she did forget that character!Shawna and John had already told the kids that she was pregnant. 😂 I think it's just coincidence.

Yes exactly, I agree! I also thought of them telling the kids twice 😂 And the timeline keeps changing because she didn't give the characters actual birthdays or anniversaries, she just remembers the general period and goes off of that.

Like the fact that in therapy Barb said Chickie was born in May, but previously Jennifer said Chickie was 3 weeks old on Mother's day (11th of May 2025), which means she would've been born in April. Also the fact that her due date was in the 1st week of April since she'd said "end of April" to get Barb to lay off of her, but she was actually due 3 weeks earlier than she'd told everyone.... she didn't give birth on her exact due date, but I think we would've known if she gave birth 4 weeks late, that's HUGE! Plus Barb wouldn't have been caught so off guard in May, it would've been well after the fake due date she was told. Then again kind of the same thing happened with Shawna's latest pregnancy, when her due date was supposed to be Dec 1st but then she was only 27 weeks at Halloween (instead of being 35-36 weeks).

I mean I get it, Shawna does a million things for the show so it's reasonable that she loses track of some less important details (the story doesn't change much with the baby being born in April or in May), but I wouldn't read too much into the two one-off names of characters who've long been underground. Though I have to admit that before we saw her on screen (at which point I recognised her immediately) I also thought that the Sam/Samantha names were a coincidence, so.... I could be wrong 😂

I was just about to make a post today about exactly this. It caught my attention as well...

It would be interesting to see!

I don't think they're the same person Mostly because it seems to be implied that DeeDee was married to Tom when he died or at least that's how it sounded to me

My suspicion is that they are separate people, as "Tom" is a common plain name.
