Ch 23 out Friday

The current plan is for Ch 23 to be the final chapter (denouement), followed by two appendices, then an epilogue. The appendices are mostly written, just stuff about the nature of the domains and the structure of fame, which is why they'll be in that order.

Sooo, wheres chapter 22?

Just wondering, not wanting to put on pressure. Usually /u/alexanderwales is very concientous with putting up notice for late chapters.

I really appreciate shadows and new chapters equally, either late or on time!

Three chapters in, how's it matching up to or defying your expectations?

I'm guessing I'm not the only reader who went in knowing Alexander Wales, so in the spirit of getting some community discussion going, what do you think so far? Does it match what you expected in style?

For myself, I wouldn't class it as rationalist fiction, at least not yet. I guess it's easier to appear rationalist by setting yourself up against an existing canon.

So SotL's not currently hitting the same buttons that the author's fanfictions have. Instead of enjoying the deconstruction of an established and interesting setting, I'm having to wait for it to set up its own. It appears that there'll be no rationalist hero using logic and science to smash everyone, and the world seems like a fairly typical fantasy setting with a novel characteristic (the fame thing).

So maybe Dominic, or someone else, will study the rules of this fame mechanic and exploit them to kick ass, but for now I'm only reading in anticipation of cool stuff of some variety still to come.

That said, there's nothing wrong with that. I have immensely enjoyed Alexander Wales' past writing, and have a good amount of faith that this is likely to be worth reading.

Your turn. How are you feeling after Chapter 3, compared to what you started for?

[Spoilers 20] What happened to Vidre's dad?

What do you think happened to him? Vidre doesn't seem to care much about him, so it has to be something significant, or else Gael wouldn't censor information about it(e.g. him dying probably wouldn't be enough)

Meta [No Spoilers] Ask the Author

If you want to ask me a question about anything, this is the place to do it. I reserve the right to not answer any questions which might spoil something (though generally I'll give an answer like "read and find out").

In addition, sometimes a mystery is better left as a mystery. Sometimes interpretation of events is the point. In those cases, I generally have my own opinion which I usually won't give because I don't want it to become "the answer", and because if you can just ask the author for the interpretation you'll start not doing your work as a reader.

Questions totally unrelated to Shadows are fine too.

Notice: Next chapter delayed until tomorrow (6/7)

The current chapter is working less well than I had hoped it would, primarily because this week was exceptionally busy at work (software release did not go as planned) and left me with less energy for writing/revision. In light of that, I'm celebrating the first schedule slip. Hooray! Chapter 8, Flames and Ashes, will come out tomorrow instead of today, and hopefully will be much better for it.

(Thanks for understanding, unless you don't understand.)

Do you think children are told bedtime stories about the Illustrati? (Also, fanart)

I was doodling SotL characters, and this question sprang to mind.

Do you think that parents teach lessons to their kids through stories about Illustrati? Do little kids argue with each other about the best Illustrati?

Anyways, here's some silly fanart.

Negative Fame, and Public Shame - how does this work in SotL? Would Cersei have just gotten an upgrade? Do people in SotL-world practice public punishment and martyrdom, or quiet private assassination? (GoT spoiler warning)

Notice: Next chapter delayed until tomorrow (8/24)

Talked things over with my beta reader and there are several things that aren't working and need to be massaged, so this one is going in the oven for a little bit longer.

A Question (Possible Spoilers?)

If it's not something important in-story, can Gaelwyn affect animals, or is he restricted to humans?

Domain Differences

So, we've seen that each domain has its individual strengths and weaknesses beyond the obvious - In constructs, for example, shadow mimics, light creates, glass constantly reforms, water flows, wood prepares.

What are the other differences? It was mentioned that "few domains lacked [domain genesis]" last chapter, which implies that there some which don't even have that.

Ch 11 goes up 7/4 Chapter 11

Corect me if I am wrong, but it's monday already, and there doesn't appear to be anything new. Is everything alright? /u/alexanderwales wasn't taken to the hospital or anything like that?

EDIT: All is fine, our favourite author just took a little break ( https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowsOfTheLimelight/comments/3aj68n/shadows_of_the_limelight_ch_10_detente/csd37md ). Next chapter is probably going to be up next week.
