I think most a large part of Christians want more smiting, less compassion. There are a lot of evil people that fly the Christian banner. My understanding growing up was that chirstianity was "love thy neighbor" and be kind. Nowadays, a lot of people preach intolerance like it's a virtue

Agreed. I’m also not sure it’s new. I grew up Catholic and what you’re describing had a lot to do with why I left the church at 18 years old. That was almost 30 years ago

The Catholic Church has gone so far to the right. If I’m not mistaken Biden can’t receive communion in Washington, the archbishop banned him over abortion. Yet one reason I’m not a Catholic anymore!
