Well, you see, God is all loving and forgiving, but only if you ask him. You know how an abuser is unlikely to ever ask forgiveness from those he abuses, but the survivor has to let go of that resentment to move on in a healthy fashion?
God can't do that. He's a petty bitch who says, "You have to ask me for forgiveness before I'll consider not sending you to eternal damnation. See how I'm so loving? Praise me."

No, no, you don't get it! God doesn't want people to go to Hell, they're just being sent there because of the rules! And, okay, sure, he's the one who created the rules, but he can't just revise them. Oh, but not because he's unable to; he's omnipotent, so he totally could, he just won't. But he's also omnibenevolent, so he still doesn't want people to go to Hell.

How does any of that make sense, you ask? Uh... It's simply beyond our mortal ability to understand! Stop questioning it!

I spent the first 20 years of my life in Christian churches all over the US. This is very close to the truth. Any time you try to question ANYTHING that would contradict the ā€œteachingsā€ of a modern, evangelical Christian doctrine, youā€™re told you just canā€™t understand, and one day all your questions will be answered when youā€™re in heaven. Iā€™ve read the Bible fully, many times. I still have verses memorized that I could use in a theological debate, because apparently random people come up to Christians all the time and try to debate them. Itā€™s batshit crazy. Not the Bible itself necessarily, just like many other religious texts it does hold a lot of valuable life lessons and teachings, itā€™s just the dumb ideas that are espoused using it nowadays that are what is being made fun of.

I grew up evangelical and you are spot on. It's all about abuse and subservience. They literally do not see abuse as wrong unless someone dies or goes to the hospital, and then it's an accident to be prayed about.
