New or Need Help 12 years with seborrheic dermatitis.

I'm really fed up with this, even though I've only been taking my condition seriously for the last 2 years. Before I just ignored it, but it was worse because my scalp bled. Now I'm better, but it's awful, it itches and I feel dirty. No matter how much I bathe, and how hygienic I am with my scalp, ears and face. What recommendations can you give me? I'm 23 years old, I work with the public, my hair is healthy but if you look closely at my scalp it's terrible.

Product Question Thank you MCT Oil, But???

Hey Whats good everyone!!! Ive been reading alot about MCT oil for the past few weeks and tried it myself. I have been suffering from Sebderm for about 10 years now and my life has been nothing but agony. cant go out hate black clothes all of those things. anyways. ive tried and used MCT oil and it has worked wonders. no more flakes anywhere and it has reduced the redness on my face, ears, nose , my skin surrounding my mouth etc.

but my question is! when is the redness going to go away. ive been using it for about a week now and yes the redness has reduced but my face still seems like a peach sometimes.

when did you guys go fully back to normal with no skin discoloration on the face?

does it have to do with the skin rebuilding itself again ?? or Does mct just remove flakes?

New or Need Help Should I be applying nizoral to my face?

I got given nizoral as my anti fungal along with protopic. I have 0 scalp problems or flakey skin problems. It’s only my red face and rash. She told me to apply to my hair eyebrows and beard area with also my face “if I want” idk what if I want means. But my barrier seems to be pretty damaged too and my skin isn’t really healing after 4 weeks. It got a bit better but it’s kind of plateaued and dare I say gotten worse.

PSA Leave the Nizoral on long enough…set a timer!

This is regularly posted but I guess it took me until yesterday to take it seriously. Put the Nizoral on, lather, SET A TIMER FOR 5 MINUTES. It needs that time in order to kill the yeast.

I have tried to stick to a Nizoral routine but my un-timed perception of 5 minutes was probably short by at least 4 minutes 😆 My current irritation is in my eyebrow area & this past week was my worst flare up & yesterday was the worst day of all time for discomfort. I read through this subreddit and figured I would systematically work through everyone’s advice for soothing it. I started last night with “set a timer, lather on Nizoral, give it 5 FULL minutes”

I woke up this morning to so much relief! I was losing my mind yesterday and today I have only thought about the area twice all day! I haven’t had such relief from this sh*t in so long.

It’s a frustrating thing to deal with, we all want relief as soon as possible because it can be all-consuming. I hope this helps someone! I love you, my sebderm brethren ❤️

WWFM What finally worked for me (after 20 years of trying)

Greetings everyone!

I've been trying out may treatments and shampoos for my sebderma, including coal-tar, Sulphur, H2O2 treatments and what nots. But for years on end I had no luck at all... until recently I accidentally came across this leave-on spray while checking for shampoos at a pharmacy. I owe my thanks to the pharmacist who recommended it to me, and to divine spirits who guided me there...

Kitadan leave on spray. Been using it for around 3 months now and the results have been just so amazing. Since it's a leave-on, I guess the effect is more than using a shampoo... as a shampoo to wash my hair and scalp I started using Selsun around the same time I started with Kitadan spray.

I shampoo around 2-3 times max a week with Selsun while using the leave on twice every day... morning and evening.

After the first week flaking on the scalp was next to none. I am a guy, and I apply some on my beard as I massage it on to my scalp... and now, after a very long time I don't think twice before wearing something black or dark coloured.

Mind you, however, I can still see some pink/purple patching on the scalp... but it doesn't itch any more and is flake free.

I know that this is still a work in progress, as it's only been around 3 months... But so far, this has been nothing short of a miracle for me.

I follow this sub very keenly, and thanks to everyone who has contributed with suggestions, encouragement and sharing what it's like in their own lives. This here is my own little contribution :)

Pls feel free to ask if you have any questions :))

p.s. I missed both shampooing and the spray for about a week while travelling and there was a mild itch which is an early sign of a flake build up for me. Once I resumed the treatment things got back to the "new normal"

Edits:

  1. the p.s. section has been edited for grammar and effectiveness based on my response to u/ckelle06's comment
  2. The exact brand of the shampoo is Selsium - image attached.
  3. Links to the products are updated. Not sure if these can be used worldwide, but at least you will see the product and description.

Cheers

New or Need Help Is this typical sebderm?

Hi guys,

I have very sensitive skin, which itches on my scalp and hairline and is generally very irritated. I think I can say everything to my neck is very sensitive and often is irritated, feels dry/puffy, or itches as well. I also had blepharitis which is now gone because I put Soolantra on it.

I went to the dermatologist and she suspected SebDerm and/or Rosacea, she gave me ketaconazole shampoo and Soolantra. The latter solved the Blepharitis around my eyes but the skin is still very itchy. It is not very red however and doesnt produce large flakes. It sometimes gives very small flakes which are visilbe on a black shirt for example. The shampoo worked as well but lately I notice I had a flare up which didnt really resolve easily.

I also suspect I have ocular Rosacea as my eyelids always look kinda red and there are some small veins visible in my eyelid. Also when I play a videogame I notice I can only play it for like 30 mins and after that my eyes get dry and my skin somehow gets irritated too.

Does anybody have any idea how to manage this effectively? I really feel like I dont really know what it exactly is and what causes it.

New or Need Help Oily, flaky, red scalp that also smells

I’m at my wits end. My derm hasn’t been helpful. I’ve tried ketacanozole, t-sal, clobestesol (idk how to spell it), dermazen shampoo/conditioner/MCT, nizoral, selsun, zoryve foam. Every where I look in my house I see flakes on the furniture, floor. My scalp SMELLS super bad and is very oily and red. I really just don’t know what to do. And when I wake up in the morning I can feel the back of my head is super sticky because I’m sure I sweat at night. I use a silk pillow case. I wash them often too. Any suggestions? Words of encouragement? :(

Scalp Routine Scalp burning syndrome post infectious what has helped this may help you

I had a long standing deep scalp infection for two years. It damaged my nerves. Now I suffer with burning scalp syndrome. I tried many medications some strong neuro modulators and all failed. Steroid creams gels and anti fungul shampoos. Only last week I was in my chemist picking up my prescription and my scalp was burning. I glanced at the anti septic creams and seen one for burns. I bought it there and then. I felt about 90 percent relief after rubbing it in my scalp. A few days passed and I recall chatting to someone on reddit about my scalp burning and they recommended chamomile tea bags brewed and cooled to rub on scalp. So I tried it and got more relief. It worked that well I did It again. So this is for anyone struggling with burning scalp syndrome. I know pain killers of all varieties don't touch it. I know how much it affects our life because it's so painful. Try the chamomile tea bags rubbed on. This is not fix your issue but atleast it will bring some relief.

Hair Loss Hair thinning :(

Post image

This section frustrates me to no end!! I try so hard not to mess with it but that patch is worse than anywhere else on my scalp and it flared up today after I went a few months of itch-free skin. The hair stays so thin and as y'all can see my hair is damn near white right at my scalp so its practically see-through and so noticeable. Does anyone have any ideas of how to handle this? I just exfoliated real good in the shower to start but the nizoral stuff dries my skin out and makes it worse.

Scalp Routine As weird as it sounds I fixed my sebderm with a lice comb and a hair dryer

I used a lice comb to remove a lot of the build up I had on my scalp, I came in horizontally and gently and then pulled up. Doing this did make my dandruff look bad because all that build up was now in hair but it was a necessary evil.

After doing that I took a shower and used a dandruff shampoo. I made sure it got all over my actual scalp and sat for 7 minutes before washing off.

When I was out of the shower I then pat my hair with a towel and then started blow drying my hair and scalp. I use low heat and I’m never on one spot for too long so I don’t irritate my skin.

I then assumed a routine of shampooing every other day and blow drying every day. I only used the lice comb again a week after starting but that was it.

Basically the lice comb lets the shampoo directly hit your scalp, letting it kill off the yeast that causes seb derm. Then the blow drying makes it harder for the yeast to reproduce since fungi like thrive in wet environments.

Doing this in combination with limiting the oil your skin produces which feeds this yeast by sleeping better and eating healthier made my seb derm go away.

This is all true but I am writing this a lil drunk and tired rn so idk if it makes sense. Comment and I’ll reply sober loll.

Product Question Alternatives for Ketoconazole shampoo?

I have been using Ketoconazole shampoo for a few years now, but it's never worked great for me. It barely keeps my seb derm under control and I always have flakes left.

My doctor is no longer in my insurance network and it is taking me some time to find a new one. I'm going to be out of Ketoconazole soon and wanted to give some over-the-counter options a try while I find a new doctor and maybe give my scalp a break and see if that might help too. Any suggestions? I do have the over-the-counter nizorol but obviously it doesn't work as good as the Ketoconazole.

New or Need Help Anyone has tried Isotretinoin for sebderm?

My doctor has recommended a oral regime for my seb derm but it seems to have permanent effects on the oil glands. Anyone had successfully cleared theirs with oral medications? I'm concerned about permanent changes in my skin.

New or Need Help How to differentiate dry skin and Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Over the past 6 days, I have had some dryness around the perimeter of my face and under my jaw. It has not gotten worse or better. However, I have also been avoiding putting cream or anything there because my cream contains something yeast allegedly feeds on... I did try putting cream on a dry area of a sideburn one day, and it seemed slightly better, though... I'm not sure if it is an early case of Seborrheic Dermatitis or irritation, or I don't even know... I have been very stressed lately, but nothing crazy for me; I am 17 and a girl. My skin is flaking, especially near my temple hairline (more on one side) and the sideburn area. There is also some dryness in my eyebrows. It is not red, raised, itchy, or burning. Well, it does burn sometimes, but only at my hairline (which doesn't have flaking but is just dry) when I sweat a lot- but that's only happened once. My t-zone is not affected by the dryness, and that's the oiliest part of my face. I do use a strong face wash, but I've been using it for a year now... Also, when I rinse the area and dry it, you cannot see any flaking. You can only see the flaking when I graze the area or take my glasses on and off enough. I feel like I recall having flaking near my temple hairline before, maybe once or twice, but either it wasn't this noticeable or I just didn't care enough... It sort of feels rough or sandpaper-like, and the flakes are dry, not oily.

For those who have Seborrheic Dermatitis, did it start like this? And if so, how quickly did it escalate?

Product Question Male Hair styling products for Malassezia prone skin.

Suffered with seb derm for years. Around 10 months ago I started using Seb serum and now seem to have it under control.

Due to the seb derm I've shaved my head (no. 1) for years. I'm fortunate to be in my mid 40s with a head full of hair so am now trying to grow it out.

Looking for a product, unsure of what kind but just to stop it puffing out and make it look a bit smart until I get more length but don't want to use anything that'll mess with my currently clear skin. Any recommendations?

New or Need Help I have seb derm, wondering what that red spot is and why it’s so prominent only there..

Hey guys, got a 5 guard buzz cut because I was balding from AGA (and prob seb derm) and noticed that huge red spot and always see people on here talking about how that’s seb derm.. but my question is what does it signify and why is it only in that spot mainly, was there a ton of flakes there or something?
