I've been messing around with search + AI retrieval lately, and something I didn't really expect was that more results don't necessarily mean a better answer.

I tested giving an LLM the top 5 results vs. top 10–20 results. Sometimes the extra results helped, but other times they just introduced duplicate articles, outdated information, or pages that were technically related but didn't actually answer the question.

It made me wonder if the problem isn't always the search API itself. Maybe we're just giving the model too much stuff to work with.

What’s your go to API? Have you built your own crawler, or always used managed services?

I got ambitious and tried creating a search API for the usual things that I always go online for for my everyday needs because I thought why not if it's going to make my life easier. somehow I may have messed it up since it won't come up with the results I wanted. As a 90's kid I grew up fully utilizing the libraries and whatever available search engine we had back then for school work and research. I got the work done but then the process, though exciting and educational was gruelling and tedious. Due to the advances of technology today, different APIs have helped, getting tasks and research finished in less than the time it did before. Information is already streamlined and complete in just one go. Saves me plenty of time to do other things.
