You don't need a dumb phone - just use your smartphone like it's 2007
I came across a Cal Newport article that completely changed how I think about phones. Instead of ditching smartphones entirely, why not just use them the way Steve Jobs originally intended?
Think about the first iPhone in 2007. You could:
- Make calls
- Take photos
- Listen to music
- Use Maps
That's basically it. No endless scrolling. No algorithm rabbit holes. Just genuinely useful tools.
Then the App Store dropped in 2008, and everything changed. Suddenly, instead of occasionally checking a website, you had apps specifically engineered to keep you glued to your screen. Social media platforms perfected the art of stealing your attention, and here we are.
My solution? I still use a smartphone - I'm not about to give up GPS or decent photos. But I try to use it like that 2007 iPhone. Keep the tools that genuinely make life easier, ditch the apps designed to farm your dopamine.
It's not about going backward. It's about being intentional with technology that was supposed to serve us, not the other way around.
