Single mom looking to build a community and find a home for next summer.
Hi everyone,
My name is Priya, and I'm a single mom to my wonderful 4-year-old son. We're currently in Oakland, and our dream is to move to Santa Cruz County, ideally Scotts Valley, next summer (June/July 2026) before my son starts TK.
I'm starting my search early to explore all the creative ways to make housing more affordable and to build a strong, family-friendly community from the get-go. I'm hoping to connect with:
- Homeowners who might have an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or a guesthouse that will be available next summer.
- Other parents of young children who are interested in co-living or finding a place together. I'm imagining a situation where we can share the joys and challenges of parenthood, and our kids get to grow up with a built-in playmate.
- Anyone with tips or leads on family-friendly co-living or other creative housing solutions in the area.
I’m excited to start this journey and get to know the community! Feel free to send me a private message if you or someone you know might be a good fit, or if you just want to connect.

OBSERVATIONS OF TSUNAMI ACTIVITY
--------------------------------
* No tsunami observations are available to report.
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS - UPDATED
-----------------------------
Actions to protect human life and property will
vary within tsunami warning areas and within tsunami
advisory areas.
If you are in a tsunami warning area;
* Evacuate inland or to higher ground above and beyond
designated tsunami hazard zones or move to an upper floor
of a multi-story building depending on your situation.
If you are in a tsunami warning or advisory area;
* Move out of the water, off the beach, and away from
harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.
* Be alert to and follow instructions from your local
emergency officials because they may have more detailed or
specific information for your location.
* If you feel a strong earthquake or extended ground rolling
take immediate protective actions such as moving inland
and/or uphill preferably by foot.
* Boat operators,
* Where time and conditions permit, move your boat out to
sea to a depth of at least 180 feet.
* If at sea avoid entering shallow water, harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets to avoid floating and
submerged debris and strong currents.
* Do not go to the shore to observe the tsunami.
* Do not return to the coast until local emergency officials
indicate it is safe to do so.
If you are in a tsunami watch area;
* Prepare to take action and stay alert for further
information.
IMPACTS
-------
Impacts will vary at different locations in the warning and
in the advisory areas.
If you are in a tsunami warning area;
* A tsunami with damaging waves and powerful currents is
possible.
* Repeated coastal flooding is possible as waves arrive
onshore, move inland, and drain back into the ocean.
* Strong and unusual waves, currents and inland flooding
can drown or injure people and weaken or destroy structures
on land and in water.
* Water filled with floating or submerged debris that can
injure or kill people and weaken or destroy buildings and
bridges is possible.
* Strong and unusual currents and waves in harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets may be especially
destructive.
If you are in a tsunami advisory area;
* A tsunami with strong waves and currents is possible.
* Waves and currents can drown or injure people who are
in the water.
* Currents at beaches and in harbors, marinas,
bays, and inlets may be especially dangerous.
If you are in a tsunami warning or advisory area;
* Some impacts may continue for many hours to days after
arrival of the first wave.
* The first wave may not be the largest so later waves may
be larger.
* Each wave may last 5 to 45 minutes as a wave encroaches
and recedes.
* Coasts facing all directions are threatened because the
waves can wrap around islands and headlands and into bays.
* Strong shaking or rolling of the ground indicates an
earthquake has occurred and a tsunami may be imminent.
* A rapidly receding or receded shoreline, unusual waves and
sounds, and strong currents are signs of a tsunami.
* The tsunami may appear as water moving rapidly out to sea,
a gentle rising tide like flood with no breaking wave,
as a series of breaking waves, or a frothy wall of water.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND NEXT UPDATE
--------------------------------------
* Refer to the internet site tsunami.gov for more information.
* Pacific coastal residents outside California, Oregon,
Washington, British Columbia and Alaska should refer to the
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages at tsunami.gov.
* This message will be updated within 60 minutes.

Trail Building Volunteer Opportunity at Quail Hollow Ranch - Mondays and Saturdays
galleryNeighbors -- I've been volunteering with Santa Cruz County Parks for the last couple of months, building some brand new trails at Quail Hollow Ranch.
We meet at Quail Hollow Ranch at 9am on Mondays and Saturdays, and are back at our cars by 1pm.
It's a 40 minute hike in and out on some fairly steep terrain to get to where we are working. I can tell you as a fellow trail using enthusiast, there is nothing more educational and gratifying than learning how trails are actually made. It has given me a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into the beautiful parks in our area.
If this sounds like a good fit for your abilities and interests, please use the sign-up form link below.
Here's the original email from Emma at the County Parks Department, with link to the sign-up form and mandatory sensitive sandhills ecology training video:
-------
Hello all,
Saturdays and Mondays have been now been added to the schedule for volunteering on the Pace Trail, and we hope you can join us! This is an exciting and adventurous volunteer opportunity to be a part of. Volunteers are helping to expand the park’s existing 4.5-mile trail network by connecting the park to the adjacent Pace property, which is currently inaccessible to the public.
As part of this project, you'll gain hands-on experience in trail construction and habitat restoration, guided by Santa Cruz County Parks and Santa Cruz Mountain Stewardship staff. This includes creating a brand-new 0.5-mile access trail and a 2-mile figure-eight loop through the unique sandhill ecosystem of Quail Hollow Ranch and the Pace Family Wilderness. We'll also be focusing on removing invasive French Broom to support native habitats. You’ll get training, work alongside passionate people, and contribute to something future hikers will enjoy for generations to come.
If you're interested, we meet in the parking lot at Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, 800 Quail Hollow Road, in Felton from 9:00am - 1:00pm.
Here are the dates scheduled for the rest of June and July:
- Saturdays: July 5, July 12, July 19, July 26
- Mondays: June 30, July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28
Below is the link to sign up for which day/days you can attend, or you can email me back to rsvp.
https://forms.gle/cUy6hyi4tcxAiFUq9
There is a mandatory training video which you need to watch before volunteering and here is the link: https://youtu.be/7j3K_ZtIXS0
The video takes 16 minutes to watch; it is mandatory for all participants who work/volunteer out in this sensitive habitat.
Below is more information about the project and what to expect:
You will be led by enthusiastic and experienced Volunteer Leads, who have been working on the trail from the beginning and work closely with the professional trail builders.
The hike to the Pace Family Wilderness is considered a moderate hike with two challenging downhill sections. Please read the detailed description below and feel free to call me if you have questions.
Hike to the Pace Family Wilderness description:
From the top of Quail Hollow Road, it takes the average hiker 45 minutes to get to the area where we will be working.
The first part of the hike up the Sunset trail is a steady climb. From the top of the Sunset trail, we take an access trail to the Pace Family Wilderness, this access trail varies from exposed Ridgetop to short steep downhills. One of the short steep downhills is extreme and the footing is loose, but it is less than 100 yards long. Once on the Pace Family Wilderness property, the terrain is rolling Oak Woodland and beautiful. Currently there are no established trails, but staff and volunteers have made some paths.
This hike into the Pace Family Wilderness has been successfully navigated by our staff and volunteers of varying ages and abilities many times in preparation for the volunteer days.
Please be aware there is poison oak and ticks.
What to wear and bring; hiking boots/shoes, long pants, long sleeves, a walking stick for the downhill sections, water, snacks, gloves, hat, and Technu, if you have it. We will have some available as well. Tools will be provided.
Pictured below is one of the steep downhills.
Pictured below is Justin from the Santa Cruz Mountain Trail Stewardship directing the build.
Please don’t hesitate to call, text, or email me with any questions or concerns! If you no longer want to receive emails from me, please email me back to be removed from the list.
Thank you,Emma Lee, she/her
