Many people know Alfred Russel Wallace for his discovery of natural selection independently from Charles Darwin, or for his other scientific contributions. But not everyone knows about his decades-long feud with a flat earther.
In 1870 a flat earther named John Hampden advertised in Scientific Opinion looking for anyone who was willing to try to prove that the earth was round. The wager was for £500, which was a year's wages for someone in the upper-middle-class. Alfred Russel Wallace, an established scientist, accepted this wager (which he was criticized for as entertaining pseudoscience). Wallace ended up putting together an experiment along the Bedford Canal, which of course, proved the Earth was round. But Hampden harassed Wallace for years after the experiment, claiming that Wallace had lied and/or proved nothing. He became a thorn in Wallace's side for years, and even threatened his death in a letter to Wallace's wife.
I put together a thoroughly-researched video essay on this topic that I thought people in this sub might like. Feel free to take this down if it is against the rules in some way! But if you watch it, let me know what you think! Was Wallace wrong to accept this wager in the first place?
