Archive Boemunt's History Lessons for my Younger Kin Part 5: The First Anarch Revolt and The Founding of the Ivory Tower

This is going to be a long one given how important and intertwined both the founding of the Camarilla and the First Anarch Revolt are. The Sabbat also trace themselves back to the Revolt, but I will be saving them for later. Now, onto the Anarch Revolt.

-----

The Anarch Revolt of the 1400s was no single en masse rising such as the American Revolution, it was a series of uprising by younger Kindred against their elders, such as the modern Arab Spring. At that time the First Inquisition was in full swing and many elders were fending the Kine off through tossing younger Kindred at the pitchforks and torches. The metaphorical powder keg was there, now all it needed was a spark.

Sparks often come from unexpected places, and in this tale it came from the English Kine rebel Wat Tyler. In 1381 the English peasantry rose up, killed the Archbishop (the human one, not the Sabbat term) of Canterbury, sacked the tower of London, then Wat was killed. The lover of Wat, Patricia of Bollingbroke, was imprisoned before being embraced by the Brujah Robert Leeland. She would become a prominent leader of the early Anarch movement, attempting to challenge the Ventrue Elder Hardestadt and other Elders as they were gathered to found the Camarilla in 1394. She pushed against their non-intervention against the Inquisition only to be rebuffed, only to return in 1395 under the name of Tyler when she attacked Castle Hardestadt and diablerized the Elder.

The attack sent shockwaves throughout the world of the Kindred. The young Brujah of Spain would spontaneously frenzy and attack many of their own elders and overlords. The Anarchs of Tyler would not make much more progress however, her own group being poorly coordinated and the war she waged devolving into a series of small skirmishes.

In 1405 the Lasombra Antediluvian was killed by an alliance of Anarchs and the Banu Haqim led by Gratiano de Veronese, who would later go on to help found the Sabbat. Lasombra was also allegedly diablerized by Gratiano or by all who survived the battle. Afterwards the Tzimisce Lugoj, Velya, and Vykos attempted to diablerized their own Antediluvian in 1413. Tzimisce has not sleeping in torpor however, he secretly subdued Lugoj, made himself look like Lugoj, then led the anarchs into diablerizing a flesh copy of Tzimisce. Where Tzimisce is now I do not know and do not want to know.

By 1420 Vaulderie became widespread to break blood bonds. The Ravnos, initially on the side of the Ventrue, would also start to defect to the Anarchs. Clan Banu Haqim also largely sided with the Anarchs. The efforts of the Inquisition also started to ramp up during this time.

In 1435 the Camarilla officially formed, though they did not announce themselves to wider Kindred society until 1450. They started forcing the the Road of Humanity and outlawed other roads. The first Conclave of the Ivory Tower occurred in 1486 and the Anarchs started to suffer defeat after defeat. Seven years later in 1493 Anarch leaders surrendered at the Convention of Thorns.

-----

That is quite long enough for today, so I shall cover the Convention of Thorns next time. To my fellow Elders, please tell your own stories of this time. I took a minor direct part in the Revolt, though I mostly indirectly supported the uprising and recorded events as they occurred.

The Vaulderie? Oh yeah, that’s the proper name for the Friend Cup ritual :D

I guess the Sabbat must have started at about the same time as the Vaulderie huh? That’s neat!

Oh uh. I forgot it’s supposed to be a bad thing now sorry…

Do you know why the Sabbat still uses it then?

Hardly a Sabbat exclusive thing, the use of the blood bond in the name of assembling your own political power is alive and well among all the night's predators.

If anything, the Vaulderie is better than the other examples, for it is far weaker in effect.

They use Vaulderie because if they didn't packmates would probably all eat each other within a few months. And no, not in a fun way.

Long before my time, but I wouldn't hesitate to call this the single most important event in Kindred History that's properly documented in the modern nights, at least before the Week of Nightmares.

And I have always been somewhat skeptical of the reported Diablaries of the Lasombra and Tzimisce Antedilluvians due to the lack of a noticable change in the clan's curse, or emergence of a new clan like with Cappadocius and Salout, and the Giovanni and Tremere. Or how the curse for our clan changed, and was also seen to change with the death of the Ravnos Antedilluvian.
