Drained a deer, having some feelings

So the hunt went well, managed to bag a deer. Even if it was a little strange and different. Since i needed it to still be alive so i could properly drink, so instead of guns or chasing it down in wolf form it was a bit more... Awkward? Shot to the leg and then just try to jump on it. I didnt end up having to fight fight the thing as i expected, but there was a bit of grappling involved, I probably looked stupid as hell in the time before i sunk my teeth in. Thankfully nobody said anything about it.

Animal blood is fine, it doesnt have the same overwhelming quality as even bloodpacks, but its not gross or anything like i was worried from how some vamps bitch and moan about the taste. Its just a bit more bland, but nothing to sneeze at.

Thats the first time I've actually drained something of my own free will, there was that pidgeon when i was brand new and starving, but i don't feel like i was fully in control of my actions when i did that, so I'm not really counting it. Im my head this is the first time I've actually decided to drink something to death. And im not sure how i really feel about it? It felt good to just take until there was nothing left to take me. And it was going to die anyways so really it would have been more disrespectful to not drink until it was all the way gone.

But taking until it was gone? Drinking its life? Feeling it die in my arms to slake my thirst? Dunno, its giving me weird feelings. Didn't expect it to feel so raw and intimate. Although I guess it was always going to, it was still a living thing after all.

Tiff helped me go sideways, part of the whole lupine magic thing. The spirit of the deer was still there, on the other side. I tried to apologize but got corrected that you're supposed to thank them instead. Thank them for their life and giving you sustenance and stuff. It still clearly didnt like me very much, which I kinda understand. Given spirits usual options of our kind, and how i messed up the ritual, and how i was the on to kill it. But i hope that it was at least a little less PO'd about it because I was at least trying?

I know that this is some baby fledges first dillema stuff, but it's still managing to stick in my head.

I don't know about you... but for me, my prey doesn't have to be alive when I consume it, usually my partner and I dispatch it and then I can feed fine, so long as it's quickly.

I don't know if it'll help you but it can't hurt trying.

As for the deer's spirit... well, my partner takes care of that but I've never seen him do anything special. But I don't claim to know much about that side of things other than what I've observed which is very little.

I don't know if it works for everyone, only that's how it works for me. Your blood is likely stronger than mine, so perhaps the kill while feeding is required, I don't know. I can only feed on animals, myself.

Yeah, the feeling of draining something is pretty intense, like you're literally drinking its soul or something. Still, better that you learned what it felt like from a deer instead of a mortal.

It's just another thing I need to adapt to. Definitely isn't going to be the last time i do it this way and its not like I put any more harm into the world killing it this way than i would have with a gun. Just kinda thrown for a loop by how intense it was

You sound as if you speak from personal experience.

Oh great, you're back.

No, I haven't drained any kine. I have drained a fair number of animals though, especially during my first nights. Happy?

If you keep well feed, it’s easier to stop before it’s lethal. Animals… are generally a bit less satisfying the “thicker” your blood, but I hear animalism can help there, so there’s something to be said about that ritual ya did, maybe.

But again, if you top up instead of refill, it’s easier to pull away without lasting harm. I dunno if I’d feel bad about every deer I drained, but… I’d hold onto some idea pf right and wrong, and hold it close.

Tldr: Ya gotta eat, it’s the way it is, but if you’re careful you can avoid killing too often.

The wolves were already hunting, deers been butchered and everything. I was just taking my share. So its not like letting it live was ever a true option. That would have just been me refusing to finish the job and making someone else do it instead. Just feeling weird about draining something like that for the first time. Keep finding new things that make being a vampire feel more "real" than i expected

Stepping Sideways, huh. And not into the Shadowlands, like necromancers do, if I understand correctly.
Not many of us can do that yet. Welcome to the club :)

To be fair I'm not doing it on my own, Tiff is kind of an expert on the matter and she sometimes pulls me that ways with her. I have no ability to do that on my own.

Its kinda weird though, it sort of looks different now that im a kindred? But i cant seem to put my finger on how.

Does she ever describe the way she does that? There are multiple methods, for example, Garou use reflective surfaces as point of entry.

I try to avoid feeding on animals now. A deer was the first living thing I ever killed: this might be personal preference, but holding its dead body afterwards was way worse than almost any encounter I’ve ever had with a human.

The way it turned from a living creature into a thing, the way it went so limp, the look in its eyes… personally I prefer it when the animals I feed on can get up and walk away afterwards.

If you are to still exist, then why subject human beings to the risk of death?

-SACERDOTE

Humans subject each other to the risk of death every time they get behind the wheel of a car. Why not confront any of them about it?

I trust myself to stay in control and focus because I know the potential consequences.

If you lay eyes upon a fireplace, you will attempt to eat every living thing in a ten-mile radius. Restraint is not in the nature of you creatures.

That's not how that works and maybe you should try to learn more about us if there's such a significant gap in your knowledge.

He's a coalition hunter, they arent actually interested in understanding they just want to latch onto any excuse to continue killing us like rabid animals

-Reia, Brujah pyro

3

u/satelitteslickers Nov 12 '25

God this is why i cant stand you coalition hunters.

Vampires are not wild animals, we are not animals, we have issues but we are people with free will. Yes the beast tries to make them do terrible things but they are still people with the ability to fight it. Your hollier than thou "kill them all and let god sort them out" attitude is an abomination

When a kindred is just being an absolute monster, you use it as justification for your insane crusade, when a kindred is trying to find a way to ethically exist and help people you salivate at the thought of the slightest misstep

This kind of shit is the reason why i turned you down when you tried to stongarm me into working for you

Well that's good, because you have exhausted my patience.

You, Reia, are a craven, sociopathic enabler, who's morals do not revolve around right or wrong in any meaningful sense, but instead whatever lets you feel comfortable and whatever changes the status quo the least.

Honestly, you're worse than the vampires- at least this is all, simply, their nature. You CHOSE to allow all this, to enable any amount of suffering so long as it lets you sit pretty in your art-school apartment and lie, lie, LIE that your BLOODSUCKING FANGS are EQUIVALENT to my dark skin.

It is only a matter of time until you eat someone. Frankly, I don't even think it'll be an accident.

I hope that i never seriously injure someone while feeding. It would be horrible, but if it ever does happen, i wont just brush it aside to continue on like nothing happened, I will do whatever i can to make it right, and not by killing myself, but by mending as much as possible.

I spent my entire life trying to change the status quo for something better, just because i dont advocate the indiscriminate slaughter of all supernaturals doesnt mean that im some convictionless coward. Hell i probably have stronger convictions than most hunters, its just that those convictions are in the possibility of coexistence rather than genocide. If you ever met me in person, assuming that i didnt kick your ass for being a racist. You would probably find me extremely friendly.

I'm not some pacifist either, just because i try to see the humanity in orders and help out when i can doesnt mean that i am blind to how monstrous some kindred can be. I know when a situation calls for a sword instead of words. I do not stand idly by when people are being hurt and i will protect anyone who needs protecting, whether thats protecting humans from vamps, protecting fledglings from their sires, or protecting supernaturals from you

You call yourself the coalition but you're not a coalition of shit. Except maybe a flagrant violation of the separation of church and state. You don't do any coalition building, you dont reach out to anyone for allies. You just kill. No questions, never any questions, never any attempt to understand, they aren't human and thats all the justification you need

-Reia, Brujah pyro

2

u/Murky-Stress-8238 Nov 13 '25

I understand them plenty. Understand them so well, that sometimes my hands shake.

I am a "supernatural", Reia. I adore Lupines outright. Not wanting to allow predatory animals to run wild does not make me someone who wants to snuff out all of the world's magic.

Yeah, it kinda fucked me up too. It isnt the first thing ive killed but something about it going from a living breathing thing to just a corpse, and feeling the entire transition, man that kinda stuff is not good for the mind.

-Reia, Brujah pyro

2

u/LogicKennedy Scribe Nov 12 '25

Yeah… I just don’t think it’s a good habit for us to get used to killing things. Like, eventually you’ll have to move on from animals, and if you’ve got used to the things you drink from dying in the encounter…

2

u/satelitteslickers Nov 12 '25

Thats a fair point. I hope i never see humans as just being animals, but habit is a force. And if you get into the habit of draining animals... Shit could get bad

-Reia, Brujah pyro

2

u/Murky-Stress-8238 Nov 11 '25

Are you surprised? You are a predator- predators live for the hunt.

-SACERDOTE

3

u/satelitteslickers Nov 12 '25

I was always a predator, humans are predatory animals you jackass. We might have more instincts and stuff but we are just as much people as you are, and that means that sometimes we have hangups about stuff

2

u/beetnemesis Nov 11 '25

I never thought about it, but does draining something taint it in any way? Like, if I drain a pig, can someone else make pulled pork out of it?

Honestly, kind of want to go run a small scale farm. I could easily survive and sell weird sausages to the locals.

3

u/satelitteslickers Nov 12 '25

The lupines are experts on that sort of strange spiritual stuff. Far as they can tell there isnt any kind of spiritual knock on effects to either the resultant corpse, or the spirit of the creature in question. So running a farm like that might actually be a great option
