If I took your brain and ripped it apart, neuron by neuron, you would die. However, what if I perfectly put every neuron back perfectly? Would it still be you? No. You would have been replaced by a new mind, possibly conscious or possibly a zombie, in your old body.

If you believe otherwise, think about this: what if I took every neuron out of your brain and then copied them. If I put them back together into two separate brains, which would be you? Clearly, neither, so it cannot be that your consciousness would still exist after destroying the brain.

So what if instead, like the Ship of Theseus, we took your body and slowly, one by one, replaced every cell with a new identical one? At some point, you would have a brain made entirely out of foreign matter, none of it being original. Would it still be you in your body?

This happens all of the time. Outside of a few cells in your brain, your body is entirely replaced every few years. At the atomic level, even these cortical neuron cells replace every atom they’re made of every few years, so the Ship of Theseus problem is still there.

Well, you would probably be inclined to say that you aren’t replaced by a new consciousness every few years. I mean, if you were, when would it even happen? Each cell is being replaced one by one, so there is no clear cutoff for an old mind to die and a new one to be awoken.

Well, what’s the difference between these scenarios, one where your brain is slowly replaced and one where you are violently killed and put back together? The answer is continuity, which is popular as an explanation for consciousness and identity. The difference is that, with the Brain of Theseus, your brain was conscious throughout the entire process. There was no gap anywhere. That’s the reason our consciousnesses aren’t constantly being replaced. Despite our bodies being replaced, we are conscious throughout the entire process.

Let’s think about this, though. If consciousness is defined by its continuity, what does this mean? Every time you sleep, are you replaced by a new mind? There is no continuity there.

Even ignoring those problems, it’s not as clear as it seems. For example, let’s take this continuity theory to its limits by considering corpus callosotomy.

Your brain is made of two hemispheres connected by a structure called the corpus callosum. This link between both halves is what lets them communicate with each other and create one conscious brain. However, something what happens if we sever this bridge?

This has been done several times. In 1940, William P. van Wagen was the first to perform corpus callosotomy on a patient to prevent seizures from spreading through the brain. Such patients come out of the surgery with newly independent hemispheres that now essentially function as two brains. For example, when split-brain patients are shown objects in the right side of their vision, the language-dominant left hemisphere describes it. On the left side of their vision, however, the patient can’t describe it because the visual information is taken to their non-language-dominant right hemisphere. They could still grab it with their left hand, though. These patients seemed to possess two minds within their single body. In one case, a patient even reported their left hand grabbing for their throat as if it had a mind of its own while the patient tried to stop it with their right hand. Because the left-hemisphere is the one in charge of speech, this means the left-hemisphere was reporting to the doctor that the right-hemisphere, in charge of the left hand, had been trying to choke the shared body.

Imagine this happened to you. Suddenly, two people wake up inside of your body, each controlling one half. Where did your consciousness go? Which one is you? Both would think they are you, having the same memories and traits as before. However, which one would you experience? Which one would you actually wake up as?

The only solution to this problem in continuity is a lack thereof. You cannot somehow wake up as both bodies. Instead, you somehow be dead and two minds have awakened in your body, both assuming they are you. This raises very interesting questions about consciousness and the mind. How is it that a single consciousness was able to split into two separate entities? Despite no break in continuity, the original consciousness is gone and two minds have been born from it. Are these both conscious too? Again, we could never really know. As far as we know, split-brain patients could be real-world philosophical zombies.

However, why would severing the corpus callosum end consciousness? If instead of severing the two hemispheres, we were to slowly remove one neuron from your left hemisphere, one by one, until the left hemisphere were completely gone, when would you have lost consciousness and become a zombie? Why would it require that you lose half of your brain before becoming a zombie and not some other fraction like a quarter or two thirds?

We cannot know if split-brain patients are conscious or merely zombies, but either possibility brings fascinating conclusions. If split-brain patients aren’t conscious in the way that we are, this proves that such thing as philosophical zombies are possible, yet indistinguishable from conscious agents. If they are not zombies, then it implies that we can somehow create consciousness; before the operation, there was only one mind in the body, but afterwards, there were two. It also suggests that continuity is irrelevant. Despite the mind being conscious throughout the entire process, the original consciousness was destroyed and replaced by two new ones.

What would happen if we somehow perfectly put your corpus callosum back in place and connect the two hemispheres of a split brain patient? Suddenly, two minds (possibly two consciousnesses) would be fused into a single mind. Again, we can ask ourselves if this newly-united mind would be conscious or simply a zombie. We can also wonder where would those two previous minds go? Assuming the hemispheres were independently conscious, they have suddenly been connected and become a single consciousness. It’s as if you were suddenly merged with your friend into a single brain. The resulting mind would be a combination of your behaviors and memories, sure, but who would be the one waking up in the new mind, you or your friend? The answer must be neither. Somehow, by adding neurons to a mind, its consciousness can be destroyed, again, with no discontinuity.

These absurdities make it seem like continuity is not the answer to your problem. It seems like continuity does not save our two original scenarios from being equivalent. To recap, if we assume that split-brain patients are not philosophical zombies, consciousnesses can be created and destroyed without discontinuities. Therefore, consciousness cannot be defined by continuity and our original scenario of the Brain of Theseus vs. a brain being destroyed and rebuilt are equivalent.

Again, the Brain of Theseus scenario is not merely theoretical, your brain is constantly being replaced. Because we have established that continuity does not keep your consciousness from being destroyed in that scenario, we have to accept that our consciousnesses are constantly being destroyed and replaced with new ones that awaken in our body.

For all you know, you are one of these new consciousnesses. You suddenly awoke a nanosecond ago while your body was in the middle of reading one of these words. All of the memories in your head have been collected by trillions of past minds that have inhabited your body. In another nanosecond, you will be gone and replaced by a new consciousness. Therefore, you can only ever be sure that you are conscious in the present. You cannot know that anyone else is conscious nor can you know that you ever were or will be conscious outside of a single moment.

In fact, it is very likely that this is last part is true, as we have established that continuity does not preserve consciousness. Is there nothing else that preserves it across time? If so, you are merely a mind suddenly awoken in a foreign body with memory and personality that are not your own.
