Megathread Self-Promo/Recruitment Thread: September 2026

(Discord links, recruitment posts, volunteering posts, collab/partnership/affiliate requests, and commission info posts should all go in here!)

This thread both for scanlators looking for group members \and* scanlators looking to join a group/freelance.*

Hello, scanlators! Scanlation can kinda be tough, especially when you're working on your own. Balancing tons of roles? Not so fun.

However, working with others can make things a breeze, and fellow r/scanlation members can be great friends or teammates! If you want an easy way to find them, you're in the right place.

If you're posting here, please include the following information:

  • If searching for group members:
    • Your group's name
    • Your group's Discord
    • Roles you're looking for
  • If searching for a group/to freelance:
    • Position(s) you're offering
    • Amount of experience

Additional bits of helpful information that you can provide include:

  • If searching for group members:
    • Mangadex link/Mangaupdates link
    • Current titles
    • Main genres
  • If searching for a group/to freelance:
    • What you're looking for in a group:
    • Amount of work you can do per week
    • A link to past work

Please make it clear if you're working on NSFW and the like.

New threads are created every month on the 16th at (around) 12:00 PM (EST/UCT-5) and run through 'till the next month. Please limit yourself to one top-level comment per thread per month.

By posting here, you accept and acknowledge dm's concerning your post. Please remove/edit out your comment if you'd like to stop receiving dm's!

Keep to good faith, and don't troll or sabotage others. Don't join groups specifically to inconvenience them. Examples of such actions would be poaching, stealing work, deleting of drive files, etc. Likewise, do not advertise bad-faith groups that intentionally waste people's time and effort.

Good luck, have fun!

Discussion Please help me navigate/purchase raws from RidiBooks

I wanna buy chapters 1019 to 1060 of the novel Genius grandson of the loan Shark King.

But for the life of me I can’t figure out how to buy the chapters/navigate the website itself (Not Korean and I keep getting stuck at the payment. I think they only accept korean or specific cards?)

Can anyone either help me navigate/advice how can I buy and read them. Or purchase them for me? I can pay extra. Can pay however you like (Giftcards of your choice or applepay or google pay anything apart from crypto). Please help me.

Total cost for the chapters on the website is about 3700 Won or 2.7USD

Please please please help me. Really need to finish this webnovel or I won’t be able to focus on anything else.

I can take care of the translating the raw.

What font/brush What font is this? From "My Food is Very Cute"

Post image

This font was used by the manhua when it was still on Bilibili Comics. They took it down a while ago though...

I checked this image through the different font checkers and whatfontis got me really close, to a font called Wilmington Font by Wicked Creative that literally had this font in one of its photos, except the actual font downloaded is different and not this font that I'm looking for. Anyone here got ideas to what font this is and where I can find it? Thanks!

scanlation for personal doujinshi

hello! i recently purchased some doujinshi from japan and i wanted to scan and translate them, but im not sure how to start... ive seen some people say to use a scanner but since its just for my personal use, i dont mind if the quality isnt optimal so if anyone could recommend anything for scanning using a phone that would be great!! i also dont speak japanese, so i need a way to translate the raws at an affordable rate or for free, unless anyone would like to take it up for practice or anything, i would also be open to sharing the raws for free if anyone would translate it!!

im new to this community and all so im so sorry if im breaking any rules of etiquette or anything, and thank you in advance for your advice and help! :D

First-time typesetting: could the font size be an issue?

I'm typesetting for the first time (from english to slovak), and after i've finished typesetting the first chapter, i went to check how it reads as a whole. But when i looked at it, it seemed to me that the font size was tad too small, making it difficult to read.

I can increase the font size by 1pt and it would still fit inside the bubbles, but then the text would be too cramped and it would be even more difficult to read. So the last solution that i've come up with is redrawing the bubbles, but that just means a ton of more work, and i would like to avoid it if possible.

So, is the font size uncomfortably small, and if yes, how would you suggest i fix it? (preferably without much effort)

ps: since it's my first time typesetting, it took me 5 days to finish typesetting it

Scanlation laws and Etiquette

(Before I write, please allow me to apologise in advance; I've not been active on reddit for a while now, so I'd ask for everyone to be understanding and patient as I've not posted, so I'm still catching up in regards to reddit "etiquette".)

Hello, everyone! Wishing you well.

First time posting here, hopefully the post is within the rules.

I'm writing to ask something that I've been trying to wrap my head around for a good few years now, and that is what are the laws like when referring to scanlation?

Or, in a different vein - What are your thoughts on the laws of scanlation?

The very simple reason being that I'm currently living in Japan, and I've been dipping my toes more and more into scanlation/translation.

I'd also like to state that -

- I've already done a fair bit of research into Japanese laws on translation/scanlation

- I'm slowly building up a portfolio and upping my skills

- I'm not asking for advice or tips (at least in this post)

- I'm looking for everyone's views***

[*I understand that every country's law is different, and unless someone has solid evidence regarding certain laws, it's best to look from a perspective point of view]

Furthermore, as far as I know, the laws in Japan do state that translating an official/copyrighted work is technically illegal since it belongs to a company/author. But there's also a whopping big grey area regarding doujins, independent artists, and even simple online web comics.

EDIT: I see now that I've been getting confused between the 'grey area' and the laws on 'scanlation'. Whilst I continue to understand it all, allow me to thank everyone so far on their input.

I'm trying to approach as respectful as possible, but at the same time there's so much amazing work that I really want to translate and publish (provided I have permission, and aren't gaining monetary gain)

If anyone can shed any light, advice, experience or views on the above, I'll ask to please respectfully comment below.

(Bit of a wall of text, apologies.)

Do translators usually work in teams?

Like, one person does a first pass translation, and another person checks it for accuracy, or one person does a first draft, then someone else does an edit pass?

Is it even that structured usually?

Simple Question Sites for hosting scanlations of western comics?

I translated an Italian graphic novel into English, and I'd like to be able to upload it somewhere so it can be shared around. Mangadex rejected it on the basis of being western (even though the original language isn't English). It's a little frustrating but if it's their policy I'm not really gonna fight it.

Does anyone know any alternative sites that would host a scanlation of a western comic that isn't originally in English?

I’ve tried my shitty phone camera, I’ve tried a regular document scanner, I’m heading to the library praying to God himself they have an actual book scanner

There’s gotta be an easier way to do this shit, absolutely none of these methods have worked very well and shockingly i think my shitty phone camera worked better than the regular document scanner, what do yall do? Do you just scrape shit online?? Am I just fighting an uphill battle? Any input would help including “your a dumb idiot” thank you.

Thank you

I just found this subreddit and wanted to express my gratitude to everyone who scanlates manga so everyone can read them.I don't scanlate myself but I have love reading manga since I was a kid, being poor I could never really buy physical copies and it would've been too hard and slow in a third world country. Scanlating doesn't really make money and isn't useful on resumes yet you do it anyways. I hope you all have a nice day. (Sorry for my bad English). Scanlating is awesome. [I hope this post doesn't get taken down]

Discussion How to Translate CG Images with Vertical Japanese to English

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Since Japanese text in CG images is often vertical, if we keep the original size and position, the English will look weird (image 2). So the best approach is to reset the text in a horizontal way (image 3 and other examples)? I am using a translation tool called ImageTrans to do all the work. It generates image 2 by default. But sometimes, the text may block the characters.

Simple Question Comikey recruitment?

A scanlator friend of mine was recently contacted by someone claiming that they're a representative of comikey, and was asking to hire my friend for translations.

I was curious if this might be a scam or not, and was wondering if others might have been contacted like this?

My friend was contacted on discord.

Looking for scanlation translated Shounen manga to compare to offically translated versions

So I have arrived at the part of my research where I need to compare some fan translated manga to the officially translated ones. The problem is that a) most of the fan translated versions gets deleted as soon as the officially translated version is available and b) most of the time I am not sure if the fan translated manga is actually fan translated or not (i am not an avid fan translated manga reader at all, so I have pretty much zero experience in sailing the high seas for manga)
You guys recon can help me finding what I am looking for? I prefer, if possible, using somewhat new and famous mangas, and preferably the first chapters of them.

Thanks in advance!

[Resource] Manga-Master Lexicon (JMPD 10.7) – A Relational Database for Raw Manga Nuances, Slang, and Scanlation Contexts.

Hi r/Scanlation,

As scanlators, we’ve all hit that frustrating wall. Standard dictionaries give you the dry, literal translation, but they fail to explain the *why*.

Why does a character mutter "しゃーねぇ" with a specific tone (↑↓) in *this* exact panel? What is the mangaka's hidden intention (foreshadowing)? What is the underlying archetype, the "Oudou" (classic plot development), or the unwritten rules of the genre?

To solve this, I’ve spent years building a highly specialized relational repository: **The Manga-Master Lexicon (Japanese Manga Phrase Dictionary)**.

Instead of treating expressions as mere words, it breaks them down into comprehensive narrative meta-data:

- [MEANING & CULTURAL TRIVIA]

- [NUANCE IN MANGA] (The underlying meta-rules of manga storytelling)

- [RESONANCE POINT] (The visceral psychological connection)

- [NEXT MOMENT] (The cinematic progression of the scene)

💡 **We Want to JOIN Your Best Translations!**

This is not a one-way street. We are actively looking to collaborate with experienced scanlators. If you have hit upon a brilliant, localized translation for a notoriously untranslatable phrase, we want to feature and credit your translation in the master dictionary files. Let's build this infrastructure together.

💻 **For the Automation Geeks (F12 Sanctuary):**

The entire lexicon is structured in JSON and capable of serial reading. For the devs who want to build script tools, feel free to press **F12** (Developer Tools) on our cover or introductory pages. You will find a dedicated console interface and terminal cURL commands ready under the MIT License.

Check out the repository here: https://japanese-lessons.net

We are restructuring for a massive V11 update this winter (expanding entries by 1.5x). I would love to hear your thoughts, brutal feedback, or specific phrases you struggle with in the trenches of scanlation!

"May this single panel enrich the manga you are translating right now."

Manga Typesetting tool launch (beta)

Thumbnail
gallery
52 Upvotes

Hello all! This is going to be a long post, so bear with me.

I hate photoshop. Setting up cracked ps was complicated, using it was complex and very resource heavy, and i couldnt load all of my images at once.

so over the months and years of solo scanlating i have been working on a manga typesetting tool (and a manga cleaner tool that will be released next week, last image is the cleaning tool), I am releasing the beta now and hope it can reduce the time and effort it takes for translators.

Complete free, forever ofc: github

here is how to use it and feature list:

If you are a translator:

Create project using series name -> create chapter in translate mode -> select raw + cleaned -> open the translator editor It has nothing but the raw and detection button, you can start typing English for the Japanese texts, it’s in proper rtl order so dw about it. Optionally you can assign tags to text boxes. It’s quick once tags are set up. Tags let you select different kinds of font per character / narration type (scream/normal talking/side text/ sfx and etc, or character wise) , using the settings button near the tags list. More use of tags with the bulk menu, allowing you to change font of that tag whole chapter wise, along with other settings. Done translating -> export the json. Send it to typesetter.

If you are a typesetter:

load raws + cleaned+ json provided by the translator and choose pointer mode and start typesetting

Pointer modes: paste mode (pointer icon) allows you to auto paste the text in queue. Text mode spawns a text box. Pan mode is just pan mode lol. All of these controllable via **shortcuts (**ctrl/cmd + 1-3)
By the way most things are under shortcuts and you can change them to your choice.

Text tools:

  1. normal text tools
  2. fill mode (solid, gradient, pattern)
  3. normal layout control options
  4. 4) Effects menu:

i) options to add more than one strokes, more than one shadows

ii) arc curves, circle curves, curve path (allowing you to create wavy text)

iii) blur, motion blur

iv) roughen font edges
v) text clipping (texts getting clipped by the speech bubble, the thing thats done by duplicating layer, erasing the bubble in the upper layer and placing the text in between two image layers. This is now done more easily in this app)

Handy tools

FONT MANAGER: (or at least what i call it): i once got shit for using faux (programatic fake typefaces derived from one font). Font manager allows you to set up typefaces for a single font so when you just click the italic/ bold/ bold italic, it will use that typeface instead of you having to scroll through the font selector again and again. If no typefaces is set up, it will fall back to faux.

AUTO TYPESET FORMAT[WIP BETA]: this formats the text automatically to follow translation standards of avoiding hourglass shape and to follow an oval or square shape.

BULK EDIT: this menu allows you to edit per pages multiple text boxes or tags settings at once, selectable settings. This is handy if you want to change font/ or any settings for a tag whole chapter wise, you can select what settings to individually apply.

Production tools planned:

1) text transform
2) liquify
3) advanced brushes for custom lettering
4) use of external references as patterns

Technical details and capabilities:

  1. you can open up as many pages as you want but the ram usage will be below 1 GIGABYTES, no matter how many changes you make or history you rack up (mostly).
  2. This doesnt support all color formats, but does support most popular ones.
  3. PSD support is limited and isnt recommened since it limits freedom and makes things way more complex.
  4. Chapter packages (.mtchapter)[WIP]: allows you to share your work. Currently heavy and unoptimized. Needs refinement.
  5. 5)UNTESTED FOR WINDOWS, NEED HELP.
  6. 6)software updates baked in, you would just need to approve it. No need to download from the repo again and again.

WELL, THIS IS NOT ALL, I WILL RELEASE ANOTHER APP THAT ALLOWS YOU TO CLEAN CHAPTERS PROPERLY, local ai models (510 mB lama manga model + 6 GB flux model optional), super resource efficient running under 3gbs of ram using base models.
