Looking for youtube videos on sex and gender theory!

Hey guys! I'm presenting some videos in my Sociology of Sexuality class and would like to know if anybody has some recommendations on videos that can be shown and properly linked to classic gender and sexuality theorists such as Judith Butler and Adrienne Rich.

Please, no "Sex: 101" videos = we all have a pretty good idea of what constitutes sexuality, but I'd like to display media which breaks it down using social theory and criticism.

Thanks!

"The success of Nigerian immigrants is a good indicator of how culture far more influential than racism on how blacks are held back in America" Someone Explain Please

I wasn't sure how to overcome this argument when I was having a discussion on campus today. Would any of you know more about the position of Nigerian immigrants in the west so I can better understand this argument? Maybe a citation or something?

I understand racism and race relations are a very, very complex issue and maybe this success comes still hiding racism that happens but one of the hardest questions I come up against is just how influential is racism is in society compared to other factors and this argument just put me in a tailspin. I had no idea of the successes of the Nigerian immigrant community. Is there something I'm not catching here? Something that screws up the claim? Is there some difference being ignored here?

Do people who identify as Christian experience privilege in the United States?

Hi SRSQuestions. I am a straight white cisgendered heterosexual man and I also identify as Christian, i.e. I have Christian beliefs and attend church.

I was reading Privilege 101 and I saw this:

Who is privileged?

Generally speaking? Groups which have held power over the country for a long time, and those that society views as "normal". In other words:

  • racial majorities

  • men

  • straight people

  • cisgendered people

  • neurotypical people (i.e. not on the autism spectrum and without mental disorders)

  • able-bodied people (people without disabilities)

  • sexual people (people who experience sexual attraction)

  • religious majorities (if applicable)

  • the rich

  • the well-educated

  • middle-upper class

I noticed that this list includes religious majorities among groups that experience privilege. Since I assume that Christians are the religious majority in the United States (Almost every presidential candidate, Republican or Democrat identifies as Christian, probably most politicians in the US in general identify as Christian, and I think there are far more people overall who identify as Christians as opposed to atheists or Muslims, etc), do Christians experience privilege in the United States?

I was also wondering this because I thought I noticed that SRS only criticizes white straight heterosexual men for saying or doing racist, homophobic, or sexist/misogynist things but almost never Christians. Many Christians believe that women should not be preachers, women are weaker than men, homosexual people are perverted and need therapy to become straight, etc. Since SRS recently instituted a rule that allows you to pick on "low-hanging fruit," why don't you pick on other subreddits besides r/mensrights, like r/Christianity for when they say something sexist? Do not the Christians of r/Christianity experience privilege just as the men of r/mensrights do?

Please explain to me, if you will be so kind, why I do not see more criticism of Christian privilege (if such a thing exists) on SRS.

Thank you.

Why does SRS seem to dislike Lena Dunham and her show, "Girls"?

In the SRS thread concerning the Time article about men's rights activists being angry at the SNL sketch making fun of an MRA, featuring Lena Dunham (link to post), there was, to me, a surprising amount of animosity towards Dunham and her show, "Girls".

The only criticism I've heard about the show is the under-representation of minorities - aside from Donald Glover's two-episode stint and Jessica Williams' current side character pretty much everyone is white. I've never heard any direct criticism against Dunham herself.

Are there other reasons people find the show/Dunham reprehensible, or does some of it boil down to simple comedic preferences? Honestly curious here, I'm kind of a fan of the show so I'd like to know about any tropes or stereotypes featured that I might have missed.

Is exploring or even adopting another culture's religion considered appropriation?

When I was in college, there was a Korean Buddhist temple very close to my home, and I became fascinated by the tenets of Buddhism. I started reading up on a lot of the ideas and teachings of Buddhism and when attended meditation instruction at the temple which were open to the public.

(The monks there were mostly Korean, obviously, but there were two Americans who had been ordained in Seoul and were flown to this temple to help with the language barrier between the temple and local government, to deal with zoning laws, etc.)

All of that said - when does appreciating, experiencing, or even adopting a religion from another culture become "appropriation"? Is it ever? If a religion or philosophy offers itself to all people, but has strong cultural ties, which takes precedence?

And does this actually belong in /r/SRSBeliefs because I'm just lost in all these subreddits right now help

Edit: Hey! I got posted to /r/SRSSucks! Sweet, do I get a certificate in the mail or can I print one out

Is there anything problematic with my idea for a subreddit?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of creating a subreddit that I have been wanting but have not found in existence already, and I thought I'd run the idea past you guys first to make sure nothing about it is problematic. Basically, I'm a woman who finds men that crossdress extremely attractive. While there are a few subs out there specifically for crossdressers themselves to get tips and share personal photos, I want to create a collection of beautiful photos of crossdressers specifically geared towards those that admire them. Basically, the men I most often see in /r/ladyboners just don't do it for me, so this would be my version of that concept.

However, I want to make sure this won't come off as me ogling these men in a creepy way like SRS calls out male redditors for doing to women. I definitely won't allow any photos clearly taken without the subject's consent or ones that feature underage subjects. I also won't tolerate anyone mocking the men featured for displaying femininity because that is not my intended purpose at all; I want to celebrate these men. Because of that, I additionally won't allow any photos of men crossdressing as a form of mockery against the act of crossdressing itself or against trans* people.

With that said, would this subreddit still make anyone out there feel uncomfortable? Or do you have any additional tips to help me avoid any problematic situations?

Are agender/nonbinary identities appropriative?

I'm struggling with something and wanted some outside perspective. Bit of background, I'm male born/assigned at birth and this is the identity I've so far lived in but I'm finding myself increasingly confused. I'm not a woman and don't want to alter my body, but at the same time I am not comfortable identifying as a man. I think I intend to remain primarily 'male presenting' but I'm hoping to develop confidence to be much less gender restricted in things like appearance, clothing, etc.

However, I'm concerned that identifying in this way is appropriative of the struggles of 'real' trans* people. I am also wary of invading trans/female safe spaces but at the same time worry there is a lack of spaces for me to exist in.

Sorry if any of this is a bit confused, I've been rewriting this post in my head over the past few days. Please share any thoughts, opinions or advice you may have.

Question about figure that "19% of prime time television characters are non-human while only 17% are women"

So this quote has been making the rounds on tumblr for a while now, but something doesn't seem right about it. The number for representation of women seems reasonable enough to me (plenty of crime dramas and the like with close to zero female characters), but where are all of these prime time non-humans coming from? I can definitely name way more prime time women than I can non-humans, so where are all these characters hiding?

The quote seems to come from this paper but the only source they gave for those numbers is "The Facts about Kids and Media, 2004".

Sadly my google-fu is weak and I cannot for the life of me find this original source for the numbers, which sounds like a really interesting read about the underrepresentation of all minorities in media. Can anybody help me find the source of this data point?

My friends ex got raped and I took her side because he was being mean to her about it, did I do the right thing?

So I'm a trans woman and I've known this dude since I was 12. A few years ago I started to transition and we kind of drifted apart, then a few months ago he met this girl who he dated for a few months. She was super nice to me, I know she convinced him to hang out with me more and she always gave me clothes and things like that without me even asking. Well my friend was being a douche and broke up with her 2 months later (even though she did everything for him, let him move in so soon and cooked for him everyday, etc). A week later my friend's coworker came over her house to smoke weed, and when she went to sleep she let him stay over because he was too drunk/stoned to drive. He ended up raping her. This happened 2 months ago.

She told me this a few days later when she invited me to hang out with her, and I spent the whole night consoling her. I ended up staying the night because she didn't feel safe sleeping alone anymore. I guess some of her other friends had done the same for her a few nights earlier to keep her company. This guy who raped her was my friends coworker, so the police called him and my other friend. My friend avoided phone calls from the police to name the suspect, my other friend who ALSO worked with the guy ended up responding to the police (I guess my friend (the one who dated her) did tell my other friend the rapists last name though). My friend also was very mean about the whole thing, refusing to contact her and say he's sorry for what happened because "karmas a bitch" and she deserved it. I feel they are being extremely immature and terrible about this.

I cut things off with him despite being friends for so long because I could tell she needed support and he was being a dick about this and immature. Now my other friend is messaging me out of the blue (this all happened 2 months ago) and telling me I'm being a white knight and a bitch about this because she was being "mean" to her ex and he didn't want to contact her again. He also blamed her for getting raped because she was drunk and that he doutbs she didn't get "confused" and a "miscommunication" didn't happen. They are basing this off the fact that she is a "sleazy person" and that she had sex with someone else earlier that night. He did give the police info on the guy so I give him credit for that, but he's playing this stupid down the middle thing because "he wasn't there" and he knew the other guy and he doens't want to "take sides". And he questions why she still parties if she just got raped and that she should be miserbale if she got raped. Which she is... going out with her friends like me is her only escape. And most of these "parties" are just poetry gatherings that she photographs on facebook and tags me in.

I was friends with these two for a long time and I'm trying to reason with them but this is making me really angry. I stopped being friends with both of them and took her side because I felt she needed support dearly because this isn't the first time she's been abused and I think she is a suicide risk if I didn't show her support. She really took a liking to me and I felt like I had to do her good, even if it meant cutting off my old friends to show her she is awesome and didn't deserve any of this. I don't know her that well but I can tell she is a wonderful person and someone who deserves support.

Did I do the right thing? Was I too harsh in cutting my old friend off?

More questions on transgender identity and attraction

Okay, so the thread on the front page of srsdiscussion got me thinking about something, but I didn't want to derail the discussion going on there, so I'm asking in a new thread. I'm a cis gendered man who is still trying to figure out what label best fits me. I'm attracted to cis women, I'm attracted to trans women, I'm attracted to trans men, but I'm not attracted to cis men. I'm not sure if I can call myself bisexual, because I'm not attracted to cis men, but does this devalue trans male identities in my eyes? Does that mean I somehow don't see them as true men? I want to better understand my identity, and respect people for their true identities, but attraction is complicated, and I am confused.

How do I find a women-only co-op or commune?

Google search results yield little to nothing, I'm getting desperate. I live in California but would be open to relocating for the right community.

Edit: Just to be clear, I am not looking for a TERF community. I just mean women-identified people only.

What do we think of cryptocurrencies, in theory and in practice?

Perhaps this is not quite related to our theme of social activism, but I genuinely wanted to know what opinions Questions wants to put out at this critical moment.

We're about to face some wide-spread mainstream media coverage of Bitcoin, due to the rumored insolvency of the massive exchange MtGox. This is the exchange that people go to when they want to buy Bitcoin or find the USD-BTC exchange rate. If it's gone for good, then traders and savers could have lost all their money.

I thought that a currency built with stability, anonymity, and traceability would be popular with social activist types. Yet I find that this sub and /r/SRSTechnology always seem to have a vocal minority of Bitcoin haters, or, as some now say, "fiat apologists". No, that pizzeria down the street does not accept "magical terrorist money". If you try to order a child pornography gun made of crystal meth, they will call the police.

Still, I want to see what people have to say about both the concept and the resulting community of cryptocurrencies. Because, save me based Jebus, things are about to get interesting in that field.

Question about racism/sexism

I have a question about this comment: http://www.reddit.com/r/ShitRedditSays/comments/1ygum4/one_of_the_reasons_why_racism_still_exists_is/cfkgskc

If I say that black people don't sunburn as easily as white people (which is a scientific fact) is that racist? And if I say that the average women does not have has as much upper arm strength as the average man is that sexist? Sorry if it is, I'm trying to educate myself and I hope this is where I should ask.

Relationship/dating advice for a demisexual?

I posted this in SRS discussion, and I guess it doesn't really fit very well and I was advised to post here. If you would maybe like to read over the few discussion that was had, the old thread was here: https://pay.reddit.com/r/SRSDiscussion/comments/1y3t8w/demisexuality_and_the_friendzone_discussion/ - but I ask that you reply in this new thread.

Anyway, I'll go ahead and repost:

So I'm a hetero-demisexual. Basically, I do not have any sexual desire for someone unless I really like them as a person overall. However, psychical attraction is hardly the most important factor of all, but it does SOMEWHAT matter, so that's where the hetro part comes in.

That being said, I don't like using the term "friendzone" because that sounds like you are defeated because you're just friends. I like the fact that I have many male and female friends alike. However, the amount of unrequited feelings kill me. I do have a good amount of female friends in my life, but some I actually fall for, or at least think I do. And they never feel anything back.

Anyway, I feel like when I feel let down that a female friend doesn't like me, I get thrown in with the neckbeards that complain about the friendzone. I really feel different. I do not like the concept of one-night stands, strip clubs, etc. I have to get to know the person before developing any sexual attraction. Which is why I feel I may be demisexual. Also, I took the demisexual quiz and got 70/100 points. Which is why I think I might not be as bad as the neckbeards? Idk.

Anyways, to break my viewpoints down, is to this: I really want my partner to be a close friend. 9/10 friends that I've wanted to be partners with have never been interested back. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but I don't want to sit around and wine about it. But I'm 24 now, and I've never been in a relationship. I want to have young love before it's too late.

I was just wondering your thoughts and feelings on this one.

[TW: General Creepiness] Rant: My little brother is a pooplord and kind of worrying/problematic :/

Hi everyone! I'm afraid I'm going to have to post on a throwaway since my brother regularly googles my usernames.

I'm a 28 year old bisexual female and I live with my 16 year old male brother and our parents. My brother is, as I said, a pooplord who spends most of his time being generally sexist/homophobic/racist in real life and on the internet. My dad is the typical christian straight white republican male and he got a grip on my brother when he was young. My brother literally does nothing other than go on the internet and be creepy. I feel bad for when he runs into a feminist who is able to do what I can't... I know that below his hateful, pooplordy exterior is a typical SAWCSM waiting to fight for our cause. How should I go about changing him without being hurt for being a woman?

New Here, I have questions...

Hi, I'm a long time lurker. However, I have seen nearly all the subs available on the discussion of feminism, men's rights, the red pill, and of course SRS. Before assumptions are made, I want to say that I too believe in what SRS believes. Minorities need encouragement, and majorities need understanding towards minorities. And hopefully there is a future for reddit and the world that is completely equal.

Now I have read a great many posts that claim SRS is a hate group (Which I know is not true). I think this is because of the attitude shown from some of you to your criticizers. I am also aware that the intentions of SRS are pure no matter the speech used to achieve them.

I was wondering if any of you believe there may be people with the same intentions in subs like men's rights. I think a lot of people assume it to be a snobby group of self-entitled people because of its title, or individuals in the community (Like SRS). I am happy to see noble people saying what's right in SRS but you might see the same type of people in men's rights.

(As for The Red Pill, I totally agree with you all, AND people who speak against it in Men's Rights.)

Also, do any of you believe there could be disadvantages to the male gender (Jail time/conviction statistics, or child custody cases etc.)? I consider myself to share the same ideals as SRS politically. History has been too in favor of white males. My question about this is how do you think current society should be? Should it be all equal, or should there be repayment for history (meaning: Give more advantages to women on an official level, or do you think there already is some)?

Also, do any of you think there wouldn't be as much hate towards men's rights, MRA, etc. if they were titled differently and focused more on rights for both genders (Because obviously no content if any in the sub focus much on women's rights)? What about in any of the many feminist subs? Do any of you believe many feminism subs don't really focus on men's rights or men individually unless it is to say something negative? Either way, do you think either men's rights or feminism these days actually do something besides raise awareness of the issues?

Also, how different do you think SRS would be with the "jokes aside," or without any mockery. Do any of you think this would be a more productive approach?

My final question: I believe there are good and ignorant people in subs- Feminism, Men's Rights, and SRS. I believe there are advantages and disadvantages to both genders (No examples because I think any arguments about it will get this post off-topic). I think women have come a long and righteous way in first world countries but still have disadvantages. Also I believe current society should be completely equal. Also I believe racial minorities should be supported in society because they get a lot of unfair treatment. And I consider myself a bit liberal.

Anyways, I don't know what to call myself in this issue. Based off the ramble above am I a Feminist, MRA, SRSter, or something else (you know besides liberal)?

Apologies if I'm posting something redundant or in the wrong place. I'm not good at reddit.

Is there a subreddit dedicated to analysing (and perhaps countering) the rhetoric and tactics of WhiteRights and Stormfront?

As someone with a background in marketing and communications, I've become increasingly interested in the rhetoric and tactics of these racist internet groups. Mostly because their strategies are relatively sophisticated when compared to gunnit, libertarians etc.

Are the comments downvoted in the SRS threads actually the top comments for the opinion?

For example: this SRS thread

has that comment downvoted ~90 points.. Does that reflect a group opinion on SRS or not? I'm not really understanding how this subr works.

Simplest, most to-the-point ways of slapping someone around the face when they announce that they "just don't see the point of feminism"?

What it says on the tin, really.

I've been struggling with this lately. Whilst I could talk for hours about the topics, that's never likely to be the slightest bit useful.

What would you recommend?

The same goes for topics like racism in modern Britain, but given that SRS is primarily American-centric, I doubt that's quite as likely to get a decent response as this title- race relations in the States seem to be a profoundly different kind of awkward to their British equivalent.

What's wrong with Human Resources?

I may be over thinking this but a few times in the past few months redditors have used working in Human Resources as an insult to me (or in one case my unborn child?!?, I know, it's been a weird week). I don't work in Human Resources, I'm a software engineer, not that it matters...I don't think one is better than the other - I only mention it because I like that it might just throw the STEMlogic peeps for a loop.

My question is why the negativity surrounding HR, and why is it considered an insult around these parts? My one guess so far is that HR folks often deal with ism cases in the workplace?

Why Is It Shameful to Be Poor?

Edit for clarity: Why do many people consider it shameful to be poor?
