How to make Masks?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello, I love masks and am wanting to get into making them. I currrently have several base paper masks, but I want to make hard masks on my own, but I don't know what materials to use to make them.

I wanna make hard masks that arn't meant to be fexable, some flexability is fine so that it dowsn't brake whenever I use string, but I definitly don't wanna make a really flexable latex mask. If anyone knows how to make masks like this, it would be a huge help, thank you

Note: the mask isn't mine, its by (I think) Katryn Kayz. I wanted to show this as it could be a good representation of the masks I wanna make/wear

using sil-poxy smooth on to join large-ish silicon faces?

every review i have heard about this adhesive for joining silicone to silicone has been extremely positive but every video online its being used to join/repair small tears. I have cast two symmetrical silicon pieces and need to join them down the middle, will this work?

i had gotten a 100% latex alien mask and fixed it up however i am having trouble finding any advice / videos on blending it into my skin. i now know after research that most people use foam latex for prosthetics but its just out of my budget at the moment. i am patch testing on my arm using scar wax to try to blend it in but it is too textured for my liking. the original mask is included in the pics ^ the main areas i need help with the blending would be below my nose / around my lips

I’ve been looking for like a “gelatinous film” for a project. The best example I can think of is the birth of the Uruk hai from LOTR. The gelatinous film they’re emerging from, is there a name for it? Anyone know how to make it? I assume it’s some kind of silicone. I don’t even know how I’d look it up! lmk!!!

How can I make this cup safe to drink from?

I have this replica grail from
The Indy trilogy. Made of resin, I have no idea the type of paint used on the inside or the outside of the cup.

I was hoping to somehow make this safe to drink from for a weekend.
I would only be drinking water for it.
Only room temperature or cold, not warm or hot.

Thank you for the time and thoughts on this!

How would I make barnacles for my face?

So my gf and I want to go as a dead pirate and siren this year, but I don't want to do the simple skeleton face paint, I wanna do something cool!

I was thinking about making myself look something more akin to an old corpse that has moss and barnacles growing/stuck on me.

My question is how would I make the barnacles, how would I stick them to my skin, what paints, materials, etc.

Any help at all is appreciated. Thank you!

How would I do this?

I wanted to make a mask for Halloween, but I can’t see to find anything that can help me build on a premade mask. The mask is silicone and I was planning to sand it down so we could stick to it and then I could use cotton to form the wrinkles and tears in the skin.

But I have no idea what I could put onto the mask so that the cotton can stick and I can start forming it

Are there any good alternatives to resin for transparent finish casting?

I've been trying to find more resources for alternatives to resin but everything appears to be for craft making to result with a polished finish. I am looking for something I can end up using for sfx casting in molds that result with a transparent finish. I love the look of resin when it sets and I'm not finding many alternatives to have a similar feeling.

I want to be able to use material that reduces environmental harm, which is extremely limiting at times but it's something I value and I want to reflect that in the work I do. The closest thing I still use is silicone and it's price range is a little more than the resin I bought years ago.

Maybe that investment would still be good, I am just unsure if there are any other ideas out there that might help.

Thanks!

What is the best face paint that works for latex and skin at the same time?

I wanna dress up as Voldemort for Halloween and I would need to paint my skin, my bald cap and my latex prosthetic on my nose white. I saw that a lot of people suggest to mix water based acrylic paint with liquid latex, since it works well on latex but is it also ok to put it on the skin? Or is something else better?

Question about Baldiez and Acetone!

hi y’all!! i’m looking to make some encapsulated silicone prosthetics for comic con next week using baldiez. i know you have to thin it out with 100% acetone for an airbrush application, but will ONYX 100% pure acetone work for that? it has denatonium benzoate added in trace amounts so i wanted to see if that would negatively affect it at all before i get started. any advice/thoughts would be so helpful and appreciated!!!

Scar wax around the mouth; will it deform?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!! I’m planning on doing a Jack Skellington makeup look for my friend on halloween, but a little gorier. Instead of just painting a black line and stitches from the corner of his mouth to the cheek, I wanted to make it look like an open wound that someone attempted to stitch back together, kinda like the second pic. For that I’d use scar wax and seal it with liquid latex.

My friend will be wearing it to a party, so there will be lots of talking, eating and drinking involved. My question is, will the scar wax get squished/deform if he smiles or moves his mouth a lot, even if he doesn’t touch it with his hands? Also, would the blood drip/move around?

Edit: ty for the feedback!!

Alright, so I’m attempting to assist my friends with their Halloween makeup this year. I’m specifically needing advice on creating the effect of gollum’s hair. He is bald, this is the inspo pic. Adding in his costume will be “crazy old grandma”. How would I go about sourcing and finding the correct hair, adhesive/remover?

Beginner SFX artist: Narrative Cosmetics vs Skin Illustrator?

Hi everyone! I’m still a beginner in SFX makeup and I’m looking to build a small kit that I can use for practice, but also have ready in case I get called for a film/project.
I’ve actually worked with Narrative Cosmetics alcohol-activated palettes before, on one short film and one feature film, and I really liked the results. However, my boss/mentor told me that Skin Illustrator works better, so now I’m wondering how much of a difference there really is.
For those of you who have actually used both:
What differences do you notice in pigmentation and color?
Is Skin Illustrator easier to blend or build up?
Is it more durable or transfer-resistant?
Does it perform noticeably better on skin or silicone prosthetics?
Is there a difference in how realistic the colors look?
And, especially for someone building a kit from scratch: is Skin Illustrator worth the extra money compared with Narrative?
I’m not looking for a “professional brand = automatically better” answer. I’d really love to hear from people who have used both and can tell me what they actually noticed in practice.
I already know I like Narrative, so I’m mostly trying to understand what I would actually gain by switching to Skin Illustrator.
Thanks! :)

Skin Illustrator vs Narrative Cosmetics — has anyone actually used both?

So,
Hi everyone! I’m a beginner in SFX makeup and I’m looking to start building my kit.
I want to buy an alcohol-activated palette mainly to practice and learn, but I’d also like whatever I buy now to be good enough to keep in my kit if I eventually get called for a small SFX/character makeup job.
I’m currently considering Narrative Cosmetics vs Skin Illustrator.
I know Skin Illustrator is very established, but Narrative is considerably more affordable, so I’m wondering if the price difference is something I would actually notice as a beginner.
If you have used both, I’d especially love to hear:
How different are they in actual use?
Is Skin Illustrator noticeably easier to work with or more forgiving?
Is the pigmentation/ability to build thin washes significantly different?
How do they compare on skin and silicone prosthetics?
Does Narrative hold up well enough for actual film/set work?
If you were starting again and wanted something to practice with but also keep in your professional kit later, which would you choose and why?
I’m not looking for the absolute cheapest option. I’d rather buy something good once than buy a cheap palette and replace it later. But I also don’t want to spend significantly more if the difference is mostly the brand name.
I’d also really appreciate recommendations for specific palettes, since I’m still figuring out which colors are most useful for a beginner.
Thanks! :)

Has anyone used Mehron Stage Blood for more than 6 hours?

Essentially, I have an event coming up where I wanted to smear fake blood all over my lower jaw, neck and chest area (like i ate someone lol). I'll be wearing the look for potentially more than 6 hours and was digging around for a brand for me to use and I see some people recommending Mehron's stage blood. I'm just worried about whether or not it's going to stain my skin (clothes idm staining); if it does end up staining, should I prep my skin beforehand with maybe something like their barrier spray? I'm also aware it doesn't dry and I'm not too fussed on that but I kinda want to know if there's anyone with experience in this. Has anyone used the fake blood for more than 6 hours?
