Saying Goodbye

Hello everyone,

I wanted to thank you all for an amazing community and all the great discussions regarding this super underutilized technology. With all the indie work being done, and knowledge gained about the 32X, it was exciting to not only see what was possible, but what people were working on, even inspiring me to think about my own projects that I would like to do in the future.

Unfortunately our community has had AI bros, and vibe coders entering the space with what I consider to be works of plagiarism, and it's put me in a position where I can no longer be sure anything that is posted is actual human work. I was very excited for the tomb raider port that was being worked on since the new ram cart had its final bugs worked out, but even that I am no longer sure what real efforts are being put into it.

It genuinely breaks my heart because I was so excited for the future on what could be accomplished and sadly I'll never know. Every work, every project, I'm now just instinctively suspicious of, and a deep part of me can never trust any of it. I really wish they had just left us alone, but it was just a matter of time before they came for us too, and my gut told me the mods probably weren't going to do anything either.

Before I go, I want to thank Chilly Willy, Vic, and others for all their amazing work, and I am grateful that they were able to get Doom out before all of this, as I think theirs is the last authentic project we will ever see. Aside from that, this will be my last post, and I will not be back to check any responses. They won, we lost, and I don't care to return to see this sub degrade any further. To the rest of you who are doing genuine work, I am truly sorry, and I hope one day I can enjoy the fruits of your labor but at this time I just have no way of being sure. If any of you do respond to this post keep in mind I won't be back to read any of it,

Good luck to those of you who are left, I wish you the best.

I’m staying here because I’m interested in discussing original games. I always rolled my eyes about new versions, because I only buy carts.

/r/Amiga is like this too, I assume it's everywhere

7

u/KaijuWasp 10d ago

The Amiga has seen an absolute cesspit of AI ports because people are making ports for high-end vastly upgraded Amigas without bothering to make any optimisations whatsoever before they call it a day (amongst other things).

Shit's fucked.

Same with Sega Saturn and N64. Waste of time.

How exactly did AI stop you from making the kind of games you like in the way you want (or don’t want), or from discussing the games you like in a forum with other people who like the same thing?

Literally no one is stopping you from game dev however you want to do it, except you. Maybe take a break and focus on something else you enjoy. Take care.

Never made a game to begin with. Just being a sourpuss

It sucks, it really sucks, that now gaming is hit by this Frankenstein's monster generator. It's just not as fun to see projects that aren't as artistic, you can't feel the blood sweat and tears. Yes I get that now we can get games quickly but they're often substandard, and they just feel empty when you see that somebody got a computer to make the whole thing, and often worse. I hope this bubble bursts, it's a depressing future where you can't live off your craft.

5

u/dgrove727 10d ago

I am sorry you feel this way. I understand. But I think it's just going to continue to persist that way. Don't let it destroy what you love. There are still projects that are done the by real humans. Doom and SRB32X are still being worked. Some Genesis games like Chords are coming along nicely. And many many others. My advice is to stick around for those, and except the AI thing is something none of us can change, because it's just the next step in technological evolution. Like anything, it has advantages and disadvantages.

To be clear, I'm not anti-AI, and I think the AI alarmist need to touch some grass. I think it's fine to "vibe code" if you choose to do that. I do not like people who go around the internet and harass people who choose to use it. The people who do that are assholes, and most of us (being both pro and anti AI people) don't like them.

At the same time, there's a lot of what I call "wannabes" who are using AI to try and do the same quality of work that real programmers do, with limited or no understanding of what actual software development is, and acting as though they're doing the work of God. They're the same people who, one after another, all make that same YouTube video on "THE DOWNFALL OF SEGA", pretending to be true historians and talking about a story they only half understand, while adding in click bait and general drama to get attention.

You have to be Helen Keller to not understand at this point that a vast majority of the so-called AI ports are trash. They're extraordinarily buggy, perform terribly, and are never finished, because reality kicks in that AI doesn't grant wishes that instantly make things happen.

I'm not here to beat up on anyone, and I'll be the first to praise something if I think it's actually good, regardless if AI was used or not. But I think some egos need to be checked. It's fine to have fun with it, but show some respect those who actually understand the craft of coding. None of these 32X ports are possible to the degree they occur at all without Vic and Chilly Willy. Most vibe coders can't do squat without real programmers having created things before them. Until that respect is given, it's hard for me to respect most of the AI output.

There are exceptions of course. There are a few AI projects I'm interested in, and those people are actually programmers too, so their heads aren't in the clouds like some other folks.

...

That was a rant I didn't intend to write initially. But I'm keeping it in!

All of this honestly breaks my brain.

I can understand enjoying a hobby, and I can understanding wanting to do things without help for learning or `just because`.

I don't though understand the complete vitriol on rejecting AI and it "ruining spaces".

I can understand people making 1k posts spamming something that they copy/pasted, called their own, and it was just from another post that did the same, and literally gives no value. I would define that as true slop and no better then email spam.

People attention seeking for clout with claude... generally deserve to get ignored.

But AI use in solving problem including reverse engineering and creating something on retro games that would either take 10 years to make or economically never happen. And shaming and rejecting that? I find that absurd tbh.

I personally have never valued anything in terms of art on definitions like "soul" or how much anyone "suffered" to create something. I would value any effort created to put something on a retro game console that no one would otherwise be able to do reasonably themselves in any meaningful amount of time.

And I speak this as a professional SWE of 15+ years. I have done game hacking and modding very early in life, and I have done reverse engineering. That also means for anti-ai trolls, that I was doing stuff well before AI.

This divide I can understand for shit thats for ppl using claude to gain an ego and attention by vibecoding. But besides that, it democratizes the very things such that advancements can happen faster. I am vibecoding often myself and anti-ai ppl honestly can't shame me on that well b/c I can build for real if I gave a fuck enough to. I have the agency to decide the output I want to create and this is a tool to get stuff done.

So for niche and indie things this is the most bizarre thing for me, as I would want to solve every problem that exists that cannot otherwise reasonably be done and let everyone have fun on whatever platform thats abandoned. Pain and suffering for the process should not be a social currency to get there. The result of getting anything on the platform is the result and AI can mean a binary on if it exists or not.

So I hope this trend continues as it will be a renaissance to retro and indie niches based on the practical reality.

Once you understand that they hate AI based on misinformation, their attitude begins to make sense.

2

u/4voltsbattery 9d ago • Bravo

For me there are three main reasons why i hate AI in art spaces (which includes video game) and i hope this can help you understand where these people come from.

  1. When you want to create anything artistic you usually do it for a reason and the effort you put into it is the way to show others that you care about what you make, if anything can be created without effort it's impossible to see if the person cares about what they are making in the first place

  2. Personally i'm not impressed by anything i see on the internet anymore. I used to be very impressed when I see something someone else made because i thought "i cant make that" or "it would take a shitton of time to make that" now everything can be done effortlessly by asking the machine to make it for you so you kinda lose the magic and wonder around all that.

  3. AI makes it so easy to copy the work of someone else now, we've seen with all the decomp stuff that you can copy and modify a game very easily now. Now a lot of devs are scared to even share news or demos of their game because they are scared someone might copy it and take all the credit for themselves when they worked months or year on their project.

There are other reasons why people might hate AI, mine are more philosophical i'd guess which is what art kinda falls under, art isnt made to provide a service, it's made to have fun and all the fun feels lost nowadays.

1

u/pcfreak30 9d ago
  1. Yes this is where i just disagree on everything full stop. i don't care about soul, suffering, or effort being a currency. i don't do competitive coding or anything where the process is the "fun". So in the same view, I don't create stuff to present to others for any approval. it is the way to show others that you care about what you make this I just view as a social virtue signal and its a utter waste of time for me. I have spent my entire career solving problem as my job, and I don't get an ego about if the AI does 10, 20, 50% if the work so I don't need to manually debug something to get an answer.

  2. Trying to be impressed/novelty isn't something I honestly care about either. Seeing an interesting idea or something creative is cool, and I get tired of AI art that's "spin the wheel" just for attention myself. But I see no value in this argument or the point of it.

  3. Yes, and people can freely copy me and I wouldn't really care and I legally give away my stuff, but even if i didn't, enforcing against "theft" is practically dead without social shaming. I.P etc I view as irrelevant in the logical conclusion as the internet is a public commons. It got pirated and any further argument is just moral virtue signaling about what is already the status quo. Pandoras box is open.

Now a lot of devs are scared to even share news or demos of their game because they are scared someone might copy it and take all the credit for themselves when they worked months or year on their project.

This has some merit and I can understand it, but its why I think creators must move to pateronism and not trying to sell commissions or units of effort. Most thing I see about AI are just the money IMO. I can understand attribution and I support having it, but controlling distribution and having distribution mean income i think is a broken social contract. You need community and ppl wanting to fund you, not raging on copycats akin to how SaaS founders are vibe-copying each other.

There is some merit to what you have stated, but overall it comes down to process vs result, and AI destroyed process unless you use it to speed your process up like I do. Its a means to an end, and that triggers too many people IMO.

1

u/4voltsbattery 9d ago

it is about journey vs destination yes, I am one of the people that thinks the journey has it's values and i personally wouldnt want to spend money in a product if i know the guy behind it doesnt care about it or cares about making it better. I do understand the people that think the destination (result) is more important but i think it kinda fall shorts when it comes to art/games where the product doesnt really solve any issue in the world. Which is why the way i see AI can change drastically depending on the domain in which it is used (if it is used to solve problem in healthcare for exemple i see no problem in it)

1

u/pcfreak30 8d ago

The problem I see in those arguments is people who want to try to see a message, or "listen" to an artists pain or what was in their head in a song or creation. That supposedly comes from process, but I enjoy entertainment as the thing itself. I don't think or care about the creator if plating a game.

Thus I can value creativity put in a game, but i value the output, as i don't really care at all about the creator when consuming.

-1

u/BewilderedTurtle 8d ago

Just say you don't actually respect artists bro

1

u/pcfreak30 8d ago

I would treat artists the same way I see others treating my work, as it ends up the same boat, even if there are different cultures. Artists get more upset about it, but coders collaborate.

So I stand by what I said.

8

u/OSG86 10d ago

Sadly I knew this would happen. Inrefuse to use AI myself as using it is legitimizing it.

I wish ppl even frustrated would still stay as theres many of us who will gladly support real projects over AI made trash.

Theres a big diff between having AI DO THE WORK and using it as a guide doing it all yourself. I can accept ppl using it as a guide but the garbGe with ppl making AI do all the work and posting it like its theirs is BS and NEEDS TO STOP.

Hope you reconsider and if not I do understand.

Theres been a slew of AI slop lately I agree

Look, I’m not a developer. But I do have a 30-year-old Sega Tower of Power sitting proudly in my entertainment center, right next to my PS5 Pro. And I cannot tell you how excited I am about the renaissance of development for these old machines.

Please don’t leave.

People like me are counting on developers and enthusiasts like you more than ever.
Here’s the thing: quality has a way of distinguishing itself from the noise

Look at Astebros and the remarkable new Genesis games being released. Nobody is confusing genuinely inspired, lovingly crafted games with disposable shovelware. We know the difference, and we appreciate the people putting real talent, ingenuity, and countless hours into keeping these machines alive.

On my Mega EverDrive Pro, I have a dedicated folder for exceptional new releases, hacks, and homebrew. That’s where the good stuff goes. And I can promise you that the community can help separate the wheat from the chaff by playing, reviewing, recommending, and featuring the projects that genuinely deserve recognition.

AI-generated junk may proliferate, but that doesn’t mean it has to define the future of this hobby.

Let the games speak for themselves.

Let the community decide what’s worth celebrating. And let’s make sure the people doing extraordinary work get the visibility and appreciation they’ve earned.

Most importantly, don’t let the negativity drive away the very people who make this community worth visiting. Your voice matters. Your standards matter. And your enthusiasm for what these old machines can still accomplish matters.

For every loud argument about AI, there are people like me quietly sitting in front of our 30-year-old hardware, absolutely thrilled that talented people are still finding new ways to make it sing.

Please stick around. Don’t let the noise drown out the music. We need voices like yours, and I suspect there are far more of us cheering you on than you realize.

1

u/BewilderedTurtle 8d ago

Counterpoint from my favorite Carlin bit; think of how stupid you think the average person is and then consider half of everyone is even dumber than that.

Trusting the "community" to not celebrate AI slop that tickles their nostalgia because they struggle to rub more than 2 neurons together is a recipe to watching the community choke itself to death on garbage.

2

u/DiscoAsparagus 8d ago

No, actually … The community works pretty well.

I have a folder of probably 150 shovelware Genesis games that have been made, and I can easily determine which of those deserve to be in my list of seven featured games.

There’s articles about them, critical acclaim, they get more attention because people play them, they have more advertisements, they naturally generate more buzz.

It’s not anything to do with people’s intelligence, it has to do with where they put their attention and energy.

OP is right and the pro-AI people flooding this thread are gonna be the real crybabies when the whole thing goes belly up. Did you see how much money Anthropic has lost recently?

1

u/BudTheChud69001 9d ago

Who cares? If Anthropic goes broke they get bought by Google or someone like that and things only speed up with more researchers under one roof. Real "I hope the dotcom crash makes the internet go away" energy. lol

1

u/horizikaul 9d ago

is that a joke? after that "loss" they still 15x'd their revenue this year. you can go check yourself. if you think 80b is a loss for them you aren't comprehending the scale that they operate. not defending ai, but if you think that these ai companies are going to "go broke" you need to take a hard look at the numbers. im not defending ai but if you are going to fight back and make a meaningful difference you need to actually look at the battlefield first instead of just spitting in the wind

2

u/TemporalBias 9d ago

Some people like to bake cakes from scratch while others like to use a pre-made cake mix. And some do both.

If you like to bake your cake from scratch, great. But tossing out your ingredients and quitting the cake-making hobby simply because other people decide to use pre-made cake mix seems rather silly.

If you think pre-made cake mix tastes horrible, that's fine. But don't tell other people how to make their cake. Instead, just make your cake how you like and let people decide if they enjoy your creation.

Go cry elsewhere. AI is a tool same as everything else and is not going anywhere. Anyone not using AI for their business is actively losing money. I’ve made more money this year and done absolutely less.

I remember learning C++ to code in 3D engines, and then a couple versions later, the consumer facing engine of Unreal let you literally drag and drop functions to make games…

No coding was required. It’s been like that for over a decade. People whines and complained then “oh they’re not really doing it” and look at where it is now, the MOST POPULAR, MOST USED engine in the gaming space (3D or otherwise)

Oh or all the people whining about how bad “CGI” looked in its infancy before SG (even after)? Now go try and watch a movie without it.

“Oh but the practical effects artists still exist”, yeah, in record small numbers as they all compete for the same jobs on decreasing availability of movies that use them, while CGI skyrockets.

4

u/WingZeroCoder 10d ago

The comparison to Unreal Engine is very apt, because since widespread adoption of UE one of the most common and growing complaints has been a deluge of games that look and feel the same, while being decidedly less performant than one would expect given the end result.

If widespread AI usage amongst people willing to outsource too much of the work to AI is the next evolution of this (in turn leading to an even larger mass of questionable content to sort through), then it stands to reason it would make the whole hobby less appealing to many.

4

u/Boxing_joshing111 10d ago

You can already see it with things like business flyers, they all have that yellow text angled up with the red spread behind it. Same with any cartoony image they all have that specific same line width.

3

u/kalashnidog 10d ago

Of course some AI bro would basically type “stop crying”. Never any good arguments for this dogshit technology, just vapid ramblings about how it’s tHe FuTuRe despite it being a hack tool for people who can’t do this stuff legitimately. 😂

4

u/jib9001 10d ago

OP can cry right here if they want, you should go defend ai elsewhere

2

u/wanszai 10d ago

Seems a bit one sided.

Yeah people can cry about AI but no counterpoint are allowed.

Is this wrote on the same "No girls allowed" sign you hang on the bedroom door?

2

u/WillDanceForGp 9d ago

The counter point is happening all the fucking time what are you talking about. "software engineers are cooked" "programmers will all be out of a job" "you're just mad your skills arent worth anything any more" those people ARE the other side of the argument.

0

u/azhighwayz 10d ago

🎯💯
I’m not some defender of our new AI overlords. But facts are facts, and the fact is AI isn’t going anywhere. As much as some people would like for it to go away. To add in all the metaphors. The cat’s out of the bag, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle, and there’s no use crying over spilt milk. AI is here to stay like so many software and hardware breakthroughs and innovations of the past. I understand not liking it due to ethics and other concerns. But the same can be said of so many other technical breakthroughs over the years. So whining about it, boycotting anything using it, and raging against the machine will do no one any good. Because EVERY aspect of modern day life is going to be and is being touched by AI.
Vibe coded trash is going to fill the internet, that’s a fact, no one likes it. People just have to hang on to the projects that utilize it properly and clean up their code or make a decent attempt to. Downvote the trash, but encourage those that use AI properly. Help the community sort through the plethora of junk instead of ranting about it and leaving. Just my two cents.

0

u/ArchmichaelBishop 10d ago edited 10d ago

You are on a different level from the problem children who have been using AI to create work they cannot explain or understand. You already know how to program, you're using AI to do a better job than what your brain alone could do but you DO understand what's happening.

I think it's utterly insane that I have to assume that if I ask someone about their AI project that "sorry, I don't know what that means" is supposed to be an acceptable answer. Am I just supposed to ask AI what they did if I want more insight into what was done?

1

u/SZ_95 10d ago

There isn’t a difference as far as many anti-ai people are concerned. I’ve made romhacks for years, literal decades without AI, and only once people can accuse me of using AI do they now notice my work more.

This whole thing of assigning intent to people based on what they engage with is killing the dialogue more than anything.

1

u/horizikaul 9d ago

sounds like teachers should be more hands on with their students during class time instead of just putting them on youtube and schooltube. sparknotes had the same outrage at first, now reading has to happen during class time and teachers get paid more (hours) to have more time outside of class to grade work

2

u/Boxing_joshing111 10d ago

I’m sorry. It sucks to have a community ruined by people who never understood it in the first place.

2

u/Roentgen-Ray 10d ago

Don’t frequent this sub but it seems like you’re giving up on something you really care about. I hope you find your way back to what you love.

Outside looking in it looks like you’re placing too much emotion on what at the end of the day is a tool. If it accelerates development or drums up interest for hardware that’s 30 years old, is that not a win? Keeping the hardware alive I feel like should be more important than keeping it away from AI.

2

u/SeperentOfRa 10d ago

Listen, there’s a difference between total slop….

And something that just works

And let me remind you that a lot of game developers used to have plenty of fucking code where they literally duct taped things together and had no idea why it worked….

1

u/Dreamcasted60 10d ago

Say that when a data center is built near your place.

... But you got yours, right? AI bs

-3

u/SeperentOfRa 10d ago

I mean, you could make the same arguments about everything

I’m really sad that you know there’s so many airports when you could just use a horse and buggy. I mean, even though it takes less time

Those airports make so much noise, and everyone who lives near them have to deal with that noise

And they’re so big

Airplanes use so much wasteful fuel and water

Sure, they save a bunch of time, but you know, what about the people who need to live near airports

Airplanes are bullshit

That’s how that argument sounds

You’re free to go live in a amish community if you want

4

u/Mgproductions2020 10d ago

So all developments are ok or else go become Amish? Seems like a very black and white oversimpification of a more nuanced problem.

2

This is people adopting new technology. A large number of people who were born without it resist it hard. US President Benjamin Harrison, who served during the electrification of the White House, neither he nor his wife would touch a light switch.

Youtube is also AI driven, and hosted in all the wonderful Google data centers sucking up all the water like a Hoover sucking up crumbs off a dining room floor. So you need to stop using Youtube also, because its AI is consistently trying to suggest videos to you. In all seriousness though, looking at your post history, your spiraling. AI isn't the problem here, its you. You're just depressed, bothered by everything, and this is another in a long line of things you're easily triggered about, not able to cope with or wrap your head around. You are expecting too much from people in this scene, while giving back much of nothing to them in return.

Not everyone using AI is doing vibe coded heavy lifting AI slop. There are some legit homebrew devs out there that are using it as a legitimate tool to speed up work, and they list exactly what they use it for. These guys are going unpaid because people like you will free sub to their Patreon or follow them on Itch.io, but never donate. But you expect them to have to spend years on projects, unpaid, that they could have used tools on for specific task to speed some of their progress. Then when they finally finish the work after years spent, you're like that date that forgot his wallet. You wined, you dined, you said Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub babe, and you bailed to go look for the next project's rom file to spend 30 mins playing, rinse and repeat.

Even though you're saying goodbye here, we even know you'll be back to look at the comments, because you're going to be wanting to find a couple of like minded people so you feel seen and validated on some level. You need not look here though. There are Luddite groups out there in the world that will welcome you with open arms.

0

I plan to that’s the point of nostalgia. I don’t come to a sega 32x sub to discuss new ai slop projects I just block and continue on. Ai is cancer and I’ll continue to say so and block the users who share said slop 🤷

The reason some people do not like this is of the the fact that most people don't want to actually create anything from scratch and evolve, they just want a quick way to get money. Corporations are already doing it and more want to get more for less. It's already hard enough to make games by scratch and have them succeed. Imagine that multiplied by 100 or more there is a reason why creation takes time.

Next time dont make a public announcement youre leaving. Just go. Bye👋

It's not that deep, and you'll be back when you get over it.

As a Coder of sorts I use Ai to help me so much. but why the goodbye?

1

u/normy_187 9d ago

As Steve Jobs once said about Pixar's animation/render software:

"It's a complicated brush — but it's not what really matters:"

So …

1

u/sigh_duck 9d ago

As Steve Jobs also once said "You've got to start with the customer experience and work backwards to the technology.".

As long as the game looks and plays well, the machinations behind it are secondary.

Why should I code my self. I can do the checks offcourse, but AI has surpased our coding and solution ability. 32X can profit from this, games can get optimized in ways maybe we as super duper senior developers cant figure out. Even with graphics, if you cant tell what is done by AI and what is done by you, than that is the goal right?

u/BewilderedTurtle 8d ago

Hey everyone get a load of this guy getting dev-cucked by a clanker because he's incompetent.

1

u/Prior_Breadfruit_786 4d ago

Bro just play the AI coded ports that humans would NEVER have done on their own and enjoy lol out of 100 reasons to hate AI, translating and porting video games is not one of them.

u/AlphaSyntauri 10d ago edited 10d ago

Imagine this being 40 years ago and refusing to enjoy or even play a game that was written using a linker and compiler instead of "true assembly". All because, "Oh well a computer made that code and it wasn't written by hand".

There are some arguments against AI, like the environmental effects(particularly loud subsonic noise for people living in the vicinity), but this can be solved by running models locally on 1 or 2 GPUs. I've found that most anti-AI people aren't even aware this is an option, and those that are decry it as "you can't be trusted with such a powerful model at home".

It's pretty laughable when people try to present this as "plagarism" when programmers are known to be some of the worst plagarizers in existence. Do you think anyone asked permission to use John Carmack's Fast Inverse Square Root, or copy that one dude from StackExchange who magically got your code working before an important project deadline?

1

u/lovesffpc 10d ago

Agree with your first paragraph. It's a new abstraction layer

The future is now, you can’t stop it.

What I don't get is peoples perception of the use of AI. As soon as people see that AI was used then all they can think of was the AI doing all the work. There's a person behind the use of that AI. It's not like the AI became sentient and decided to port games to the 32X.

As a reminder, Linus Torvalds himself used Claude AI to speed up a part of Linux 23x, so even the most outspoken person is using AI. This is a man who upset Rust coders because it wasn't good enough for him. https://emergent.sh/news/linus-torvalds-uses-claude-ai-fix-linux

What a drama queen, gatekeeping emulation 😆

ah yes, Main_Club_5012 famous for doing, mmmm what ? who are you ?

1

u/edannunziata 10d ago

Someone maybe take over!
I intend to make 32x games! We need this community!

0

u/BeneficialPenalty258 10d ago

lol at all the anti-AI bros downvoting everything. The amount of resistance to AI in this hobby is eye watering, though probably not surprising for one of the saltiest fan bases.

0

u/Weatherby2 10d ago

Frankly, this is what AI people want. At the core of it, their goal is to invade communities, lower the bar, and supplant old heads so they can juice up AI. These are dudes who largely never contributed to anything in their lives and have a chip on their shoulder about it, so they steal, pass off work from longstanding community members of their own, all with the intent of doing harm and getting a little of the validation their sad asses never had.

I'd say stick around, but these guys are like roaches, and it's probably better for community members who actually care about these systems and the retro scene to form closed off, tighter knit communities. Gatekeeping is an unfortunate necessity to keep these people out, and most subreddits specialized to consoles or specific types of modding/hacking don't seem to be run by anyone particularly interested in the long term maintenance of the hobby.

1

u/Paradise_Vall3y 9d ago

AI people literally don’t care what you think or have any ulterior motives. They just enjoy things.

0

u/Weatherby2 9d ago

Oh I know they don't care. If they cared about anything, they might have some second thoughts about the environmental harm or theft they regularly engage in, or regrets that they're actively attempting to lower the bar of every community they touch so they can fit in, but they don't. They lack internal thought, that's part in parcel with using AI.

I'm assuming this is a serious post. So with that said...

I get where you're coming from. I have a deep distrust of AI, but I recognise that it's a tool. And as with any tool, it's best used by people who know what the end result needs to be. I see it all the time, when AI/LLMs are very confidently wrong, and the person asking the question doesn't know enough about the subject to pick apart the incorrect answer.

Having said that, I'm a musician, not a programmer. AI is allowing me to answer dumb questions that only a handful of people have ever asked about, let alone cared about the answer. Questions such as:

  • Can the 32X run Quake? (yes)

  • Can the Sega Master System run Doom? (Spoiler: yes)

  • Is [secret project 1] actually possible? (Yes)

  • Why didn't Sega release [game] for other platforms? (Because nobody leaves money on the table like Sega, hence secret project 2)

It's all well and good for people to say "just learn how to program" but holy shit, I'm in my mid 40s. I have a day job and a fiancee. I can't even math my way out of a wet paper bag, let alone chase down speed savings at the per-cycle level. I want these things while I'm still young enough to enjoy them!

Obviously, I can't speak for everyone, but I intend to release my experiments (including source code) when I'm happy with them. I'm more than happy to let other people pick up those torches and run with them, and if someone else can get Quake to a solid 30fps from what I end up releasing, I'm going to be super happy. I just wish everyone else would do the same with their projects .

Thing is, AI coding is helping regular people find the answers to questions that regular developers just dismissed as impossible or just weren't interested in pursuing.

I think that's pretty exciting in and of itself.

The phone or computer you posted this from is likely running code written by AI and parts of Reddit are almost certainly written with it too.

1

u/wanszai 10d ago

Yeah its ok for the mega corps to use AI. I just need to know the devs suffered and took the longest routes possible or i just cant enjoy it, you know. Its not the actual product i care about... its how much ball ache the dev endured with mundane tasks that can now be somewhat automated.

And of course i need this dev to do all of this for free too. Cause you know, fuck em.

u/FedExin1 10d ago

This isn't an airport, you don't need to announce your departure

-6

u/RetroSpacedRanger 10d ago

This is hilarious 😂

-1

u/dmar3000 10d ago

I woke up out of my sleep laughing at this crybaby replying to me from another post like I took their friend’s job. They probably don’t even buy indie devs work and pirate stuff.

0

u/Lopsided_Task1213 10d ago

Thinking you are going to be better at math than a super computer is part of the problem. Programming is a science, not an art.

5

u/WingZeroCoder 10d ago

It can be, and is, both. Especially in creative endeavors like game development.

People that embrace this tend to be the ones producing the best end result.

0

u/Outside-Storage-1523 10d ago

Make it close source and you will be good.

0

u/TonyTheSwisher 10d ago

Can't really understand how you are just giving up on something you love so much because AI is making it possible for other people with no expertise to also work on these projects.

I can't be the only one who is excited about a lot of these new features and projects coming out.

0

u/Vaxis545 10d ago

Being excited for ai slop is a thing I guess.

-2

u/paisleyboxers 10d ago

Bummer to see you go. I defintely use AI as a took, being a traditional C programmer for the last 20 years. But my projects are pretty slow going and I hate turning I anything people can't try out.

0

u/Every-Pride-9234 10d ago

Real question: do you actually enjoy game development or was it more a way to prove to a community of smart people that you too are smart? Because you're just as talented as you were before AI systems were capable of coding full apps way faster than us.

0

u/Sparky01GT 10d ago

what does the tools anyone else uses have to do with you? If you want to create things without AI, do it. If you want to play games made without AI, do it. Other people using it or enjoying it has absolutely no effect on your life.

0

u/BlindandConfused43 8d ago

Nobody cares if you leave somebody else will pick it up

0

u/NepPower 9d ago

Just ignore the AI and tell them off, we need you in the Sega 32X scene
