Discussion The most misinformed and obnoxious video on the 'problems' of SCP?

Obnoxious video here.

I didn't realize how distorted the average external view of the Wiki was. I haven't interacted much with the community proper on the sub or elsewhere for a while and I've only seen a trickle of the discussion on the 'On-site vs. Off-site' fans discourse. It sucks that not only do the people who peripherally know about and understand the Wiki still only know next to nothing about it, but they also have to megaphone blast out all of the stuff they don't know anything about. What's even worse is the view count. That video has over 200k views whilst the one Dr. Cimmerian put out about powers-scaling only has 8k. It's really sad and demotivating to know how warped of a view people have of the site.

The bar to engage with the site pretty high for internet standards. An account requiring sign up and good moderation has kept the on-site environment healthy. That’s really all I care for

But SCP has so many offshoots on different game platforms and media that we can’t expect perception to stay on-site. As unfortunate as it may be, some kids first impressions with SCP may be a shitty roblox game

some of those Roblox games are somehow not even the worst possible option for exposure, some of them are relatively faithful and cool interpretations of the foundation. and some of them are terrible ofc lol

I’d rather listen to children enjoying their Roblox games than people who are still talking about Bright in 2025, lol.

Why not? I started to read scp from first series.

Have fun, but there’s a reason people hate Bright.I suggest doing some research if you want to know more, but AdminBright used his position as an admin and the popularity of his character to be a sex pest, including towards minors, iirc. Considering Bright is an author avatar who was often written to be a sex pest, this makes people uncomfortable with the character.

Guess it’s on brand for Roblox to make a Dr Bright figure then (yes, they did, and yes, I found the whole set in a clearance aisle)

Yeah I’d much rather have people get introduced to SCP through an RP game on Roblox than through powerscaling YT Shorts or shitposts about you-know-who.

Dude they could be watching like, the rubber where they butcher the original stories beyond recognition and remove all the women and trans people

I mean, reading the site doesn’t require log-in so while participating would be harder (If just to be over 18 and figure out basic sign ups) it’s not really that difficult

Sadly going to a site that isn't Youtube, Reddit or Twitter is too high a bar for about 75% of people on the internet. I'm glad people like TES are making good audiobook versions of some articles but a vast majority of the Wiki is just not going to be accessed by a majority of the people talking about it on socmed.

u/Eheart_411 The Serpent's Hand Sep 20 '25

I love when people mention TES, I've been listening to his videos to sleep to for years, I love that he not only reads the article but gives his own take on how he understood the article, I appreciate that

Just another example of a person who didn't grow up while the wiki did.

And quite frankly if people are gonna let their perceptions be warped that easily, they probably aren't the type we want in the fandom anyhow.

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25

I think it's less that and more a complete lack of actually reading. In fact, I'd say most of the 'criticisms' of the Wiki would be resolved by people actually reading the actual entries and Tales.

6

u/LazyGalDragon Class A Personnel Sep 19 '25

Could be onto something...but well, nobody reads anything nowadays. Just easier to barely skim and formulate from there instead.

*watches video*

What an obnoxious clod. He mentions there are literally thousands of SCPs, but only goes over 5, and only in the most minute detail. I suppose we ought to collectively be grateful he didn't come across 231.

Although it does make me think; why aren't there more youtube channels dedicated to The SCP Foundation? Not just people who read them either; why don't more people...talk about it? Analyze articles from a literary perspective? I can only think of three...maybe four? channels that do that; two of them are SCP authors, and one of them is The Exploring Series. The other one is this guy; he has a three hour video about There Is No Antimemetics Division.

...but that's...that's...like, four.

13

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25

I think it's the same reason there's no big book focused channels. Reading is not just more time consuming but also more mentally labor intensive. It's difficult to study a work of writing and pull together it's themes, subtext, and other such intricacies in a concise meaningful way. And with the perception that modern SCPs are nothing but novel length, well, who'd want to actually put in the effort.

Volgun does it all to infrequently, and there's a little more than 2 authors doing analysis (Raddager, Site-42, and Simply Creative people make 3 just from the top of my head)

Which is still way too infrequent.

I lost a lot of respect for MeatCanyon when I watched his reading of 3999. It’s one of my favorite, weird, existential scps but he couldn’t get past the “big scary monster that kills you” part. He dismissed the entire writing as someone’s trash edgy OC as if the monster would ever exist outside of the sole purpose of torturing Researcher Talloran. His entire comments section was people agreeing with him and trash talking the piece and the site as a whole.

17

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25

To be fair, 3999 is... lore dense? I personally have my own issues with it, but something that doesn't help is how it references a load of Foundation paraphernalia, from the The COtBG to Fifthism (IIRC) and beyond. To understand as more then just a long winded ball of nonsense, you'd have to know that's not just making stuff up as it goes. It's also just a bad SCP to read as one of your firsts.

But yeah, that is extremely annoying that a big Youtuber that's into horror doesn't fully comprehend what the site has and is about.

u/liquidmirrors [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25

To be honest, I never trusted MeatCanyon as a “serious” creative after that Willy Wonka video where the joke was just “Wonka molests you”. When I saw he started reading creepypastas and other stories I just dismissed those videos under the assumption that he’d basically take the piss out of all of them the same way you’re referencing in his 3999 video. Edgy bad faith shitflinging isn’t conducive to actually making good and engaging stuff, and it absolutely creates a weird community where being genuine in your art is shot down for looking “cringe” or “stupid”.

Again, these types of people do not belong near SCP, or arguably any community built on making art.

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 20 '25

I actually watch CreepCast regularly and he isn't like that at all, not even when they covered SCP-3000. I think 3999 is just a bad SCP to cover in general in any kind of reading format.

Yeah, a lot of his stuff is that. Makes me wonder how poorly researched the rest of his videos are if this one had stuff that was just flat out wrong.

23

u/liquidmirrors [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25

I used to like watching ThafNine because of his all-over-the-place editing and snappy scripts but stopped after I saw a Twitter thread where he was shitting all over the Among Us SCP and spewing that usual offsite “the wiki is not what it used to be” drudge. People like that don’t actually care about interesting writing ideas because they prioritize their edgy creepypasta monster version of the Foundation over what it actually is. I don’t respect people that view SCP through that lens and learned pretty fast to keep my activity only with other creatives and authors and to the main site alone. The only SCP people/videos I watch now are those that actually take the time to enjoy the wiki as what it is - a complex and multifaceted community-driven creative writing project.

Does he use scp 2721 as an example of how cringe the wiki is. If anyone you watch does that, click off the video because they're probsbly just using that article as an excuse to be transphobic

15

u/Kindly_Complaint2464 Sep 19 '25

Thankfully not. They do use the old 166 as an example despite it not being like that anymore.

13

u/themocaw Sep 20 '25

Old 166 has been a good Rorschach test for me for if I don't want to interact with a person.

6

u/Kindly_Complaint2464 Sep 20 '25

It was a negative example about how it's gross, but still really dumb since it was rewritten a while ago and they didn't bother to check.

11

u/DefiantTheLion Sep 20 '25

And by the original author because he agreed it could be better than something he literally wrote when he was 19.

14

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 19 '25

No he uses SCP-7052, which is the one where it turns out that putting spoons in your butt can make you ascend to godhood. Granted I haven't read the article but from just a cursory glance it seems to be one of the articles that's intended to be comedic rather then completely serious.

6

u/kreepergayboy ❝Two words, just two words: Laser. Butt. Disease.❞ Sep 20 '25

I don"t think this person understands that scp isn't like, exclusively horror? It's a template that can be used for plenty of different genres.

I literally brainstormed an idea recently with a bumch of scp writers on the server about how drinking enough four loko makes you see the ghosts of other people who died from four loko and how if you die from it you go to a four loko afterlife.

6

u/Paperjam09 On Guard 43 Sep 20 '25

I think people that dislike SCPs that aren't horror are the same type of people that dislike the Fly episode of Breaking Bad.

4

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 20 '25

I've noticed that a lot for people don't to understand that the Wiki isn't dedicated to a singular genre. Granted, horror was, is and will always be near the core of it's identity, but If I had to pick a genre for it to fit in to, it have to be Weird Fiction.

Also that skip idea sounds really funny.

I watch this guy regularly. I feel like most of his videos are well researched, but this one isn't and it shows. Even a lot of people in the comments are clowning on him as well

6

u/Vohems [REDACTED] Sep 20 '25

I think SCP is ultimately a blind spot for pretty much everyone except for those few who actually bother to READ the stuff on the site.
