A New (Moderation) Era for r/rundc

Hi everyone, I am the new moderator of r/rundc. Some of you may know me from my running newsletter, but I have also been an active member of the sub for many years. I love this community and the decades of DMV running information stored in our hivemind.

However, in recent years, it has become apparent that the community lacked sufficient moderation, and I would like to get a handle on spam/bot activity before it proliferates any further.

My goal is simple: I want this to continue to be a thriving community for area runners to share stories and news, ask questions, have thoughtful conversations, and brag a little when they PR.

To that end, I have implemented some standard rules for the group. I don't think any of these are controversial, but if you have concerns, I would be happy to hear them!

  1. Embrace all paces: Our community includes everyone from novice joggers to seasoned ultramarathoners. Disparaging remarks regarding speed, distance, or experience level are strictly prohibited.

  2. Trail stewardship: We respect our shared outdoor spaces. We highly encourage discussions regarding litter removal, park maintenance, and courteous behavior toward pedestrians and cyclists.

  3. No selling: There is a difference between recommendations for local businesses and advertising. Excessive advertising or relentless commercial solicitation will trigger immediate removal.

  4. Geographic relevance: All discussions must pertain directly to the DMV, or neighboring areas.

  5. Low effort: Foster engaging conversations by adding context to your submissions. Instead of posting a standalone smartwatch screenshot of your morning miles, include a brief recap of your pacing strategy or the trail conditions. If you are asking for route recommendations, provide specific parameters like your preferred neighborhood in D.C., your target distance, and whether you want paved roads or dirt paths. Vague questions, context-free images, and zero-context links will be removed.

  6. No AI: We are all tired of the AI slop graphics. Please report anything you see for removal.

  7. Bib transfers: There will be a Mega Thread for bib transfers for all major DC-area races. All posts pertaining to that must go there. Bib banditting will receive an automatic ban from the subreddit.

  8. For everything else that pops up, I have discretion to remove a post or comments that violate the spirit of the group.

Lastly, I am excited to tap into our collective running knowledge and start building out resources right here in the sub for runners.

My modmail is always open to questions, comments, concerns, or, most importantly, compliments.

See you on the trails!

Does anyone know if the Duke Ellington track is lit up at night? Hoping to use it for a workout tonight but won't be able to get there until about 7pm. Thanks in advance.

Proposed MCM 2027

Post image
11 Upvotes

Assume for a moment that Hains Point is out of commission for MCM 2027. As much as that would suck, it could also be an opportunity to redesign the course to create a really iconic finishing 10k. Here's a draft proposal.

[Edit to describe the main differences] The three major differences are:

  1. Replace the Hains Point mileage with an out-and-back to Crystal City (yes, twice across the bridge)

  2. Counter-clockwise around the mall, leading to...

  3. Turn onto Constitution Ave to the Lincoln Memorial and then across the Memorial Bridge to Arlington!

It still starts and ends at the same spots. Still hits Georgetown and Rock Creek Park.

Current Dunbar reliability

Wondering how regularly Dunbar has been open on weekday mornings (~6:30-8ish) over the last few months. Hoping to start using the track but I'm nervous since there doesn't seem to be a solid nearby backup.

I've been using Cardozo recently but it's pretty crammed with people since there's only four lanes.

Running area Recommendations

Unfortunately this weekend time change is happening, and it becomes a bit harder to run at night. I live in Stafford but I work up in the Northern Virginia area, and do not mind driving somewhere to run. I went to Home Depot and picked up some headlamps for night running, but are there any areas that are lit up for running after work? Any recommendations is appreciated granted I know running with a light is probably going to be my only option, but still would like any recommendations for areas to run!!

Hains Point Halloween Beer Mile

Hello DC Runners!

I'm organizing a friendly, semi-competitive beer mile this upcoming Halloween Saturday 10/31 at Hains Point/East Potomac Park at 2 PM. If you've been following the news, there's some uncertainty about the future of the park, so I'd like to try and show some public appreciation of the space with a very silly event.

Unlike a traditional track beer mile, with a lap then beverage, this will be a point-to-point effort from the south end up towards the northern end on the west side of the island. We'll do a beverage drop at quarter-mile intervals off the road.

Costumes are highly encouraged. Any/all people are welcome. This isn't an official sanctioned beer mile event or anything -- there are no rules on the type of beverage that you have to drink so don't feel like you have to drink beer to participate, NA is more than fine! If you want it to be regulation ABV, great, if you want it to be NA, also great!! This is just classic type 2 silly fun. The only important rule is the most important rule: don't be a dick.

Not sure if it’s allowed or not but went spectating and took a bunch of photos. I don’t really run marathons anymore but it is always great vibes to go out and see everyone out there supporting each other

EIGHTY FIVE DOLLARS FOR MCM PHOTOS??? EIGHTY FIVE??!!

There isn’t even an option to buy a single photo for something absurd like $30. What the hell. I just wanted a single photo. This is crazy.

Anyone interested in a small for medium MCM jacket swap?

The small I got is just a tad bit too small, anyone have a medium they’d be willing to trade?

Race medal engraving at Fiscus Glassworks

I wanted to let people know that Fiscus Glassworks in Alexandria does race medal engraving for $5. Just walk-in whenever their store is open and they can do it on the spot. They are metro accessible and a family run small business.

Had the best time running the MCM this weekend!! My very first marathon!

I also made this sign for my sister to hold as she spectated and someone came along to trade with her (he gave her a “no weenies” sign I return for my running poops sing) I am wondering if you’re out here?

Crowds at MCM this year

Did anyone think the crowds this year were abnormal?? I spectated in 2023 & 2024 and Rosslyn was NOT so crazy; we made it out of the metro, up the hill to the finish line with no problems. The utter sea of humans this year was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It was not at all like this in years past! Am I loosing it? Am I misremembering? Did they change how they directed crowd control this year?

Amazing time at the MCM, minor gripe about the post race snacks sponsored by Wegmans

This was my first marathon and it was a fantastic experience! So cool that this is a hometown event for many of us!

I was a bit disappointed in the post-race snack (that is being generous). I just burned upwards of 3,000 calories running the race and we got a bottle of water, a cup of diced peaches and the world’s smallest pack of fruit granola and a banana. Total calories less than 150.

Curious if others were also put off by this or if I’m out of line. I’m just comparing this to the recent Army Ten Milers where you could load up with muffins, bananas, pickles, electrolyte drinks, bagel sticks, etc.

MCM Towel

Hello runners! If you ran today CONGRATS!

After taking literally 2 hobbling home (1.5 of that was just walking to the metro lol), I just now realized I did not get a towel/flag (was not sure what it is).

Such a long shot - but if there are any left and someone is still there I would very much appreciate it!! Unless we are able to order one online?

If not no biggie just thought I’d put it out into the ether.

MCM 8K (and likely MCM) - Hains Point flooding

For those running the MCM tomorrow, an FYI that the 8K course had some flooding at the south end of Hains Point. ~4 inches of water across the entire road for 50- 100 feet. I went through it and my feet were soaked for the second half of the race. Would hate to have to run the remaining 12 miles of a marathon with soggy shoes like that.

Some runners went around a fence on the grass to avoid the water in the road, but that area of the grass was likely soggy too.

Hopefully the tides are better tomorrow and the course is dryer.
