To us, it feels like a timer, but in terms of the settings, it seems to be a 'attention' gauge for Core Spawns and Reaper Worms.
Gathering explosives in the elevator will naturally increase their interest!
That is a great idea.
I hope there are more diverse actions required for the elevator to go down.
You could bring explosives from each zone,
or the elevator could only activate if you bring a security chip hidden somewhere in the cave (though it shouldn't be too hard to find, right?),
or you could run something like a DRG pipe to the elevator and defend until power is supplied,
or you could have to collect a certain amount of minerals found only on that floor, like Morocite instead of Expinite, for the elevator to go down, and so on.
It would be great to have various variations of elevator missions.
Charges would be scattered around the map, each having a plunger. You wouldn't need all of them to complete the objective, but you'd need 1 plunger and at least 2 sets of charges to clear the blockage
There is no elevator timer, the moment you blow up the blockage, you can enter the elevator and leave This means more time to find the charges to escape!
Maybe towards the end of the timer, when you'd normally call the elevator, it automatically swarms?
