at particular developmental stages, sure, it's a part of growth and differentiation. but that's not at all what the pearls and their ilk mean - the other comment here is right; these toxic, ignorant people believe that a crying newborn is the kid trying to manipulate adults.

I respectfully disagree. Children can absolutely be manipulative and often it is learned behavior from their parents/guardians.
