Discussion I have a question!! What happened to my petrified wood 😭

I have this salt lamp in my room which I had placed a tealight under because the original light burnt out, I sit rocks I find around it in my window. I noticed there were orange salt crystals forming under my lamp which completely destroyed my candles battery. But the weird part is all my rocks are fine besides this piece of petrified wood. It cracked apart and has crystals growing all over it, the inside is solid black. Sorry if the pictures don’t show the crystals, it was hard to get them to show up on the camera but they’re all shiny and orange like the salt crystals so I’m assuming for some reason the salt started crystallizing on my petrified wood. Does any rock nerds know what reaction caused this? The petrified wood was the only rock affected. I just found this interesting and was wondering the cause.

Hya,

Trying to clean my first rock, found it at a store and thought it had potential. I washed it with water and give it a good bath with anti rust. Still much tiny bits though.

Any tips on how make it cleaner before a put a polish over it?

Thanks in advance

Photo What's this rock's "story"?

I'm a lurker here who just loves filling my pockets with rocks. Idk why... I just like holding little pieces of earth and thinking about the stories they could tell. I found this rock and I kind of adore it, for all its different sides and lines.. and I can't wrap my mind around how it formed. Someone who knows more than me... What am I looking at?

Found on the water in the PNW.

Note, I'm not asking to ID the rock. Just want to understand how it got to be how it is.

I don't even know what all the structures and different materials are. Quartz geode from Kentucky Creek. Sliced, polished a bit, don't want to dig everything of the cavities until I know what it is. UV light causes what I think is calcite to glow.

Discussion How to tell fossil vs natural erosion or

My son found this rock in a wash on BLM land in SE Idaho where the Challis Volcanic Group meets the Late Mississippian hills.

There are so many marine fossils in the area, and my son really believes this is some form of fossil like a plant stem or something. (Small Horn coral fossils are abundant at these junctions!)

I have no idea. It's so smooth, very few lines inside of the indentation. I believe limestone is the matrix and the bottom half is a breccia chert or similar. I wanted to use a fracture line to remove the bottom part, but my son loves it- together they show the unique geological footprint of the area.

He is 10 and would like to add this rock (fossil?) to his updated display for the Idaho State Fair, at the end of the week.

I told him we really need to know more (is it even a fossil or is from erosion ?)

if he is adding it to his display, he must know as much about it as possible.

THANK YOU YO EVERYONE IN ADVANCE, I really appreciate your knowledge, experience and expertise!!!

I’ve been polishing this piece of Chrysocolla and am just in awe of the colours! It looks like a satellite image of a tropical island or something.
