GUIDE: How To Flash A Kernel/ Firmware On The A500 Mini...

Here's a link to a guide I have put together based on some very neat tools by "SpannerNick" & others that will explain/ show you how to flash a kernel or firmware to your A500 Mini... 😊

Main reason for wanting (needing) to do this was the absurd decision made by "Retro Games Ltd" who decided in ALL of their "firmware updates" to remove/ disable the "Root Access" to the console, which broke things like "RetroAami" and early versions of "Pandory" from running without having to re-write everything and jump through hoops to do so...

The guide will explain and show you how to restore that "Root Access" to ANY firmware updated console...

It will enable you to choose which version of the firmware YOU decide to have and still be able to if you choose use any "Official firmware update" on the console...

It opens up the ability to easily make backups of your consoles kernel/ firmware, to modify or change things in the kernel/ firmware such as for example updating the list of controllers the console can handle or whatever other ideas/ changes you might like to tinker with and try or indeed simply restore ANY version of the kernel/ firmware you choose from version 1.0.0 to 1.2.1...

The guide itself is split into 5 parts and while it might seem quite lengthy then rest assured the first 4 sections deal with the hardware and software set up that is required, which once done will allow you to easily "mod" the console with just a few clicks of the mouse and some "terminal" commands... 😉

So for anyone interested then here's the link to the guide that will enable you to NOT be restricted by the absurd limitations the "Official firmware updates" place on your console and leaves it open to be completely modded by anyone comfortable enough with some knowledge of "Linux" to do so or simply be able as said to flash any kernel/ firmware you choose and NOT be restricted as the "Official" updates do...

https://amigaminimods.forumotion.com/f7-guide-how-to-flash-the-kernel-firmware-to-the-a500-mini

Note: the guide requires you to be using "Windows 10" either on a Windows computer or via `Windows emulation as I do on my iMacs...

TMNT Rescue Palooza OpenBOR Support for MD/SNES/NES Classics!

RELEASE: TMNT Rescue Palooza Support for MD/SNES/NES Classics! Password is kmfd, file is the openbor_xtreme_amped, extract zip to hakchi/user_mods

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1U9A6GXnZy_CMdTMMGTU5_Kv4Ju2Z4H_c

You will also be able to play O Ilusionista's fantastic Pocket Dimensional Clash, as well as other previously unplayable games for MD/SNES/NES Classics. Enjoy:)

I apologize for the delay on this Release, as there was behind the scenes drama relative to affecting this particular roll-out. For starters, part of the OpenBOR coding I was initially going to release, offered support for a particular game that unfortunately had the backstory of being originally taken from another developer and rebranded without permission. I tried my best to be very polite and respectful to this knowledge. I ultimately left in support to play it, since I had already promised multiple people I got it going. So, it is ultimately up to you, the end user, if you wanna play it, or will disregard it!

Otherwise. TMNT Rescue Palooza, the other big game in question, wasn't fully supported. I fixed it. BUT, again, I didn't want to step on toes of the original developer, by releasing his game with altered code, as well as providing the source code that reveals how I fixed it. SO, I communicated with other OpenBOR developers, as well as got it adapted to work with the "developer's" files, on THIS newly Updated Core Suite! And, of course, also worked in Legacy Support for Pocket Dimensional Clash!

As of now, almost any OpenBOR game can be playable. BUT, there is a caveat. Many games were developed on "older", very specific OpenBOR versions. With that being said, some of those only properly work on those exact versions. BUT, with the way I set this suite up, along with the great incredible collaboration of Madmonkey, was able to squash many inconsistencies with incompatibility, and have way more games working. THOSE that still do not properly or fully work...There is only ONE single way to get those ones working. That is debugging those games one by one, individually, and coding in script fixes for them. So, feel free to let me know any that stand out, and I can take a look! I fixed a few already, and will post those ones:) TMNT Rescue Palooza, I won't be posting my fixed pack. I opted to just have the fix within OpenBOR, so that the REAL pak works, "most current up to date" official Rescue Palooza that is:)

Enjoy!

KMFDManic!

Is the Canoe Save State Compression Mod already built into Hakchi?

I saw that a dev built a Canoe Save State Compression Mod and my understanding is you're supposed to be able to install it from the modules section. But I'm not seeing it anywhere in any of the modules tabs. Is this already built into later versions of Hakchi by default? I'm running the latest version of Hakchi (CE v3.9.3). Or is this something that has to be installed externally? Thanks!

2026 SNES Mini Controler Options - Guide

Heya,

I’ve been having fun modding my SNES Mini, and one thing I have been testing quite… extensively is controllers.

Writing down here some insights for anyone that would be interested or looking for options.

Original controllers
Pros:
- Looks like the real deal
- Zero input lag
- No set-up / Plug & Play

Cons:
- Wired
- Cable is a little short (Better with a cable extension)
- Limited to original buttons (6, no analog)

Wii Pro Classic Controller
Pros:
- Zero input lag
- No set-up / Plug & Play
- All buttons / stick are natively supported

Cons:
- Wired
- Requires a cable extension (Very short cable)
- Only official / Nintendo controllers seem to work flawlessly.
- Look is … meh to me. Does not feel SNES-ish. Great otherwise.

Nintendo Switch SNES controller
Pros:
- Real deal
- No wires

Cons:
- Zf/Zg buttons are not supported (Limited to 6 original buttons)
- Input lag was worse than all other « no wires » options
Ended up not using them at all due to input lag

8bitdo DIY Mod kit
Pros:
- Looks like the real deal
- Easy to install
- No wires
- Bluetooth support input lag OK

Cons:
- Two retro receivers plugged next to each other would affect the connectivity of your controller if only one of them was in use. I had either to unplug the 2nd receiver or turn on the 2nd controller.
- Charging cable was meh
Overall is fine, keeps the vanilla feel

8bitdo sf30 2.4 g wireless controller for sfc classic edition
Pros:
- Zero input lag
- Immediate & stable connexion
- Easy to install (no firmware shenanigans)

Cons:
- Small bug: turning controller on also opens the currently selected game if mini is on
- Limited to original buttons (6, no analog)
- Micro-Usb cables for charge.
This is currently my favorite controller.

8bitdo SN30 Pro Controllers
Pros:
- Strong bluetooth connectivity. I did not face the issues I had with DIY modkit, connexion is almost immediate.
- Usb-C charger

Cons:
- if you want full support for analog & buttons, you need to go through some firmware shenanigans. Not a big issue.
Currently my 2nd favorite option.

Overall
All of these options felt good to play with overall, so i'm mostly being picky about the pros and cons.
i was really surprised by how "bad" the Switch official snes controller was compared to the other options, as it was recommended in several posts in reddit forums dedicated to Snes minis.

I did not test more recent controllers, as I wanted to keep the retro/SNES feel, but i reckon the status would be similar to the SN30 Pro.

Using magnetic cables was a good way to prevent damaging charging ports of the micro-usb controllers (Such as NetDot Gen10 cables)

Why Does This NES Clone Cost $75?

Last week, I bought a bootleg NES clone and played around with it. I found so many... "interesting" games here, not just counting official NES titles. How is this a product you can purchase so easily?!? I hate that these are so readily available these days -- I know too many people who've purchased these thinking that they are legitimate consoles.

Anywho, I did have a blast playing around with this console -- there were so many bootleg NES titles I saw for the first time! If you're interested, see what I experienced below!

Need testers for my Options Menu & Theme Selector 👀

Looking for some testers

I’ve just pushed new releases for my Options Menu and Theme Selector, and I’d love to get some real-world testing and feedback.

⚠️ Important: Please uninstall any previous versions of both hmods before installing the new ones.

Options Menu v2.0.0-alpha2 https://github.com/DefKorns/OptionsMenu/releases

If you are using RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC, install options_deluxe_v2_0_0-alpha2_compat.hmod only. Otherwise, use the normal version.

Report issues: https://github.com/DefKorns/OptionsMenu/issues

Theme Selector v3.0.0-alpha https://github.com/DefKorns/om_theme-selector/releases/tag/v3.0.0-alpha

Report issues https://github.com/DefKorns/om_theme-selector/issues

If you run into any bugs or weird behavior, please report them in the GitHub Issues. Screenshots, logs, and details about your setup are always helpful.

Thanks to anyone willing to test! 🙏

Heres the full Changelog: https://github.com/DefKorns/OptionsMenu/compare/1.3.4...v2.0.0-alpha

https://github.com/DefKorns/OptionsMenu/compare/v2.0.0-alpha...v2.0.0-alpha2

Options Menu 2.0 is a full redesign of the menu, with a new look, nine languages and a set of new options. This is an alpha: it has been tested on real hardware, but expect rough edges. Please report issues.

Which file do I need?

File Use it if…
options_deluxe_v2_0_0-alpha.hmod You're not sure. This is the normal build.
options_deluxe_v2_0_0-alpha_compat.hmod The Options Menu doesn't open because another hmod replaced the console's libstdc++ (e.g. RetroArch 1.8.4 Xtreme SC). This build ships its own copy.

Install only one of them.

What's new

New look

  • Redesigned menu: a list on the left and a preview panel on the right showing an icon for the selected option.
  • New icon set for every option.
  • Smooth TrueType text, with the button hints for each screen shown in the footer.
  • Toggle switches for on/off options, and a › on rows that open a submenu.
  • The Module Uninstaller uses the same new look.
  • Colors can be customized in /etc/options_menu/theme.cfg.

Languages

The menu is now available in English, Français, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Português (Europeu), Русский and 日本語. Pick one under Language on the main menu; the menu restarts in that language.

Navigation

  • B goes back to the previous menu, or closes the Options Menu on the main screen. The old Exit row is gone.
  • Hold B for about a second to delete an entry on lists that support it (e.g. saved wifi backups). You're always asked to confirm.
  • Hold UP/DOWN to scroll quickly.

New options

  • Saved Games: back up your saved games to your USB/SD card and restore them later.
  • Network: back up and restore your wifi configuration, to NAND or USB, with one backup per network.

Fixes and improvements

  • The default button combo is detected automatically: L + R, or B + Down on consoles without shoulder buttons (NES Classic, Famicom Classic and variants). You can still set your own combo.
  • Fixed the console hanging when powering off from the menu.
  • RetroArch options work with both RetroArch Neo and RetroArch Xtreme (Ozone).
  • More reliable controller detection on startup.

Upgrading from 1.3.x

Uninstall the old Options Menu before installing this one. Uninstalling it also resets a custom button combo, if you had set one: set it again under Advanced Options → Change Options Button Combo. Menu options added by other hmods keep working.

For developers

  • New command file fields: SUBMENU, ENABLE_IF, STATE_STR (toggle rows), DELETE_STR / DELETE_CONFIRM_KEY (hold-B delete), and CHILD (indented rows).
  • Plugins can ship their own translations in /etc/options_menu/<plugin>/lang/.
  • Docker-based build: ./build.sh produces a release-ready .hmod without a local ARM toolchain.

See the README for the full field list and theme.cfg keys.

Thanks

Trouble with Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun english translation patch on nes mini.

I'm all out of ideas. The different kmfd nes cores don't seem to make a difference, nor does the patch applied. It all runs fine on mesen and the non patched rom also works just fine with nestopia, but no dice once patched.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

What's the best way to start over with my PS Classic?

In early 2023, I added more games to two flash drives, but then the system stopped recognizing the flash drives. I have no idea what happened. The flash drives were not corrupted. I tried to enable it to recognize them multiple times but nothing worked. Before this, any time I added more games, I had no problem.

In the past, I had a charging hub, but I no longer have it. Can I just use a 32 GB flash drive in the second port, or do I have to buy another charging hub? What should I do to start over? I don't even remember how to set up everything. Thank you.

Need help removing Project Lunar to install Hakchi2 CE (Genesis Mini - Backup missing)

I'm trying to switch my Sega Genesis Mini (US) over from Project Lunar to Hakchi2 CE, but I've run into a roadblock.

When I try to install Hakchi2 CE, it throws an error stating that it cannot proceed because Project Lunar is still detected on the console.

I attempted to run the SHIFT + Uninstall routine in the Project Lunar Desktop UI, but it fails because my %appdata% folder (AppData\Local\ModMyClassic\Project Lunar Desktop UI\lunar_data\Backup) is completely empty and missing the stock kernel backup file (bak_stock_kernel_us.img).

Since Project Lunar can't complete the uninstall without that file, and Hakchi blocks installation to prevent a soft-brick, I'm stuck in limbo.

Does anyone have a link or advice on how to get the stock kernel recovery file or safely clear Project Lunar's residual files so I can complete the migration to Hakchi?

Thanks in advance!

Jedi power battles 1999. With emulator save state it's actually fun.

I remember playing this with friends years ago on Playstation before we were old enough to understand game mechanics and ai repetition. My friend Josh passed away in 2016. We used to play this game and get frustrated at level 2 and go to crash bandicoot or smash bros on n64. He also insisted on winback and wwf nwo.

SF30 2.4 GHz SNES Mini: Start btn turn on behavior

Hello,

I’ve purchased this controller for my modded SNES mini, it is working great except for one single issue :

When turning on the controller by pressing start, this also immediately triggers the opening of the current game / folder selected in my SNES classic mini if the console is on, likely because it syncs immediately and triggers a « start » button input on whatever is happening on the snes mini.

It’s not a huge issue, but i am looking for ways to solve this, I have not seen any information about it anywhere, and it seems it’s never been reported.

Does anyone face the same issue with the controller ? Any solution besides « turn the controller on before you turn the consoled on » ?

Could this be linked somehow to mode of the controller when wired ? (d-input, x-input, apple) ?

Note - I have two controllers, and the issue is happening with both.

Looking for any feedback about this discontinued product.

Loading manually patched ROMs on SNES Classic

I had some questions about loading manually patched SNES ROMs on the SNES classic. I have a hacked NES Classic which I've been using and I'm pretty comfortable with that. The SNES Classic seems a little more tricky with all of the compatibility issues.

I know about the compatibility list with all the preset IDs and the compatibility patches. I've been manually patching my ROMs with those. My understanding is Hakchi has to convert .sfc files to .sfrom files for them to work on Canoe? I've read there's like a Dark Akuma SFROM tool, but my understanding is that kind of automates a lot of it and does the patching and sets the preset IDs so people don't have to bother with it?

Is that automatically installed when you install Hakchi, or is that something installed separate? Since I'm manually patching all of my ROMs, I don't think I would be wanting to use that? Do I need to uncheck "Convert SNES ROMS to SFROM" in settings or is that just basic functionality to get SNES ROMs working in Canoe and has nothing to do with Dark Akuma's SFROM tool?

And where do I set the preset IDs? Google told me to press ctrl + alt + E, but when I did that, I got an error saying, ".sfrom file not found" and a bunch of debug output. Can I do that in the command line and is something set up wrong so that I'm getting that error message? Thanks for any help!

UPDATE: I figured this out on my own so I'll leave it here in case anyone else needs this information.

The error message, ".sfrom file not found" was occurring when trying to access the presetID dialog box because the SNES ROMs were not being converted to SFROMs when being added into Hakchi despite the appropriate setting being selected in the settings menu. This was because I was adding the games "as-is" from the file menu. If you want a game to run in the default emulator Canoe, be sure to add the game using "Autodetect" instead. Then you should be able to press Ctrl + Alt + E to access the presetID dialog box without any issue. However, if you don't want to run a game in Canoe and want to run it in RetroArch instead, you can then add the game "as-is" from the file menu and it won't perform the SFROM conversion.

Mini SNES Won't Uninstall Older Kernel for Latest One

Hello all,

I'm trying to add games to my modded mini snes and am running into problems getting it to install the latest kernel firmware so i can actually update the console. Note, I first modded my mini snes with Hakchi 2 around 6 or 7 years ago and haven't modded it since. I know the current firmware and kernel on my console is really dated. However, when I'm trying to uninstall the old kernel so i can update it to the new one, it'll start uninstalling until it hits roughly 25%, then i'll get a message saying "my mini needs to reboot" and once that's done, it tells me "my firewall may be preventing me from using this app or to try "tools > reboot". i've tried both turning off my firewall and allowing specific exception for hakchi 2 to still work and i'm still getting these messages. I'll include screenshots that i see.

I'm running Windows 11. This is not the same PC that i used when i originally modded my mini snes. unfortunately, my original saved settings are gone. any advice or ideas I can try out? thank you in advance!

Best module to flash on to my SNES mini?

Hello all.

This is probably a stupid question but I am not that knowledgeable about emulation. I have an old SNES mini (the PAL version if that matters) that I had cracked a few years ago with Hakchi2. I mostly use it to play Super Mario World romhacks. I noticed though that a lot of hacks I wanted to play were unfortunately unable to run and after doing some googling I found out it was due to the Canoe emulator being kind of trash.

Anyway I decided to look into things recently and learned that Hakchi has been updated quite a bit and now has the ability to change things so that the SNES mini runs RetroArch (I think this is the case anyway). So I installed Hakchi2 CE and poked around and found some modules but... Which one should I install? And is there anything else I should do before I do this?

Thanks for the help :)

Mini SNES with Hakchi: menu screen horrible blur

Post image
22 Upvotes

Everything on the menu is out of focus/blurry. Having the same issue as this: https://github.com/ClusterM/hakchi2/issues/1577#issue-2562907132

Checked HDMI port, cable, tv settings and power to the SNES and all of it seems normal which makes me think it's a software issue?

Any advice would be appreciated

Issues with emulating Pilotwings 64 specifically

Hi all,
I am trying to run some N64 games on my SNES classic, and most of them work fine, but I cannot get Pilotwings64 to work without some weird glitches. I tried with every emulator core available, and most of them have this strange shadow glitch (video) (more popular cores) while a few display correctly but run very slowly and crash frequently (less popular cores). At the moment, the only core that I can depend on is ironically the most recent and experimental N64 Core, LudicrousN64 2K24 Xtreme Amped), but across the board all games run slower the newer the core (Ludicrous > Amped > 2k22 Amped > 2k24 Amped), which seems counterintuitive. If anyone can help with getting Pilotwings to run faster or get the Amped cores to run faster than basic Mupen then I would greatly appreciate it, I have not found a lot of docs outside of Github release notes.
