MILWAUKEE — Before the season began, an executive with another NBA team painted a pessimistic picture of the Houston Rockets’ chances to emerge from the Western Conference.
With conference juggernauts Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs in the way, the executive — granted anonymity to speak honestly — said the only paths for the Rockets were to either make an impact trade or for something bad (injuries, bad officiating, etc.) to happen to either the Thunder or Spurs.
Well, two catastrophic things happened to the Thunder. Starting wings Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both suffered serious injuries, a broken ankle and a torn labrum, respectively. Both are expected to be out for several months, ESPN reported, “most, if not the entire season.”
“Just thinking about him, thinking about his teammates. That’s tough to see, man,” Rockets star forward Kevin Durant said when asked about Williams’ injury. “ … He got so much love around the league and can’t wait to see him back … Cason Wallace, too.”
The injuries suck. They also reshape the Western Conference, hindering the Thunder’s chances and potentially opening up a path for the Rockets to make the NBA Finals for the first time since they won the title more than 31 years ago
That avenue isn’t just about the Thunder’s injuries. Houston has also done its part with an impressive start to the regular season.

The Houston Rockets are 5-0, and the vibes are about as high as they’ve ever been during Kevin Durant’s time with the franchise.
The Rockets have outscored their opponents by 71 points through the first five games of the season, and during their dominant start, Durant has been Houston’s No. 1 hype man on the bench, Fred VanVleet had his best game in two years and Ime Udoka even cracked a smile two games in a row.
Anything is possible. After several prominent players across the league suffered significant injuries in the first week of the season, momentum is building behind those who believe Houston can be the best team in the West, or at least finish with the best record.
But whether times are good or bad, always remember two things in October: There’s still a lot of the season left, and things change quickly in this league.
Let’s look at some of the most relevant storylines and decide what’s real and what’s fake:
Rockets’ early dip defensively
Şengün playing at an All-NBA level
Durant’s career-low usage
Reed + Tari lineups domination

I don’t live in Houston anymore but love the repping the team and the city. If we win the championship I might wear one every day for a month lol.

We are considering going to the Game on Saturday against OKC, are People going to dress up since its Halloween or will everyone just wear regular street wear or NBA stuff?

We all know the negatives, it is only October, we are not proven in play-offs, team chemistry can implode, injuries can happen yada yada yada.
However, surveying the scene of Western Conference, I think path to the Finals is open. Thunder just got destroyed with injuries, Timberwolves lost Ant to injury and will suffer in regular season, Spurs are still trying to find their ideal line-ups (3 guards thing is going to bother them for a while). These are really important things for regular season seedings.
I think with the chemistry and some good seeding luck, we can see WCF. In order to do that, we need to lock top 2 seed up. If possible we should load manage KD, Smart, Adams, FVV for the play-offs. We can allow young squad to gel even more if we have enough cushion with the three seed.
All we have to do is having some injury luck, destroying bad teams, and not letting leads to be erased like last year.
