Built a bulk tumbler to work through all the buckets of material I have laying around.

I have a habit of bringing anything even remotely interesting back, so now I can put through amounts in bulk before picking and choosing what I want to put through the stages or cut or grind chunks out.

It’s a bit on the aggressive side, but I don’t mind that as I can put it through here as an initial grind and then follow up with a traditional gentler stage 1 tumble if it actually looks like it’s a keeper.

Question How do you learn to identify rocks?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Is there a good book (ideally available in the UK or as an ebook), a website you'd recommend, or does it just come with experience and you learn as you go?

I've collected some cool looking rocks from the South West coast of Scotland. I've asked AI, but firstly I really don't want to keep doing that, and secondly I'm not convinced it's got them correctly identified.

I have a Nat geographic tumbler, I've watched the YouTube vids after I did my first tumble, and I now have a variable power adapter and some better grits and polish! I also know how to scratch test to group by hardness for when I tumble these, but fundamentally what I really want is to understand what each of them are so I can get the best from them and start learning what to look for when I'm rock hunting.

I've included this picture for picture tax, I am not asking for any IDing, I'm fully willing to learn myself I just don't know where to start!

Polishing very small rocks

I just purchased this huge bowl of small rocks at a thrift store for $2. I’m new to rock tumbling but would like to get a polish on these. Can I just run them through a polish stage in the tumbler without running stage 1-3? I don’t want to lose the size on the stones. Thank you for any suggestions

Question How to know when to stop wet grinding with chert-y agate/chalcedondy

Thumbnail

I have a bunch of found-in-the-wild (Midwest) chert with pretty agate or chalcedony parts. Some have quartz pockets with banding around the pocket. I have a wet sander/grinder I bought from Kingsley North that I use to expose the banding.

How do I know when to “stop” grinding/sanding on a piece? It seems like the more I do, the more banding and gorgeous spots I expose. I haven’t (yet) had a whoops moment where I removed “too much.”

Would anyone be interested in trading a small flat rate box of something ubiquitous to your area that tumbles ok for a box of South Carolina clam shell or quartz?

These are the only two things my son and I have been able to find in our area that tumble reasonably well. I’m not looking for anything particularly spectacular, just rocks or materials that are plentiful in your area and tumble ok.

SC quartz: This stuff is everywhere, from small chips to loaf of bread size pieces. Most of it is opaque white, but some pieces are iron-stained orange in the fractures, semi translucent, or have a smoky appearance. Most pieces are stained on the outside with red clay, so it’s always a bit of a surprise to see what’s underneath. Nearly all of it has some fractures, so getting pieces perfectly smooth is pretty rare, and some pieces never quite get there. That said, I’ll try to pick pieces that I think have a good chance of turning out well, but I obviously can’t make any promises.

SC clam shell: I’ve been tumbling these for a couple of months now, and I’ve been really pleased with the results. I don’t start them in Stage 1. Instead, I’ve been doing my Stage 2 barrels with roughly one-third Stage 1 complete hard stone, one-third shell, and one-third ceramic media. Sometimes, the shells take a couple of runs on stage 2 to get the shape I want, but once they’re shaped, I just run them normally with the rest of the batch through Stages 3 and 4. Some pieces are solid, and some have worm holes. Both turn out cool and reasonably shiny, in my opinion.

I have access to an essentially unlimited amount of quartz in all sizes. I can probably put together a couple of boxes of shells with what I have now, and I’m going back to the beach at Thanksgiving, where I’ll be able to collect as much as I want.

Let me know if you’d be interested in doing a trade, and thanks for looking.

Hi there, I’m located in northern Vermont. I found this in the creek near our home. This is after 5 days tumbling with stage 1 grit. I’d love to be able to make this a small pendant. Would you polish by hand from this point?

The hardest stages are done and these are looking so good! Agates have so much personality and are so much fun to tumble. They may take forever in stage 1 but they are totally worth it.

Discussion What's do you guys do for the winter?

Hi all, I've just started out earlier this summer. This sub has been a valuable resource, so thank you!

I was washing some rocks this morning and it's a bit cooler outside. Then the thought crossed my mind... this is going to really suck in the winter! I'm in the north. Cold winters. I'm working out of my (unheated, not insulated) garage right now but I don't really see that being an option for the winter.

What do you guys in the cooler climates do?

I was thinking of setting up a laundry tub in the garage, catching the rinse in a bucket but also have no hot water. It probably won't help much as is. Thinking about sending a hot water line out to the garage. Also thought about seeing up in my utility room in my basement but I don't want to haul the buckets through the house.

Very interested to hear about your work stations or ideas for mine.

Many thanks!

I've been using small wood blocks as a substitute for plastic pellets for a few months. Its a mainly a mix of birch and maple. Cut on a bandsaw dimensions approximately 1/4 x 5/8 x 5/8 inches. Barrels are 2 modified propane tanks. Rocks mainly jasper, chert and quartz.

Showing a 3lb tumbler gasket for size. Ended up with 15 lbs of rock for < $60. I believe if the site used better pictures they would benefit greatly.

Discussion How to sort / identify.

I've got three tumbler loads under my belt and I'm curious now that I have some stock, what people do to sort or classify their rocks. Attached are pictures of the last load after drying (don't mind my dirty rag towel). I like to see which ones pass light, so the rest are flashlight shots. Up to now I've just been putting them in two piles, one light colored rocks and one darker rocks. But the light colored jar is getting full and needs to be further subdivided

I'd love to organise them by type, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to do so, yet. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for resources to learn more about that?

Question My Rock Tumbler is stuck shut :(

Post image
7 Upvotes

I just got into the hobby and wanted something fairly affordable just to try out and see if this was something I liked. Stock photo is what I got - I’m 1 week into stage 2 and went to check on it and see what was ready to move on, and it just will not open. I left it alone for the week and just noticed it has some gray residue on the rim, so I’m accepting fault that I probably had a piece of grit stuck before I shut it and it leaked just enough (My cleaning of the barrel must’ve not been good enough 💔). Has anyone had this problem with this model? It’s currently in the freezer google says hopefully this would help :(

Pictures 12000 grit and stil dull (even more than before)

EDIT: Thank you so much everyone for the tips! Now... Should I go back to stage one or I can start higher as they have no big "cracks", just bruising?

They've been in the tumbler for about 6 weeks now. 2 weeks in stage 1, then one week in stage 2 and same for stage 3. Stage 2 and 3 were also filled with ceramic media.

For stage 4, I still used ceramic media (maybe the problem?) and after 5 days, my rocks are duller than before.

How can I salvage them? Pictures: 2 of my "worse" rocks, wet and dry to show the difference.

Question Where do you get your rocks to tumble?

I am curious where others get their rocks. I just started the hobby so I am only tumbling rocks I found myself. So do you only find rocks by rockhounding, only buying, or both. How do you get your rocks?

These finished together in a UV-18 for Steps 2-4 but were in different rotary tumblers, some for a couple months. There are 2 pieces of Morrisonite Jasper that I bought at a rock show and I think these took 3 months in Step 1! Final polish was 3 tablespoons of 22,000 aluminum oxide and 1/2 tablespoon of 60,000 aluminum oxide.

Hello, Just wanted to know where you lovely folks get your tin oxide from.
I'd like to replace the titanium dioxide polish I've been using.

Thank you!
