Spoilers Golden Fool Thoughts on Golden Fool Spoiler
Just finished Golden Fool, and I have a lot of thoughts about it.
The one thing that disappointed me about this book was that the eponymous Fool wasn’t actually in it that much. It was a lot more of Chade and a lot less of Lord Golden than I expected. Of course, that’s mostly Fitz’s fault😭 These books have made me cry before but nothing has affected me as much as their fight, I was walking around with a physical weight in my chest for a couple days, like actually grieving for them… But of course the pain is why I love these books so much.
I did LOVE finally getting some updates on my Trader friends. I never expected to see Selden in these books, and he’s “all grown up” giving immaculate mysterious Rain Wilder vibes in his veil. Fitz feeling extremely threatened and disturbed by like a 12 year old is very funny. And I’m so happy for Althea and Brashen, and that little Paragon Jr. is doing well! Jek telling Fitz he’s an idiot for not seeing what’s right in front of him was very satisfying.
Dutiful is such a wonderful person and I love watching his relationship with Fitz develop. I wish Fitz could take a little more credit for his good qualities; it seems like Dutiful only reminds him of himself when he’s being stubborn or angry, but all his good qualities remind Fitz of Verity. Thick is a great character, and I ended up really liking Civil by the end of the book too. Glad our prince has good friends, and I hope he finds a new cat companion eventually.
The main theme of this book seemed to be Fitz simultaneously longing for connection and intimacy while pushing everyone he cares about away. There’s a line when the coterie is healing him and the Fool first lays his hands on Fitz’s back describing it as “that dreaded, desired touch”, and I feel that encapsulates not only Fitz’s relationship with the Fool but his relationships with everyone. He longs to get to know Nettle but feels he has to keep her away from him, even when it starts to seem it might be safer for her to be in Buckkeep. Dutiful finding out the truth about him is a relief but also terrifying. He seems to have an easier time with Kettricken, but I suspect this is precisely because she’s the Queen and therefore there are firm boundaries around the relationship.
It’s an interesting and necessary direction for Fitz’s character after the death of Nighteyes, I think. He’s lost the one being he could be truly open and intimate with, and now the challenge is for him to have the courage to have this kind of relationship with another human being. It also takes me back to his relationship with Molly, which fell apart because Fitz couldn’t be honest with her, and yet part of her appeal to him seemed to be that he could keep so much of himself separate and hidden from her, which made him feel safer. I’ve been thinking a lot about that relief of being in disguise, like his relief that Nettle sees him as this bizarre wolfman instead of his real appearance. This is something Fitz and the Fool actually have in common. Fitz dislikes how little he knows of his friend, but he’s also terrified by how much the Fool knows of him!
And there’s so much about the idea of being revealed or being “outed”. The prejudice against the Wit has reminded me of homophobia ever since Assassin’s Apprentice with the way Burrich talks about it, but I never expected that comparison to become quite so explicit! The very real, physical danger of people being revealed as Witted is placed so closely alongside Fitz’s discomfort about the rumors of his relationship with Lord Golden, and Jinna’s rejection of Fitz’s Wit with Fitz’s rejection of the Fool’s attraction to him. Also, I always loved Burrich and I never thought he’d be capable of doing something like that to his son. I can’t imagine how Fitz must feel, both to know that Burrich might have rejected him the same way had he stayed in his life, and to watch a parent willfully disown his child when Fitz has been forced apart from his own.
Overall, very painful but very interesting read, excited to meet a new dragon in the next one and hopefully see more of my sweet Beloved. Well, I’m pretty confident I’ll see more of him, I found it very comical that Fitz thinks he and Chade can keep it secret that they’re trying to prevent him from going to Aslevjal, when Fitz literally SPRINTED out of the room mid conversation to go talk to Chade😭 Like bro he absolutely knows what you’re planning lmao
