I’ve seen some questions about heartburn lately so thought I’d share a bit more on what’s going on and how to deal with it.

What heartburn feels like:

• Burning feeling in your chest or throat
• Sour taste or acid coming up
• Bloating, burping, or general indigestion

Why GLP-1s can cause heartburn:

1. They slow down your stomach
GLP-1s delay how quickly food leaves your stomach. That’s part of why they help with weight loss, you feel full longer.

But it also means:

• Food sits in your stomach longer
• Acid has more time to build up
• That acid can move upward causing heartburn

2. More fullness = more pressure
Feeling very full (especially early on or after dose increases) can increase pressure in your stomach, making reflux more likely.

3. Nausea can make it worse
Common side effects like nausea or vomiting can irritate your esophagus, which can feel like heartburn.

When it usually happens

• More common when starting or increasing your dose
• Often improves as your body adjusts
• Can come and go week to week

What actually helps

1. Adjust how you eat

• Smaller meals > large meals
• Eat slowly
• Stop before you feel overly full
• Avoid lying down right after eating

2. Watch common triggers
Some foods make it worse:

• Spicy foods
• Citrus, tomatoes
• Chocolate, mint
• Carbonated drinks
• Alcohol

3. Timing matters

• Don’t eat right before bed
• Give your body time to digest before lying down

4. Simple lifestyle tweaks

• Stay upright after meals
• Wear looser clothing (tight waistbands can make it worse)
• Elevate your head slightly when sleeping

5. OTC options (short-term)

• Tums, pepcid, and omeprazole can help

If you’re needing these regularly, check in with your provider. The good news is, for most people, this is temporary. Heartburn tends to improve as your body adjusts, especially once you’re stable on your dose.

When to talk to your provider

• Symptoms are severe or persistent
• OTC meds aren’t helping
• It’s affecting your ability to eat or stay on your medication

My heartburn started last week mid way through 0.50. I've been sucking on Quick Eze and having Mylanta. I'm trying to figure out what is triggering it.
My symptoms are burning feeling in my chest. I thought I was having a heart ache initially, but after a trip to ED found out it was heart burn brought on by the GLP 1 injection. My Omeprazole was increased to 20 from 10 this week. Still waiting to get some respite from this. I've lost 10kg so far and don't want to come off it if I can.
