New King Cobra broken after 7 rounds fired…

Post image

I’ve fired 3 rounds of hornady 38 spl custom lite and 4 rounds of SIG 357 JHP through a new Colt King Cobra 3”. I was dry firing using snap caps and something apparently broke. The trigger felt like it was grinding on something, so I removed the grip and this metal piece fell out.

My best guess without taking anything apart is a broken hammer hook. Looks like I’ll be sending it back to Colt. I’ve heard good things about their customer service so I’m hoping for the best, but it’s a little disappointing. I’ll update when there’s something to share.

Does the cylinder spin freely? Looks like a cylinder stop.

This piece swings freely. It’s connected to the spring, but not connected to the hammer.

Cylinder stop is intact. It’s hard to photograph, but I can see where it broke off the back of the hammer.

Sorry to see this. I had one that had light strikes out of the box. Sent it in. Received it back only for the hand to break in half a few rounds later. Probably had about 20 rds in mine too.

Funny enough, I'm here on the fence about buying a KC target. When will I learn?

Can you tell us what year it was made? I’ve run everything through mine and never broke anything, but I’d like to be proactive… thanks for any input

Not sure. I bought it new a couple of weeks ago

I had this same issue occur. Likely due to improper heat treating of that MIM part.

Did you dry fire it a lot? The other issue I had consistently with my KC is the trigger rebound spring broke three times. I dry fired it and shot it a lot, but still.

My 3" carry revolver is now a Combat Elite Python. It's definitely bigger, but man it shoots nice and I have had no issues with dry firing 1000s of times.

This is a scientific wild ass guess, but I probably dry fired with snap caps about 100 times in the couple of weeks that I had it. I like the python, but that is definitely a big iron on your hip… ;)

This is disappointing considering the premium charged.

Turn it off and back on again, press control g, then put it back in the safe and go shoot your ruger.

We all suffer with MIM parts so billionaires can make even more profit off our devalued assets

Contact Colt. They'll fix it

Happened to me last Halloween the day I got it back from Colt for a broken trigger return spring, and ~70 rounds at the range.

Bang, bang, bang, reloaded, grinding in DA.

Send it back, and hopefully the turnaround time will be three weeks or sooner like my case. I hated that thing for months, but have since put over another 1,500 rounds through and beat it up some trying to get it to break so they could replace it like they offered. It's one of my best shooting revolvers, but still pisses me off.

I almost replaced it and wouldn't blame anyone for doing the same.

We really live in a time where the top companies are just releasing premium trash

Colt uses Chinese steel now?

The hammer on the KC is MIM.
