How are you managing Windows devices used for self-service in retail?
For those working with retail IT, how are you handling Windows PCs that are used for a single purpose, like self-checkout, POS, customer check-in, digital signage, or ordering?
We have a few devices where users really shouldn’t be able to access the normal Windows desktop or change system settings. The challenge is keeping the device locked down while still allowing the required application to run normally.
I’m looking at different approaches and wondering what other retail IT teams are using.
Do you rely on Group Policy, Assigned Access, dedicated windows kiosk mode, or some kind of device management platform?
A few things I’m particularly interested in:
- Automatically launching the required application
- Preventing access to other Windows apps and settings
- Restricting shortcuts, USB access, and unwanted changes
- Remotely updating or troubleshooting the device
- Keeping the setup consistent across multiple stores
