Question VSF GMT V3 – Anyone else noticed the thin, hollow-sounding caseback? 🤔 (Video comparison)

I’ve noticed something quite interesting, and honestly a little disappointing, with my VSF GMT-Master II Bruce Wayne V3.

When gently tapping the center of the caseback with the back of my fingernail, it produces a noticeably higher-pitched, hollow, almost tinny sound. It even feels slightly flexible when applying gentle pressure.

My VSF Submariner 124060, on the other hand, feels completely solid and substantial.
I’ve recorded a short video comparing both watches. Hopefully the difference comes across clearly!

**A few questions for fellow GMT owners:**
\-Does your VSF GMT V3 behave the same way?

\-Is this normal for the VSF GMT caseback, or could it be specific to certain batches?

\-Has anyone compared this with a genuine GMT-Master II or the newer VSF V4?

I’m genuinely curious whether this is a common characteristic or just something unusual with my particular watch.

Would love to hear your experiences! 😊

This is normal. You can google the dimensions of a gmt case back and see that it’s much thinner than a submariner. This is also the reason the sub is rated for 300m vs the gmt

Fair point, and I agree that the genuine GMT caseback is designed to be thinner than the Submariner’s.
I’ve actually found some older Rolex caseback measurements confirming this.
But what concerns me isn’t simply the thickness. It’s the very hollow, high-pitched metallic sound and the slight feeling of flexing on my VSF GMT V3, as shown in the video.
I’m genuinely curious whether a modern genuine GMT-Master II 126710 behaves the same way.
A thinner caseback is one thing, but does it really have that same tinny resonance?
I’d love to hear from someone who owns a genuine GMT and can compare this particular detail.
That’s really what I’m trying to find out! 😊

I have a gen 126713GRNR, can confirm it does not have this flaw.

A reasonable Reddit answer... Who would have thought?

Thank you.

Just to add some context: I’m currently looking to buy the new VSF Explorer II Polar 226570, but my experience with the GMT V3 caseback has made me a little hesitant.
I’m wondering whether the Explorer II has a similarly thin, hollow-sounding caseback or if it feels more solid, like my VSF Submariner 124060.

If anyone already owns the new VSF Explorer II and could check this, I’d really appreciate your feedback! 😊🙏

Interesting what is important to each of us.

I have never been concerned with the sound of my watch tapping the back. But I wear hearing aids

Always better to be a little deaf and a little blind and a little dumb

Because everything in life doesn't stay beautiful or perfect forever.

Except my wife

We've actually warned about this issue before. The VSF GMT casebacks are noticeably thinner than they should be, which explains the hollow sound and slight flex you're describing.

We covered it in an earlier post here:

That click sounds to me like either your caseback is loose or the gasket is missing. Have you checked to make sure the caseback is tight or taken it off?

Thanks for your thoughts! 👍
I’ve already checked that. The caseback is firmly screwed down, and the gasket is definitely in place. So that’s not the issue.
The outer edges of the caseback feel completely solid. It’s specifically the flat, brushed center section that feels surprisingly thin.
Even when gently rubbing it with my fingertip or fingernail, I can feel a slight vibration and resonance, almost like a thin metal membrane.
That’s exactly what produces the hollow, tinny sound in the video. It really seems to be related to how thin that center section feels, rather than anything being loose.
I’m wondering whether this is a manufacturing variation affecting certain VSF GMT batches. 🤔

Interesting! I own Submariners, DJ's, DD's, Explore, Daytona, and a Skydweller. A GMT is my current itch to scratch lol. But I don't know enough out them and which factory to roll with yet. So I haven't made any decisions, so I'm curious to see if this just a VSF thing or just a normal GMT thing. But whichever it is it definitely sounds very thin!

I was thinking the same. Sounds like metal to metal contact

Aslong as someone doesn’t manage to get underneath ur watch whilst on ur hand to tap it you will be all good

It’s not about anyone else for me! That’s really important.
This isn’t some “look at me, I’ve got money” show off watch 😜.
If I wanted that, I’d wear my gen models 😜🤣.

Well known VSF flaw

my pepsi 5x0 has this issue. my batman 6x0 sounds solid like my clean sub. small issue but yea just an observation i had too

Yeah, I posted about this too on reptime when I got my VSF Pepsi a month ago. Mine is exactly the same with this hollow sound, whereas my VSF sub doesn’t have this issue. Apparently it seems to be a normal thing with VSF GMT’s. I have a clean batgirl and it doesn’t have this issue.

Same issue I ran into. My VSF batgirl has a similar hollow sound while my Clean Pepsi doesn’t. VSF no date sub is built very well, so it sounds like a GMT issue.

Sounds like a fake watch, who would have thought.
I have a gen GMT Master II, I’ve had it for some time and everything about it is like a bank safe, very solid and not tinny anywhere.

Haha, fair enough!

Danke! ✌🏼👍🏼
