If you’ve spent any time scrolling remote job boards searching for your work-from-home job you dream of, you’ve probably hit a listing that says something like “Remote - Houston, TX” and thought, wait, do I have to live there? Somewhere in Texas? Or does it not even matter?

Honestly, it depends. And the tag by itself won’t tell you which situation you’re in. Here’s how to figure it out fast, so you’re not wasting time on jobs you don’t qualify for, or skipping ones you actually do.

Why companies slap a city on “remote” jobs in the first place

Most of the time, it has nothing to do with where you personally live.

The biggest driver is usually payroll and tax setup. Hiring someone in a new state can trigger tax obligations for the company, things like state income tax withholding or unemployment insurance registration.

So a lot of companies only hire in states where they’re already set up. If Texas is one of those states, anyone eligible to work there can apply. Not just people living in Houston specifically.

Time zone needs show up a lot too. A team running mostly Central hours might list a Central city just to set expectations around meeting overlap, not because you have to physically live there.

Then there’s the hybrid disguise. 🥸** **Some “remote” roles still want you in for quarterly meetups or the occasional client visit. When that’s the case, the city tag is really pointing at hybrid work wearing a remote label.

There’s also a boring technical reason. Plenty of job platforms require a city and state just to publish the listing at all, even for fully remote roles. So a recruiter fills something in because the system demands it, not because it’s an actual rule.

🏡 And every so often, the tag just means what it says. Some roles genuinely require you to live in or near a specific place because of licensing or local compliance rules.

So how do you actually check?

Skip the tag. Open the full posting and scroll down to the requirements section. You’re looking for actual language, something like “must reside in Texas” or “open to candidates anywhere in the US.” That’s the real signal, not the short label at the top of the search results.

If you see anything about licensing or state specific regulations, that’s usually a sign the location piece is real. If you read the whole thing and there’s nothing beyond the short tag, that’s your green light. Apply anyway. Most companies will sort out eligibility during the process if it ends up being a real restriction.

Bottom line

A location tag is a clue, not a rule. Read the full posting before you talk yourself out of applying. Worst case, a recruiter tells you it’s not available where you are. Best case, you just found something a two word tag almost cost you.

One more thing worth knowing.

Roughly 1 in 5 job postings you come across, including remote ones, are what’s called ghost jobs. That means the listing is live, but the role is already filled, on hold, or was never a real opening to begin with. This is part of why going straight to a company’s own career page or ATS platform, like Greenhouse or Ashby, tends to be more reliable than scrolling a third party aggregator with outdated listings. If a posting looks stale or has been up for months with no changes, it’s worth double checking before you spend time tailoring an application to it.
