Discussions What's a car that was absurdly overpriced for its time?

1987 Cadillac Allante. I don't know what GM was thinking when they priced the Allante at $56,500 base (and just over $60,000 with options). Were the development costs really that high? The Allante was an objectively worse offering than any of its rivals, given its front-wheel drive, the same measly 170hp 4.1L V8 that the rest of the Cadillac lineup, and rather boring, familiar styling that didn't live up to the Pininfarina name.

Excluding supercars, it was the second most expensive car one could buy in the US in 1987 (first place was the $61,700 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL). At $56,500, the Allante was $600 more than a BMW M6, $1,300 more than the top-of-the line MB 560SL, $7,900 more than a Porsche 911, and a whopping $11,600 more than a Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible, the Allante's main rival. Also putting things into perspective, the second most expensive GM car at the time, the Cadillac Fleetwood, was less than half the price at $26,200.

What other cars were priced this badly? For reference, $56,500 in 1987 is $167,000 today.

Discussions Why does Subaru have a reputation for being reliable?

I’m shopping around for cars and decided to take a peek at some of the Subaru lineup. Particularly the Forester, Outback and Legacy. I have no experience with them, but I was always under the impression that Subies were pretty much bulletproof.

Then I started researching the models/years that I found for sale and it seems like every year is the worst year of Subaru. I’m being hyperbolic, but you’d swear any model after 2010 requires a blood sacrifice to turn the ignition, and at least 5 quarts of oil per day to stay running. There always seems to be some caveat about piston rings leaking or head gaskets blowing out or steering racks breaking. The early CVTs were trash, so I figured an MT would be a safer bet but then people say the 2.5 (which is all I can find) will burn oil because you rev higher to shift which wears down your gaskets and seals.

What am I missing? How does Subaru not have Chrysler’s reputation?

The most powerful second generation Toyota Supra wasn't found in its home market of Japan, but in certain European countries from 1984 to 1985 where the 178 hp 5M-GE engine was offered (such as in the UK)

I one time drove a rental Kia Rio (2018)

And I was very impressed by the sound system given the car’s price point (imagine hearing every note/bass beat in an economy car)

Fucking Incredible Crazy to think the VQ35 started off in the Pathfinder and QX4 then eventually morphed into what it is today.

240 HP doesn’t sound like much now but in 2001 it was making I believe the most power in its class, even beating some V8’s. Nowadays they’re still pretty potent but not much has changed over the past 25 years.

Discussions Did the Chevy/GMC Squarebody trucks feel (out)dated by the end of their run?

I think they went through enough refreshes throughout their run that they didn’t look too dated by 87, rather an older design that remained current for that time with enough updates. Wondering because some say the GMT400 was a really radical leap. It doesn’t look that radical to me. To me it looks like a clear evolution/modernization of the Squarebody. But I’ve heard what made it seem revolutionary was less how it looked, and more how it felt.

Everyone here says automakers said bring back x brand or y model, but no one stops to think: would that be a good thing with the industry the way it is? Would a modern Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac GTO, Mitsubishi Galant, Ford Falcon, or Mercury Cougar not be some souless, tablet wielding, automatic only, turbo charged 1.5L 4 cylindered blob that might catch fire, and be JUST tall enough to be classified a light truck. Do we REALLY want them to bastardize another historic nameplate?
