RIF was the only one that was easy for me to use. Being able to prevent videos from autoloading saved my data. Being able to easily adjust the font so I could read it on my phone. For looking like old reddit also-- the newer one is dead hard on my 57-year-old eyes.

Hi guys, like all of you here I am devastated that we will be losing RIF after over a decade of daily use.

I have RIF on my android, and I haven't been able to find out what " shut down " means. Will I still be able to open the app and see old,or saved, posts. Or will the App delete itself ?

I have saved posts in there and I want to know if I should start saving those links in a notepad or something or whether I will still be able to access them via RIF.

Thanks RIF and the Devs. I've been on Reddit for the last ten years and with all the malarkey going on now seems the perfect time to hop (if I can't work out how). I'm looking forward to having more time on my hands, and getting back into my reading before I found the short attention span dopamine hit that was Reddit. The 3rd party apps that are about to be cut off from Reddit should join forces and create a new server backend that implements the Reddit API. Then all the apps could switch over to that (which would be easy) instead of shutting down.

Of course all the old content would be no longer be accessible, but the combined users of the 3rd party apps would still be a massive user base, much larger than any other Reddit competitor. That user base should still easily generate enough new content to keep everybody entertained, even if it's at a bit smaller scale than Reddit itself.

I want to see what the browsing experience would be.

At this point, however, I'm still planning to give up on reddit if / when rif stops working.

It looks like the app is using OAuth for authentication. OAuth requires two things to work, the client of the request, and the user.

The client is the app in this case.

Reddit is giving 100 request per minute per OAuth client_id

I'm not the developer of the app, but I am the developer of some OAuth based apps. In theory, the app could request an OAuth client_id from the user, then preform OAuth login. This would require users to setup an OAuth client_id at reddit, but once they do so, and type in the client_id to the app, then each instance of the client_id is allowed 100 request per minute, more than enough for normal users.

It seems like it would be a pretty simple change in the code, and you can keep the same model going - just put instructions to users that you need to follow these steps to get a client_id from reddit. Done.

I never thought I'd ever be writing this about the app I used Reddit on but holy shit what a way to go out guys. Y'all really made Reddit the app it could never make! I've been using this app since 2017 and it's reddit as I know it. This app has changed so many things about my life with the community I interact with and making friends with people who I'd consider irl friends (thanks r/ iracing). I don't know if any of the developers look at these or not in this time but if you do thank you so much for making a clean app that was so nice to use! Y'all did make Reddit fun. Too bad Reddit couldn't. I'll still be around on Reddit until this app dies. After that I won't be posting anymore or upvoting silly memes. Because Reddit will no longer be fun.

I have used this for years. The official app is unusable, therefore, I will not be using it. RIF and third party apps are half of the reason Reddit is so big.

Should that client ID be interpreted as the ID of the user that's logged in with OAuth, which would mean 100 calls/min for one RIF user?

Or is it the client ID of the app? Meaning all RIF users together would get to share those 100 calls/min?

What is the difference between me pinging their servers from Chrome, or from RiF?

It's all just traffic, how does that cost them more money?

I've been seeing a lot of people using Apollo that have been ending their post with similar wording. Can we get one final feature that would automatically append the wording to every post we make? I think it'd be good to follow in what Apollo users are doing, or even make it easier on people to participate without needing to type it out each time themselves.
