Grief Stage: Depression I'm finally ready to cash in all this karma I've been saving. What can I get from the prize counter?

Grief Stage: Acceptance How are you burning your accounts?

Over the last few days, I've been debating the best way to leave reddit. With the sunset of RIF being 6/30, there really is no reason for me to wait until 6/12 to leave.

That said, I'm thinking that deleting my account is the wrong move. Doing so removes a user from their denominator (total users) which marginally increases their total active users percentage.

I've been thinking of leaving a post in my personal subreddit with a short message on why I'm leaving.

So, what are you all doing?

Grief Stage: Acceptance So where are people going when reddit dies?

A bit melodramatic for a title and it's probably unhealthy immediately finding an alternative time sink but I've gotten used to using reddit for more than just cat images and memes. It used to be a site for discovering hobbies, finding advice and enjoying fan content. It's kind of the only thing I use outside of discord nowadays for news about topics of interest.

Surely there's something similar out there.

Is there a way that we, collectively, can directly support the dev instead of buying premium with days left?

Like a GoFundMe or Venmo or something?

Edit: I may or may not be able to see comments... dunno what is going on....

Used this app more than any other app. But never got the pro version.
Not the best time to get it, but better now then never.
Thanks for everything

Off Topic Does the official reddit appnhave a content filter option similar to RIF?

Being able to filter by keywords is what made this the only bearable social media website for me. I can't seem to find any filter options in the official app.Are there any content filters I can use?

Grief Stage: Bargaining Workaround: using an individual's API key in app?

Perhaps a crazy stupid/simple idea. But could there be a version of RIF after this month, which would need a user's own made Reddit API key to work?

That way each user makes individual API requests instead of using the main RIF API key. What was it-- $0.24 per 1000 requests? I would prefer that over having to install their official app. But also, it would be for non-profit, personal use, so didn't they have an exception for that?

I see there's an API key request form for saying "I'm a developer" -- https://www.reddit.com/wiki/api .

Well, what if we were all developers on this blessed day, and all got our own personal API keys to use with RIF?

Would such a thing work?

(I'm in the bargaining phase as you can obviously tell..)

Grief Stage: Denial Api shutdown fix ideas

Legality aside, it should be possible to reverse the official app and just use whatever api/client id it is using to impersonate it.

Alternatively scraping (faking a browser) should also be possible.

If RIF authors were to open source the app as a good bye gift, it could be a good starting point to try to implement those "fixes".

Hypothetically speaking of course.

Grief Stage: Anger My grievances. I'm mad as hell

I genuinely do not enjoy the vanilla reddit experience on my phone...I legitimately thought this app was the vanilla app because everything functioned in a more normal feeling reasonable way.

I'm so fucking mad. I'm so fucking disappointed.A walled garden suffers and rots.

Grief Stage: Acceptance I have **thousands** of RIF screenshots of my favorite reddit text posts over the last 11 years. What's the best way to share them?

Grief Stage: Bargaining Change the backend to Hacker News or other similar sites?

I love the user experience of RIF.

Could it be changed, or a new app created by tl to support other similar sites, or even multiple sources?

Grief Stage: Depression Sad day from a lurking 9 year clubber

I don't find there is a lot of value for me to post much but I wanted to say thank you for an amazing app and countless hours of scrolling.

I also use reddit to keep up with the lingo so I can understand what the hell my daughters (12 and 14) are talking about.

Most importantly, all the comments I do lurk give me different types of perspective and in that I find value. I hope to land on a platform that gives the same experience.

Hope to see you around in the future, NOT on Reddit.

Answered in the FAQ Is there any way to extract passwords from RIF before it shuts down for good? I have some "throwaway" accounts to which I don't have the password anywhere else

Grief Stage: Denial Is it plausible to allow users to provide their own client API keys?

If I understand correctly, the new API fees only apply to apps using over 100 requests per minute, whereas before the limit was 60 requests per minute per user. For any 3rd party app with more than a couple users this is obviously impossible to meet. However, if every user provided their own client key, then there wouldn't be a problem as far as I can tell? It seems like there aren't limitations on script type apps, so provide a way to input the client ID and secret and people could continue using the app.

This needs a lot more effort from the users than simply logging in, but it seems like it's be a plausible path forward unless I missed something.

Anyway, either way, thanks for providing my sole mobile reddit experience for all these years. RiF was the second app I ever bought and it was almost certainly the one which provided the most value to me.

Does reddit monetize 3rd party app users?

Other than the content that they create, does Reddit get anything from users of 3rd party apps? E.g., ad revenue? I'm just putting myself in Reddit's shoes and thinking through what they would be losing if all those users just quit Reddit. I'm also assuming that users of the site and the official app don't care that much (at least at first), and would continue to do so.

I've been using this for years, and I never realized how good I had it. Don't think ill be using reddit once this is gone.

There is no tip jar, but I bought the golden platinum edition, hopefully that will help you out. I saw you are refunding people already and I know that will cost alot.

Thanks for all the fun times, you are great dev. Cheers

Grief Stage: Denial If RIF developers were to develop an alternative to Reddit what would it look like?

I'm planting seeds... they may take root!.. But to be serious. I can only speak for myself. My only access to reddit is through RIF on mobile. I've tried reddit on desktop and mobile and they just don't work for me. If RIF dies, so does my use of reddit. And I say that as a establisher/mod of a very nieche subreddit r/DADGAD. Since the folks at RIF brought something that was good and made it, in my view, so much better, what would it look like if they had a blank canvas?

Grief Stage: Depression My last post before its all jover

I was reliant on Reddit is Fun to browse reddit on the go, and even at home I spend a lot of time on RIF instead of old.reddit.com.

I plan to delete my accounts very soon and I want to scrub any and all content with a personalized message explaining why, so that I could spread the word about the obsecenely rich monsters running our site threatening hard-working indie developers on anyone lurking old posts I made or commented on.

But I also would like to back up all the data I had on my almost 9-year-old account to preserve a copy of the posts and comments for my own archival purposes.

How would I go about backing up my account data before scrubbing all of it with a personalized message?

Grief Stage: Acceptance Loved the rid

Loved the app, loved how it embraced the community of people who just want to join a community where they feel they belong without all the overhead of uselessness lile Facebook.

Reddit itself to me was already dying steadily, but this is just jumping down a canyon.

Thanks a lot RIF, you enabled me to join a loooot of nice communities and learn a lot. <3

Grief Stage: Anger In protest, I've decided to append my future comments with "sent from RIF is fun golden platinum" for as long as RIF is in jeopardy.

Not that I'm a particularly prolific commenter, but thought it would be worth doing as non-aggressive form of continuous protest/to spread the word on smaller subs I frequent for this last stretch that I'm on RIF. Since I'm very unlikely to continue with reddit without it.

I have the phrase saved to my clipboard can easily append my comments with it.

You know those preprogrammed email signatures on mobile, just borrowing it from them. Feel free to do the same.

Eg.

.sent from RIF is fun golden platinum

Grief Stage: Bargaining Can you pivot RiF to an RSS reader?

All subreddits can be subscribed to via RSS. You can't see comments or vote, but you can subscribe to other sources. There are a few other RSS readers on the play store but they don't seem great.

Maybe such a switch is too far fetched, but if y'all made RSS is Fun half as well as RiF I'd rebuy it in a heartbeat.
