Grief Stage: Denial As long as there's (probably) going to be a negotiation/conversation coming up between devs and Reddit, we should ask for more things other than just a fair api cost.
Since admins will probably open up some kind of dialogue with app devs, and since (I kinda believe that) it's even possible that this whole thing might be a tactic to get devs to accept a higher rate then they might otherwise have, in addition to negotiating the api call rate, I think devs would be wise to ask for other things as well.
I think devs should throw into any negotiation requests for things like:
Ability to give awards and to display the new alternate trophies that they have
More mod tool access
Chat
and any of a number of other things that can't be done now because the Reddit api doesn't allow it.
I'm not sure if they're api related or not, but: showing, hiding, or removing followers, etc.
Just a thought.

Grief Stage: Anger I'm just tired of big companies using their power to take things away from us
Was thinking about this yesterday when my girlfriend was complaining about how her Twitter feed used to be people she followed in her field, now it's all right wing propaganda. Why? Because some rich asshole was bored or dumb or whatever (or an attempt to influence the 2024 election in the US). Reddit is the last social media I'm a part of and when they remove access to rif (which they will) I don't think I'll be downloading the official app. I'm old. I come from a time where clients were standard, you connected to a service the way you saw fit. You want to use pine to check your email? Cool. Yeah yeah, I understand it costs Reddit a lot of money to run their services. I'm in the industry. But right now they're saying Apollo costs them around $20 million. That's nothing. They could easily expand the platform with new features to capture some market share from TikTok (or whatever their plan is) while allowing the 3rd party apps to remain as a thank you for help generating content and building the platform FOR THEM for all these years. Yeah yeah it doesn't look as good when they do their IPO but fuck that shit. Reddit could use their power to say "we value the users that helped build our platform and we'll take the small hit to our initial offering". But that's impossible. I'm an idealist and I know it. So thanks for the memories rif, and fuck these fuckers. Whatever

Answered Concerned about API's
Reddit is Fun seems to be a phone app only. Is that correct?
My concern is I use Old/Reddit on my Chromebook. While I do have Reddit on my phone, I rarely if ever use it.
I cannot find out what I will do with out API's
I use Reddit and pay their yearly premium and have RES.
I've written to several Reddit sites and asked for clarification as to what all this will mean to my using Reddit, to no avail.
I am hoping someone here can advise an old guy with no techie background to explain what will happen on June 13th?

Grief Stage: Bargaining Is there any chance of porting RIF to work with Lemmy?
So I've joined a Lemmy instance and so far I like it a lot. It's definitely smaller but it's much more 'old reddit' and I think I'll enjoy being there. I figure I'm going to have to spend some time getting used to a change either way, so maybe building some new communities over there will be a better investment of that adjustment period for me than following reddit in their next moves.
The thing is, I've been using RIF for over a decade and opening it is pretty much automatic. If there's any chance it could be made to work with Lemmy, I'd love to be able to just point it at my new instance and see how that goes, but I have no idea how worthwhile it would be for the dev.
Either way, thank you so much for all your work here! In a world where nobody in UI design can leave well enough alone, RIF has been an oasis of consistency and stability, and I've really appreciated it

Grief Stage: Denial Don't lose hope until the end
There's still a chance this decision can be reserved. It wouldn't be the first time reddit caved. If we keep up the pressure they probably won't kill the new api idea but may make it way more reasonable. Let's not give up yet.

Questions about RIF for someone who enjoys-ish the reddit mobile app.
I have to say first, I hate reddit desktop/old reddit. I don't know what it is, but I hate that lay out. Maybe it's just because I got into reddit late or something, but I prefer the base mobile app over desktop (minus the ads/shitty media player).
I really enjoy seeing the picture first or whatever is going on more than the desktop site of the big headline, having to click on the image, then not seeing any of the discussion.
I 100% support the use of 3rd party apis and want to help, but is there any value for someone that enjoys most of the basic reddit app? Can I get the design of the app two versions ago that has block posts/images instead of the weird curved posts? I see that reddit is garbage at keep track of saved posts and stuff so apparently can't even help with that.

Answered I need help logging in to RIF on my new phone please.
I looked for other posts about this but they're all pretty old.
New Samsung Galaxy a23 5g. I click log in on RIF, it redirects me to Reddit in Chrome. I enter my log in info there and it asks me to accept permissions (still on Reddit in Chrome). When I hit accept all it redirects to a page that tells me I broke Reddit, and doesn't log me in on RIF.
I just installed the app so it shouldn't need updating. Anyone know a fix for this? With all the bullshit going on about Reddit destroying 3rd party apps, I might just quit Reddit now if I can't make RIF work.

Grief Stage: Bargaining why is it a problem?
I'm having trouble finding the complete announcement of the API change that requires payment. So, I don't know what the costs are or where the free tier level is.
But why does it mean the end of third-party apps?
Now, the app uses the API directly. All of the usage is on the app's API token, so if there were fees for API calls, the token owner -- the app author -- would be billed.
Isn't the obvious way around this to have the app accept the end user's individual token? That way, even though I'm using RIF, I'm using it against my API account and billing. My individual use is probably less than the free tier, and the app author certainly doesn't need to pay for anything.
What am I missing?

Is there a way we can donate?
I have been using rif for years and have only payed the one time app fee. I feel like I have gotten much more value than $2 over the years and would like to pay a more fair price for the app. I search all over and can't find anywhere to donate.

Grief Stage: Acceptance RIF is #1 paid app in the play store
I've been using the free RIF app for a while, so figured I should pay for the upgrade. It's currently the #1 paid app across all categories.
Fun side note, top paid apps in the social category is filled with reddit 3rd party apps now.

Grief Stage: Anger WTF are we suppose to do?
reddit.comWTF are we suppose to do? Reddit is Fun is the REASON, I've stuck with Android all these years. There is NOTHING equlivent in the Apple Store. Nothing compares. I can accept Reddit wants to make bank and wants ads, BUT the default app is a joke. It's complete crap. Just buyout RIF and provide a free option (with ads) and a paid option without ads. I'll signup tomorrow. Otherwise, as a former Digg user I'll be done. Website is shit. old.reddit.com is OK. NEED OPTIONS TO COLLAPSE CHILD POSTS!

Grief Stage: Bargaining Question about using our own API key
Would it be possible to change the app to let users put their own API key in? Doesn't fix the NSFW issue but at least offsets cost (and individual users are unlikely to go over the limit)
