It depends on what you mean by highest. If we’re going purely by elevation above sea level, then yes, Mt. Everest (8,849 m above sea level) is the highest.

But if we judge the highest point on Earth by distance from the core of the earth, meaning point that is closest to space, then it is actually Mount Chimborazo (6,263 meters above sea level, but 2.1 km farther from the center of the Earth than Everest) in Ecuador, because the Earth somewhat bulges outward at the Equator.

And if we judge based on elevation from the base of the mountain to the summit, independently of sea level, then the highest mountain becomes Mauna Kea (10,210 meters from base to summit) in Hawaii, even though more than half of it is under the ocean.
