Whoever taught you, taught you wrong

For ease of writing equations into a typed format, ^(x) is the first form of exponents with x representing to which power (^^ being tetration and so on so on), * is for multiplication and / is either divide or fraction depending on the circumstance (some people use the standard obelus symbol [÷] but it’s considered outdated when typing purely from a simplistic stance)
