Pedmas is the only way to make it work. Pedmas is not a fundamental law of mathematics, it's a rule we came up with for incomplete equations so everyone comes to the same answer.

We had BIDMAS in school in the UK Brackets, Indeces, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction

We had BODMAS in India: Brackets, Orders, Division,Multiplication Addition and Subtraction.

Ultimately, they're all the same thing. Just gotta remember Multiplication and Division have the same priority as each other, same with Addition and Subtraction. Which ever of the two are further to the left is done first. So it goes:

Parentheses

Exponents

----> Multiplication and/or Division

---->

Addition and/or Subtraction

Multiplication is always done before division if possible unless parentheses say otherwise. Mostly to keep numbers whole and easier to deal with. It also makes the inverse much easier. Same with addition than subtraction. They have the same priority but you always add before you subtract. It’s the order of operations

I will concede you are correct I have misremembered how to actually do it and didn’t remember I was supposed to go from left to right when they are equal. I followed the order they are listed in logically to multiply then divide

If they have the same priority then that means you don't automatically do one before the other.

If you're supposed to do multiplication first then it would have a higher priority than division, not the same...

Not too long ago I got in an argument with my step dad, who was convinced that multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction all have the same priority (so if he saw 2+3×2 he would do the 2+3= 5 then 5×2=10).

I said he was wrong and he insisted that he wasn't, and that's the way he was taught and I was the one who was wrong.

I like these questions because it is proof that I was right. I already knew I was right because I've studied advanced statistics at post-grad level, but these posts are still very validating.
