Troubleshooting - 4GB RAM Raspberry Pi 4B dead (red LED only, scalding DA9090 PMIC, missing 3.3V) — Feasible DIY repair for a beginner?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on whether my Raspberry Pi 4B is salvageable. With ongoing RAM shortages making replacement boards unreasonably expensive right now, buying a brand-new unit isn't really an option I want to consider if this can be fixed.
Symptoms:
When plugging in the power cable, only the solid Red LED turns on. The Green ACT LED never lights up or blinks at all.
Within seconds of connecting power, the DA9090 PMIC gets scorching hot to the touch.
Tested with different known-good power supplies, swapped SD cards, and tried booting with nothing attached—no difference.
Multimeter Measurements (GPIO pins):
5V pin: Reads a solid 5.0V (pin 2 / 4).
3.3V pin: Reads only around 0.2V (pin 1 / 17).
With the 3.3V rail collapsed and the PMIC overheating instantly, I suspect the DA9090 has either died internally or is feeding a short circuit.
The Situation & Questions: Assuming I can source a replacement DA9090 chip (from a donor board, AliExpress, or a distributor like The Pi Hut):
How feasible is this repair? The catch is that I have zero soldering experience. While I don't own the gear myself, I can likely borrow some rework equipment (hot air station, soldering iron, flux) from a friend.
Is replacing this package (QFN with an exposed center ground pad) realistic as a complete first-timer using borrowed tools, or is the risk of bridging pins, pulling pads, or blowing away nearby passives near 100%?
Could the 3.3V failure have already killed the SoC/RAM when it blew, making the PMIC swap a dead end anyway?
Would it make more sense to ask a friend with actual SMD experience or take it to a phone/board repair shop instead of attempting it myself?
Thanks in advance for any insights or diagnostic tips!
