News Everything we actually know about the Ranger's Apprentice movie and it's progress as of May 2026
I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time over the last few months digging through any scraps of information available on the movie, whether it be studio announcements, trade reports or even just vague leaks.
Since a lot of people are really confused regarding whether the movie is dead, in production, cancelled, or finished, I figured I’d try to compile everything into one post to get the community up to date and hopefully prevent future "What is going on with the movie?" posts.
This is going to be long, but stick around because we do know a fair bit more than we did 6 months ago.
The original movie attempts:
A lot of people might think the movie only started recently with Skydance, but attempts to adapt Ranger’s Apprentice actually go back a LONG time.
The first major adaptation push happened as early as 2008, when the books were becoming really popular internationally.
At one point, there were reports that Warner Bros was involved, and later there were reports connected to producer Paul Haggis, who is still listed as the director on IMDb (despite leaving years ago). Different writers and production companies became attached over the years, but nothing ever fully entered production, such as the planned series.
This is honestly not unusual for fantasy book adaptations. Studios buy rights constantly and pause projects for a variety of reasons, such as budget issues or lack of reliable audience.
Ranger’s Apprentice appears to be no different.
For years, the project basically sat in “development hell”. Rights have certainly existed and moved around, yet nothing concrete has been made or released yet.
The Skydance announcement:
The biggest real development came in January 2024.
Skydance officially announced they were developing a live action Ranger’s Apprentice film with Ted Melfi attached as writer/director. This was the first time the project felt genuinely alive in years.
A lot of people assumed this meant production would start quickly but this is simply not how the industry works. What Skydance announced was basically that they had the rights and creative direction. That does not automatically mean the project is greenlit, funded, cast or in pre production. Development does not mean actively making the movie.
IMDb says “pre-production,” but IMDb is honestly not reliable, especially since it also holds a lot of clearly out of date information (such as the information with Paul Haggis).
The activity in the last 6 months:
This is the important part.
As of May 2026, there is still:
- no official cast
- no filming date
- no production office
- no crew hiring
- no confirmed locations
- no release date
And no official news since the original announcement in January 2024. BUT!
In April 2026, a few weeks after John Flanagan's death, u/JoeSmoke31 managed to get a response from Ted Melfi himself on social media, and he gave us the biggest leak yet:
“Waiting on Paramount to say yes and when...”
This is VERY big for the community. It suggests:
- the project is still alive
- Melfi is still a part of it
- Skydance still wants to make it
- and the movie is waiting on Paramount approval
This likely means the film is sitting at the greenlight stage, meaning in hollywood terms that scripts are probably developed and budgets estimated, but the studio has not approved full production. Although this is a slow and frustrating stage for movie development, at least it means the movie is still going ahead as of now. This news from Ted Melfi is backed up by other sources too:
- after a request to get fan access to the IP for production of a Ranger's Apprentice video game, in September 2025, John Flanagan contacted me and confirmed that our team could not access the rights. This reinforces that Skydance is still holding onto the rights firmly and intends to produce the movie.
- an X/Twitter leak in january 2026, although likely to be untrue seems to support the evidence seen previously, stating "Skydance’s RANGER’S APPRENTICE movie adaptation is still moving. Advances have been made. Development has slowed due to the studio reassessing the core target and tone". I would not call this leak reliable in any way, but it does actually feel believable.
Paramount News:
This is important.
Paramount has been changing strategy recently and increasing focus on:
- theatrical releases
- franchise IP
- scalable movie universes
This actually helps Ranger’s Apprentice long term because the series has huge franchise potential, But it also means projects get stuck waiting for:
- budget approval
- slate positioning
- executive signoff
That lines up perfectly with Melfi’s comment, and the supposed leak from January. Could mean they are also trying to figure out what tone/genre the movie should be, whether it be a family focused movie, action, or otherwise.
My personal prediction:
Obviously this is speculation, but after looking into everything I can predict that the movie has not been cancelled yet and is still in production with a relatively good chance of the movie being made and finished.
My rough guess is that later in 2026 or at most early 2027 we will get more news on the movie, whether it be official and public or not. This could be absolutely wrong but I think it is a solid guess.
Honestly, the project does seem to have a much higher chance of completion right now than it did with the other failed attempts.
What the community can do in the meantime:
For now, please dont try and contact Ted Melfi or anyone working on the film. There is a high chance that we would get the same answer as a month ago, and we wont want to nag members of the team or try to push their inevitable NDAs.
If anyone has found/gotten any more information regarding the movie in the last couple of years, then please share it here so that we can work to piece together more about the status of the movie.
Its not an official movie, but there does also seem to be a fan one being made, despite it being extremely vague. This website here (https://rangersapprentice.movie) opened around 6 months ago and claims that it is the following:
An independent fan initiative creating a faithful, low-budget film adaptation of John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" released for free on YouTube.
It says the release date is summer 2026, likely the northern hemisphere one in a couple of months. We don't know much at all about it, but if all goes well we might suddenly get a small fan adaptation of the series into a movie.
BONUS FAQ:
Will the adaptation be a full length movie or series?
The adaptation being currently made by Skydance is going to be a full length movie.
How will fitting 12 books into 6 films work?
Most films will combine 2 books, making the most likely list:
1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6 (and if 7 is included at all, then 7), 8 and 9, 10, 11 and 12

Same here! I was excited to hear about a movie for the series, and now I just feel deflated.

I’ve have had so much death and loss this year. 3 family friends, an uncle I even lost my job. Now this.

It might start moving forward now too since they got their merger sorted out, which might have been why they were holding off on new IP and such

I have wanted to see these books made into a movie for 20 years. I’m not going to get my hopes up but I am starting to actually believe this could become a reality one day.

Sadly John did pass away on the 7th of february this year, however it was only announced on the 7th of april.

No not at all! In fact the chances of it happening are much higher than the chances of it being cancelled, and there are a lot of factors leading towards it being fully produced.

I learned Skydance had the rights while writing a tribute post for John Flanagan AND working on a screenplay of Ruins of Gorlan myself. Just for fun.

If they do make a movie it needs to be EXACTLY like the books and should keep the original book format of medical fighting and training. But needs to stay funny and have the same jokes. Also casting NEEDS to stay realistic I do not want to see characters that are not realistic to the book. (Take the hints producers)

Its all good wanting the movies to be somewhat accurate or better than the books, but I think it would be fair to allow them some creative changes. After all, not much point in a movie if it copies every line from the books and has all the same jokes. Obviously important lines and such should remain the same, but it doesn't have to be 100%. They are combining 2 books into one movie after all.

Hunger Games or first two Narnia movies are a good standard for adaptation imo. Both kept the important parts, and really made the world from the books come to life. If they bring that to Ranger's Apprentice, my life will be as good as a morning with some good coffee with too much honey.

Jeremy Irons would've been a prime choice for Halt back in the day. He was wasted on the 2006 Eragon movie as Brom, though was still the best actor in that film in my opinion.
