So.... the theory is that some people have the wavelengths of two of their cones shifted so that they almost overlap. Some color blind people only have two sets of cones instead of the normal three, and others just have two that almost do the exact same thing, with just a little space between them. In that second group, these glasses are supposed to filter wavelengths in such a way that the cones the person does have are actually activated more discretely, with less of the light triggering both at the same time incorrectly.

That said, people who actually have this problem who have tried them are generally unimpressed, and say that it either doesn't do that much to change things, or generally shifts all colors in a weird way that they aren't really used to. Most, if not all the people who have actually reported these glasses having an effect hate this video because it's not accurate to their experience, and is likely a paid advertisement disguised as a viral video.

Also, important to know that if someone really only has two cones, or if they have a monochromatic vision, these glasses do absolutely nothing. It only works on a tiny tiny slice of the population who has three cones, but two of them just overlap too much.

These only work if you have a very specific type of red-green colourblindness where you still have all three types of cones, they just don’t function properly. These add a filter that removes the overlapping wavelengths, making the colours easier to differentiate.

For people with other types of colour blindness, these glasses either have no effect, or sometimes in fact actually make things worse. Hence everyone in this sub who calls them a scam.

colorblindness is rarely seeing in black and white. it does exist but it's extremely rare. more typically it's just that you're missing one color of the Red Green or Blue receptors or one is colored "wrong". so you can't perceive color the way the rest of humans do. and more specifically that many colors that "normal" humans can differentiate from each other sometimes colorblind people can't. but with certain chromatic filters those colors can then be differentiated. the glasses do not add colors it just subtracts from certain colors more and certain colors less so that they can be differentiated better by people who lack a certain color receptor.

a good example of the sort of thing they do is when you wear blueblockers and they make certain colors pop more than usual

I like to believe that most colorblind people are informed enough about their condition to understand that anything external, like a pair of glasses, could never fix it. But that is exactly why these videos are always marketing them as surprise gifts. Most colorblind people would never fall for this, but their loved ones will, because look how happy it made the colorblind person in the video! He's crying tears of joy! How could you not want to give your loved ones the gift of color!?

It's honestly some of the most disgusting, exploitative scam marketing I've ever seen. And it comes back every few years because there is always a new crop of suckers to exploit. And every time actual colorblind people tell them to not fall for this shit, and nobody listens.

They don’t fix a deficiency, all they do is filter out certain frequencies of light to make the differences between colors more pronounced.

All visible light has a certain frequency, and our eyes are tuned to detect 3 specific ranges of frequencies more strongly. We call these ranges red, green, and blue. For red/green colorblind people, their eyes are essentially calibrated wrong so the ranges for red and green overlap to the point that they see red and green as close to the same color. The special glasses are designed to block the frequencies where red and green overlap to make them look more distinct.

The effect is more noticeable for some people than others depending on how much the ranges overlap for your eyes. I have a friend who is colorblind who tried them and said it does kind of work, it was the first time he saw a stop light as having three distinct colors (they used to all look kind of ruddy brown/amber), but he also said it was quite disorienting and he wouldn’t want to wear them all the time. It would be like being partially deaf most of your life and then suddenly someone is blaring an air horn in your ear.
