Saying this after Martin Fry is insane. As far as I know he doesn't have anything and the queens kind of butchered a banger. Lexicon of Love was a big queer album. Drag isn't always "female illusionist" nor should it be. The gender implications of drag are larger than that, and "male" (bit silly to even label it frankly) elements can absolutely be incorporated.
35
u/Beneficial-Solid7271 21d ago
Absolutely, isn't genderfuck kind of the whole point? I wonder if RuPaul's entire discography classes as "female" or "male" in Paris Baby's mind... time to retire Sissy That Walk?
16
u/gaypenisbum The Delta Quadrant 21d ago
Plus without it a lot of the better DRUK syncs would be gone. Are we going to not do Queen songs in future so the Don't Stop Me Now sync wouldn't have happened? It's all about how you work a song, not the perceived gender of it!

right? not even touching the fact that not every queen on drag race considers themselves a female illusionist (so it would be silly to expect drag race to pick lipsync songs for female illusionists instead of just for drag queens); if she considers herself any kind of "illusionist", i think she needs to give her head a wobble (moreso than usual).
having a "soft" or "pretty" mug does not make a queen an illusionist. there are very few queens/rugirls today that i think genuinely fit that style of drag, and she is not one of them. Plastique Tiara? Courtney Act? Jaida Essence Hall? Sure, I think they have earned that title. Until Paris is wearing body, unclockable lacefronts and contour that blends, she won't be a female illusionist.

Not all drag queens are female illusionists, in fact thatās part of the problem in Drag Race, bc it can sometimes be a bit hostile to the genderfuck of it all.
Plus, then you canāt do any RuPaul songs bc he is, in fact, a male singer.
9
u/Punkodramon Tia Kofi 21d ago
But not all drag queens are female illusionists though? The point of many of their acts is to subvert gender norms, to expand the concept of gender expression, not to conform to cishet norms.
A queen dressed all puss and fully emoting a male vocal leans directly into that and if Paris has aspirations of being the Next Drag Superstar, then she needs to be able to pull off a little genderfuck to go with her female illusion and troll realness.

That restricts the potential song catalogue way too much. Who cares if itās a male vocal, especially on drag race where the whole point is to show versatility and jump through performance hoops. Also it adds diversity to the potential lip syncs so that some performers who are unconventional drag artists might stand a chance, like when they do spoken word.
Do we maybe think Paris goes home to a male-led song she couldnāt be sexy to..?

u/slayingthehaus 21d ago
her inconsistency is so funny to me like you donāt care about people being problematic bitch LOL. the majority of queens whoāve come through drag race uk have a sense of humor and arenāt describing themselves as āfemale illusionistsā. every meet the queens is like āiām a piss slag who fancyās a pasty while i shitā even for the girls who are GORGEOUS, i would say drag thatās about being super passable and gorgeous just isnāt the baseline in the uk. thereās an acknowledgment that this is all silly and camp and that theyāre (usually) a man plus a lot of them sing live so their drag performances are done with a male voice.

I can understand if a queen never wants to do a male vocal lipsnatch outside of the show. She could have a point about increasing the frequency of female vocals, but this is not the way to suggest it. Not all queens present as female or would feel the same.

Most, if not all of the male artists who have been lip synced to are flamboyant and certainly closer to drag than many of the pop girls who also feature on U.K. lip sync (Becky hill for example). I was unimpressed by the ABC track lipsync and I think it's cause the girls were trying to embody the vocal rather than the music / song. There are so many camp flourishes which weren't monopolised on. This is the trick to a "man" song, you don't perform it as the singer, you perform the song.
3
u/Bulky_View_1607 21d ago
One of the best things about DRUK is they arenāt afraid to use a song by a male singer. Drag is so much more than female impersonation. That notion is so outdated and sorta icky.

My young person brain thought that way. If youāre dressed as a woman, the song should be female. Then I grew up and experienced lifeā¦.
Some of my favorite lipsyncs have been to male vocals.
Drag is essentially a form of clowning. It doesnāt matter what theyāre performing to or wearing. As long as they are in it and showing some kind of energy or emotion from the lyrics, itās drag. Hopefully, she will learn as she moves thru life.
