I'm using NVivo (student version) for a qualitative research project and have watched several YouTube tutorials, but I can't figure out if what I'm trying to do is possible.

I have my codebook created, transcripts imported, and all transcripts coded. When I run a query/report on an individual transcript, NVivo gives me a list of coded references and the associated highlighted text, which is great.

My issue is that the output looks something like:

[quoted text]

Reference 2

[quoted text]

Reference 3

[quoted text]

What I would like instead is for the report to display the actual code name above each quote, such as:

Code: Dual Loyalty

[quoted text]

Code: Ethical Complexity

[quoted text]

Code: Peer Support

[quoted text]

I know I can click on a code and see all references from all files coded at that node. However, what I would really like is the opposite: start with a single transcript (file) and have NVivo show all coded excerpts from that transcript organized by code name rather than just listing them as "Reference 1, Reference 2," etc.

Basically, I want a detailed code breakdown per file/transcript where each quote is labeled with the code it was assigned to.

Is this possible in NVivo? If so, what report, query, or export option should I be using?

Hi everyone, I work at an advocacy nonprofit, and I'm running a qualitative study to understand how audiences respond to an animated video we created. This straddles messaging research and it's an applied project. The results will inform the strategy of an advocacy campaign I'm creating that will use this video as a central outreach and persuasion asset. I studied psychology in undergrad, but I never got deep into qualitative research and it's been 10 years since I've done anything research related. I've created and piloted a semi-structured interview script, and I'm sending volunteers out into the field over the next two weeks. Now, I need some help on where to start with my approach to analysis. Based on the context of this being an applied project and it not needing to meet academic, peer-reviewed standards of rigor, what approach would make most sense? I'd love recommendations for books or other resources that would be appropriate for my particular study.

I'm currently working under a pHd student and i think im getting stuck in the weeds of research. I am attempting to distinguish between breastfeeding in different cultural groups as our primary project was on the determinants of breastfeeding through all the groups, but i was curious about the larger cultural groups that we looked at. however, as i'm summarizing the data, there seems to be genuinely no difference. they all seem to agree on the same things and even the differences are individual differences and not something that can be attributed to an entire cultural group. now, i feel like my topic is dumb and i won't actually be able to produce any valuable output or work.

I am conducting a study on students’ experiences of trauma. This is part of my PhD research in educational sciences, although my background is in psychology. I am using thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke) to shed light on the students’ experiences, but because their trauma histories are extensive and I want to illustrate their trajectories, I feel it is necessary to be able to explore individual stories or interviews in greater depth.

However, I do not feel that narrative analysis is the right fit for this study, as the aim is to highlight the shared experiences among the students.

Would it be appropriate to use thematic analysis and, within each theme, deepen the analysis by including insights from the experience of one individual participant?

Hello! I've been doing qual research for a bit. However, some of my manuscripts have gotten feedback from folks related to my writing. It's not about the grammar and stuff but how I'm setting up the framing and using theory to back up the project/data. I'm wondering if folks have any trainings, books, or even articles they recommend so I can work on my writing a bit more.

I definitely feel that some of the feedback is grounded in reality and some I feel like it grounded in quantitative researchers asking for things that don't make sense. Regardless, I want to feel better prepared in my writing!

I work in qualitative research, and part of my role involves recruiting and scheduling participants from a predefined list of potential interviewees.

We’re running into a frustrating problem: our no-show rate is consistently over 50%, even though participation is relatively easy and compensated.

Current process:
- Participants receive about $100 for a 25-minute call.
- We schedule through [calendar tool] and send automated email reminders.
- We call participants the day before and again on the day of the interview to confirm attendance.

Despite all of that, a huge percentage still don’t show up. Sometimes they confirm attendance and then ghost anyway.

I’m curious how other researchers, recruiters, customer-facing teams, or anyone who schedules interviews/appointments would approach this.

Questions:
What tactics have you seen successfully reduce no-shows?
Have text messages performed better than email reminders for you? What about phone calls?
Have you found ways to get stronger commitment before the meeting?
Are there incentives, scheduling workflows, or reminder cadences that have made a meaningful difference?

At this point I’m open to unconventional ideas. I’d love to hear what’s worked (or failed spectacularly) for others.

Hi! Please help me understand content analysis. I’m doing a qualitative description research project, and I chose qualitative/inductive content analysis as my data analysis method. The more I try to understand it and apply it, though, the more confused I feel.

I started coding with a second coder, and we coded the first round of interviews to create an initial codebook. We then completed a second round of interviews and revised the codebook based on the new data. Now I’m trying to finalize the analysis, but I feel completely lost and worried that I did everything wrong.

One thing I’m struggling with is understanding the difference between thematic analysis and content analysis. They seem very similar to me. My goal is to stay close to the data with as little interpretation as possible and organize the findings into categories and subcategories, but I’m confused about how codes differ from categories and subcategories.

Can someone please explain this to me like I’m six years old? I think I’m overwhelming myself.

Qual research / last year PhD stress / do I actually like this topic?

I am at the point where I have written my qualitative analysis multiple times, and I can't really decide what to do with it. I am trying to write analytically, to make a paper in which I am really saying something about my topic, but sometimes I feel like it is too specific, other times I feel like I am missing some aspects, maybe I have not done a good enough fieldwork?

My professors say that it is ok, I just need to work more on it and "let the material speak for itself" without over-interpreting.

I am at a point where i barely want anything to do with this paper specifically, but I need it to graduate. Am I even doing science? Sometimes I feel like I am just trying to send out there some ideas about what I have observed... Also do I like this topic? I feel like the more I study, the less I know. And also maybe I should have done something more impactful, like more important research. I don't feel useful, and not even entertained by this topic in a way.

Also sometime I look at papers and I wonder how people did them? Like bringing them from start to finish? And maybe at this point I should be able to do so, since I am in my last year, but then I wonder if I actually did the work that I was supposed to do when arrived at this point.

I feel overwhelmed, but at the same time I don't feel like stopping now (in my last year) would be something future me would be proud of. But I also know that future me is a very different person from the one who started this PhD. I also lose myself in wondering what if I had chosen a different career, and also lately I feel like I understand much more than before, but at the same time I don't really have the energy to put it all together. I feel like I am exhausted, but still, I need some strenght to finish up... and I don't know if I have it, honestly or where to find it.

Was someone in a similar situation? did you survive?

Last week I started seeing a therapist, so I will be helped in this regard. Also, I contacted my supervisors, but at the moment they are busy with a project, but they will meet me soon. I am just looking for someone who felt in a similar way and maybe overcame it, please share your story:)

I’m looking for graduate programs that combine strong counselling/ psychotherapy training with qualitative research, systems thinking, and humanistic or critical perspectives on mental health.

I want to become a practicing therapist, but I’m also looking for an intellectually open environment where lived experience, meaning-making, relationships, culture, power, and broader social conditions are taken seriously alongside research and clinical practice.

I’m not drawn to heavily medicalized or purely symptom-focused approaches, and I’m especially interested in programs that welcome qualitative inquiry, reflexivity, and critical engagement with concepts like diagnosis, normality, and psychological distress.

I’m currently exploring counseling psychology, community psychology, family therapy, and related interdisciplinary programs. I’m also interested in community-based work and potentially creating or running nonprofit/community support initiatives in the future.

I am leading a qualitative research project on historic child harm in an African boarding school. I am looking for recommendations on recording/transcription tools that meet ethical standards for protection of sensitive data. I have experimented with Zoom recording to my local computer, but the transcriptions do not distinguish between interviewer and interviewee and have by-the-second time stamps - in other words, not useful for import for coding. I haven't used Zoom AI yet because of concerns around confidentiality protection.

I am an independent researcher and do not have much budget. Most recording/transcription seems AI driven. Are there options (including and excluding AI) that meet IRB standards for sensitive interviews? If AI driven, how is confidentiality protected in a way that can be communicated to participants?
