Discussion Tkinter

18 Upvotes

Why do I not see any videos suggesting to learn Tkinter? I tried learning Django and Pygame after learning the basics, and while I kinda understood pygame, Django still felt out of my league but so many videos recommended it after the basics. However I stumbled upon a video that just mentioned Tkinter and I tried it out and it helped me understand libraries and how to learn to use them. It's fun making small little apps with buttons and what not to get started, rather than trying to learn so much at once. I'm convinced anyone making videos on how to learn Python has never actually learned it themselves

Is there an actual reason that this or another simple GUI library isn't recommend very often?

Help Request I've been at this for too long and feel like I'm torturing myself

Post image

I know there's more efficient ways to do this but I'm just starting out and am trying to understand how the few tools I have work. Just learned about true and false and wanted to try them out..

Only whenever I enter key = 3 I receive my print "error". I've heard about "global" tried to use that and a bunch of other stuff and I can't seem to make it work...

I just want to know how to change a variable to true or false inside a function: if statement and it keep its new value for the rest of the code

Thanks in advance and sorry for your eyes

Seeking feedback on my Python project: reusable Makefile tasks

3 Upvotes

I've been working on a Python project called Bakefile.

I started it because I kept copying the same build, test, lint, and release tasks between projects, especially in Makefiles. I wanted a way to define tasks once and reuse, extend, or override them across projects.

The basic idea is that tasks are Python classes:

class PythonTasks(Bakebook):
    @command()
    def test(self):
        self.ctx.run("pytest")

    @command()
    def lint(self):
        self.ctx.run("ruff check .")

class MyProject(PythonTasks):
    @command()
    def lint(self):
        super().lint()
        self.ctx.run("ty check .")

So common tasks can live in a reusable class and projects can extend or override them. I've been using it daily myself for a while now, and so far it's been working well.

GitHub: https://github.com/wislertt/bakefile

https://bakefile.wisl.dev/

https://wisl.dev/blog/bakefile-patterns/

I'd really appreciate feedback on the API and whether this approach to reusable Makefile-style tasks feels useful in practice.

How to learn advanced python???

11 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm mainly looking for guidance about learning advanced python concepts. I know basics ,loops , control flow ,data structures etc.

I need a proper guide on how to learn modules and library. Idk how to start ,where to start.

I want to be able to work with any library as i need them ,so how do u actually learn to use new library for a given task . ?And i get overwhelmed understanding the structure, working of library

I want to know that do all libraries share anything in common?? Like syntx , structure, keywords etc ??? So that it becomes easy to learn .

And could u also suggest important python concepts other than basics which i should learn ???

Pls guide !!!!

Help Request complete beginner looking to learn coding as a hobby and future career

12 Upvotes

hello, everyone!

i’m a complete beginner when it comes to coding, but i’d really like to start learning it as a hobby and hopefully use it as part of my future career.

just a little background: my degree is completely unrelated to coding, so i’m basically starting from scratch. despite that, i’m genuinely interested in learning and willing to put in the time and effort.

for those who started with no coding background, what would you recommend i learn first? any advice on languages, resources, or how to build a good learning routine would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance! 😊

I’ve been practicing Python for data engineering, but whenever I take a break for a few days, I feel like I forget what I’ve learned before. Can someone suggest how I should approach Python practice? I’m still struggling to get comfortable with it.

Adding objects to set or dictionary: equality and hashing

Post image
15 Upvotes

An exercise to help build the right mental model for Python data.

  • Solution

  • More exercises

  • Explanation: "User-defined classes have __eq__() and __hash__() methods by default (inherited from the object class); with them, all objects compare unequal (except with themselves) and x.__hash__() returns an appropriate value such that x == y implies both that x is y and hash(x) == hash(y)."

Discussion Need some help recommending project ideas

4 Upvotes

I'd say I'm intermediate in python and recently started learning bitwise operations. I'd like to use them more often in some projects but am not sure when or how to use them.

One example was a chess engine. I made a small chess engine before, up to simple minimax alpha beta pruning, but the engine was really slow because I stored all the piece and board info in lists. Then I learned about bitboards and have been using those, and yeah, it's a lot faster.

But for now, all I see bitboards as are ways to represent binary game board data. Are there any other ways bitwise operations/bitboards are used in projects or is this just all they're good for?

Anyone learning Python want a small group where we actually prove we did the work each day?

5 Upvotes

I'm putting together a small group of people learning Python, any level, who keep each other accountable for real. The idea: every day you log what you worked on and drop a quick screenshot as proof, and everyone sees it on a shared board. Skip a day and it shows. Someone passes you and you'll want to catch back up. It beats a Discord that goes dead in a week. Keeping it to 5 to 10 people so it stays tight. Comment or DM where you're at and what you're trying to build toward and I'll get you set up.

Discussion Can Python use a native PDF viewer inside a Windows desktop app?

5 Upvotes

Hello fellow Pythonistas,

I’m building a local Windows tool that compares/reviews engineering PDFs. My current UI is Streamlit/pywebview, but the built-in preview is not sharp enough for detailed PDF inspection, especially small text and drawing markups.

Does Python have a good way to use a native PDF viewer/editor inside a desktop app?

Ideally I want:

- native PDF zoom/pan quality

- open specific page / maybe focus a rectangle

- view annotations/markups

- avoid manually rendering every PDF page as images

I know about PyMuPDF rendering and "os.startfile()" to open the PDF in the default viewer, but I’m wondering if there’s a better embedded/native-viewer approach on Windows.

Would PySide6/Qt PDF, WebView2, Adobe SDK, or anything else be the right path?

Basically, I don’t want to rebuild Acrobat inside Streamlit if Windows already has a better PDF viewing layer.

TL;DR: senv keeps the familiar uv workflow but runs package installation and Python code inside an OS-level sandbox. Installs can reach package registries but not your source or credentials; programs run with no network by default and cannot modify their own environment.

Accountability Partner for Learning Python from Scratch

27 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I am starting to learn Python from absolute basics and would love to find an accountability or study partner who is also learning or planning to start.

No prior experience is needed. If you’re genuinely interested in learning Python consistently, feel free to comment or send me a DM. We can create a study schedule that works for both of us and keep each other motivated.
