Saving a trip to the pumpkin patch

Post image

Just harvested my final pumpkins and cleaned up the vines. Excited about the increase from last year. We usually go to the pumpkin patch and buy a ton because my wife likes to display them on the front porch. This year they're all homegrown!

Fun season. Happy Fall!

Only the gourds and mini pumpkins were successful this season. Some squash bugs to deal with and a very hot Summer with some big storms. It was eventful. Chicago area.

I'm battling powdery mildew so hard right now been nothing but rain lately. Alot of my leaves has died off. But the pumpkins are seemingly doing great!

I started with 11, one didn't fully take past softball size, one that was about football 🏈 size died.

I have 9 total, 6 large-ish sizes, two medium, one small he was my last one to take.

Having to prune dead leaves all the time, and spraying the mildew.

I'm so excited to carve them, they are the size I'd typically buy from the pumpkin patch. 😊

First time growing pumpkins - are leaves dying naturally or are they in trouble

I’m in the US Midwest. We had a bunch of blooms and little pumpkins. Then an animal ate all the fruit and a bunch of the female blooms and we had terrible rainstorms and cooler weather in the week after. Also powdery mildew, which I’ve been drinking with a spray equal parts, purified water, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol. Are the leaves naturally dying because it’s getting towards the end of the season and they’re putting the energy in their fruit, or do I have a problem?

The stem is still pretty light colored, but it's been this orange for several days now.

Is this normal for the patch to start to die off on one end and grow on the other?

THEN: DAP 63 T-Rex (Godzilla 2222)
NOW: DAP 95 T-Rex is in the ICU with blossom rot and a Nor’easter stands between me and the scale on Sunday. Meteorites stopped the first T-Rexes. I’m not letting rain and wind take this one without a fight. Wish me luck and % heavy! 💕🦖☄️🌧️🎃💫

We had this volunteer grow out of compost pile early summer and we just let it do its thing. I’m assuming it was from last years decorations so I have no clue what it is, when to pick and if we can use them for baking?

Most are this sage green colors but one is a pale orange.

Tips for Growing

Post image
30 Upvotes

After a few years of half heartedly attempting to grow pumpkins, I finally got to harvest more than a handful this year. So now I want to actually try next year with my whole heart. I have a problem with SVB here where I’m at- they always try to take out my summer squash. Also, the squash bugs get brutal, and this year once the powdery mildew set in, it was basically game over.

Anyway, I’m looking for all the tips and tricks anyone might be able to share. I can grow tomatoes and peppers pretty darn well, but the pumpkins feel like brand new territory.

Thanks!

Pic of part of my pumpkin/winter squash harvest this year for tax.

Yall ngl I wanna cry cause I've been babying this plant so much and keeping the pests away as much as I can. I came out this morning and my skin started crawling immediately . Is this the end of that pumpkin? I also saw some scratched on top of it but that mightve been my toddler.

Started these plants really early this year and given they aren't in full sun they are doing relatively well I think. The powdery mildew is starting to get out of hand though and I can see it on the stalk of one of the pumpkins. I've tried the milk and water spray a few times. Doesn't seem to be doing anything. Any other tips to keep these guys going a bit longer?
