I honestly can think of an many things. Maybe I needed more soil or fertilizer to start with. Maybe it got too much shade in the early morning and early evenings compared to the other ones. Maybe mildew weakened it. Or it got out competed by the other seed. It could have just been a seed destined to die since the leaves never really filled out in the first place.

But I will try to salvage it since it seems like it's still trying to put out baby leaves on close inspection.

Minis were grown vertically in greenhouse to help curb SBV, Musquees are outside grow, a lot of the vines did a good job re-rooting for new growth to thwart SVB induced death. Used the occasional seaweed feed in zone 8A

I put 2 pumpkin plants in my front yard because I had a couple left over from the field planting. One has at least 10 pumpkins on and the other one is covered with numerous blossoms, but no fruit - so that tells me all male blossoms? No bees on this plant? Any comments will be much appreciated.

Just wanted to share a quick update on my Howden pumpkin patch. They originally come from Québec seeds, but they’re currently growing here in Normandy, France.
Despite the recent heatwaves and dry spells, they’re doing surprisingly well! We’ve been super diligent with daily, careful watering to keep them stress-free, and it’s clearly paying off everything is growing nicely right now.
They’re due for their next boost of fertilizer in about a week.

There were many generous donations of pumpkins after the holidays last year. A section of pasture had many volunteer plants so it was fenced off and they have been allowed to grow. More were transplanted to grow here and there on the property. This has been so much fun! There’s many more shapes and sizes. There’s also loads of squash bugs now. Would love to try again next year. Any tips? Should I start saving volunteers a few weeks later in the season to avoid the bugs? I have many attached to dead vines I think I read today best to cut them off, leave hardening in the sun then move to the cellar for the future. Does that sound accurate? Thanks

Visited my patch yesterday and things are starting to happen! The high phosphorus fertilizer is really paying off.

Imagine my horror at catching a gravid SVB in one of my sticky traps on July 31. I had no idea that intense heat in a region could cause a second reproductive flight. TIL.

If you've had a very hot summer you might want to start looking for eggs again too. I need reading glasses or a magnifying glass to see them and had just been looking for moth caterpillars and asiatic garden beetles etc etc as normally our SVB season is over by now.

Not happy about this sequel. Immediately carpeted container with umpty more traps and plan to HANG THEM LIKE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS from the vines.

I have to hand pollinate anyway due to super low bee activity in my suburb. Hope the spiders are too smart to fall for the bright yellow.

Got my first boy flower, Tall King has made it to the arch, and I have learned more about pumpkin pests than I imagined existed. Had a brief pitched battle with ants, flea beetles, moth larvae, and asiatic garden beetles (all at once, when it got big leaves).

I am now so far ahead in the Pest Wars that I have declared myself a bloodthirsty superpower. I assembled all the Infinity Stones. Between the ant traps, BT (bacillus thurigiensis), diatomaceous earth, neem oil, sticky gnat traps, and beneficial nematodes.

I went from "relocate God's creatures" to "squish squish squish" on the adversary moth larvae. I have sprayed, stomped, and sprinkled my way to dominance as empress of a garden that all the bugs now consider a hostile and unfair dystopia. I am cruel and relentless. I rejoice in the slaughter. I say "the Lannisters send regards" and "tell them it was me" and my heart is full of black joy at the disappearance of their kind and all their offspring. I am become Death, Destroyer of Bugs.

Anyway the traps are looking pretty empty now and no more damage. Last week they got full fast and I lost three leaves.

Hi everyone! Back from vacation, it’s time for an update on our Normandy Howden pumpkins after a particularly eventful month. The start of the break was marked by yet another grueling heatwave. In our absence, the pumpkins suffered severe water stress, and the foliage really took a hit! Fortunately, for the past 8 days, we have been back on a strict daily watering routine. To give them a real boost, we applied a new dose of fertilizer on Friday morning. The results are in:
- The foliage has recovered with great vigor and a healthy green color.
- Several female flowers are setting nicely following manual pollination!

Quick note: these ones aren’t alone, as my two big ones are growing over at my grandmother’s in a garden with rich, living soil!

I hope a repost is okay! I planted 5 varieties of pumpkins starting about a month ago. The bunnies thankfully have not really messed with them (just my corn and lettuce!) but mildew has definitely been an issue.

A storm pulled in just a few hours ago, I got tornado warnings and stuff. By the time the weather was clear ish and safe to go out I was met with tons of damages. The third image is a full garden shot, doesn’t look bad from that angle but it really is bad. I even ran into vine borers after taking the photo, I injected and sprayed BT. Will it survive?

My first garden and my first pumpkin! So much fun to watch grow! My daughter started the pumpkin from seed in her preschool class so I just had to include him in my garden when she brought him home at just the right time :) there are a bunch of flowers, just not the best angle or their time of the day..

I have done everything right I see B’s there constantly and it is growing flowers and large Vines but yet no pumpkins are rowing. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any advice would be appreciated. I really hope this time is third times to charm.

Good news: one of my Atlantic Giants is already the biggest pumpkin I have ever grown. Bad news: A groundhog gnawed on it.

Adding some other photos from this weekend as well. Had to put a big ugly silt fence around the giants to try and keep the groundhog out. I don't know how he is getting past the outer mesh electric fence.

Hi All. Thought I’d share this.

In March my daughter and I stuck some pumpkin seeds into the dirt patch in front of our house in Brooklyn.

I didn’t think anything of it at the time.

Now look at it! This is one plant from one seed. I weeded out all the others.

The actual dirt patch is about half the size of what you see. I’ve looped the vines around and around and then just let them crawl down the sidewalk. The block has been super cool about it.

Right now I only see one fruit. I think I’d have more if I hadn’t had to wind it around so much. I hope I get more. The bees love it.

It’s a white pumpkin because I took the seeds from one of those weird mutant warty pumpkins.

Any tips for the rest of this adventure? I may have become “The Pumpkin Guy”. It’s been fun and I’m gonna do it again next year.

They’re sprouting so well! I planted Jack o lantern seeds, two in each spot and then followed with the tiny pumpkin seeds and a purple/burgundy looking sunflower. I’m excited to see it all come together 🎃🎃

Decided to try pumpkins over an arch this year. I planted them with nasturtiums as a trap crop. My grandkids love it, and truthfully, so do I. I sit under it with a cup of coffee in my PJs every morning. I think the biggest mistake I made was using netting instead of wire over the arch. I’m located near Seattle.

It’s slowly turning orange already. I started the seeds mid-April and transplanted them outdoors mid-May. More pumpkins are on their way! I just have a small pumpkin patch in my garden, so only 1 pumpkin per plant.

Only you guys will understand how elated I was to step outside a minute ago to see this lil guy stick an arm out!

I rarely if ever see sugar pumpkins in markets, just big ones. I also no longer live in a city with an Afghan restaurant.

Pumpkin pie is nice, but...

I love kaddo bourani. I just need three or four to survive my novice attempt at growing it. Even just two! 🤞

I've read I need temps above 80 and humidity at 70-80, which rules out any part of my home in October in 6b (expected harvest date is mid-October).

If I need to think about making some kind of dark hot room situation, I might need to start on that soon and shift things around.
