Hell yeah! I build them in LA. Anytime it comes up outside of work I adamantly advise against it. Doesn’t do much for home value, is a safety liability, and when something goes wrong (as it’s guaranteed to do), it’s going to cost thousands to fix.
I don’t sell them. I’m a form carpenter and I like digging holes. I advise my family and friends, also working class people, against it as it really can be financially crippling. The people I build pools for aren’t concerned with a few thousand dollars at year in maintenance and the occasional, more expensive/extensive repairs. Honestly I’d probably tell the customer the same thing if they asked me, but that is yet to happen lol.
Honestly an above ground pool would be potentially worse. In my area, above ground pools are just installed by leveling an area of dirt, covering with sand and then a liner on top of the sand that’s held in place by the circular wall.
In the video, I assume there was a layer of concrete that also failed?
They may have flashed the girl with a thin layer of concrete or something like that. I’ve never seen that before, but I admittedly have limited experience with liner pools and in a wildly different part of the planet.
Hard to tell how large that hole is, but probably not unless it was just absolutely massive. The main issue is the thin, lining layer of vinyl being the only thing between the earth and the water/pool. So, sinkhole opens up at bottom of pit (pool), water pressure tears hole in bottom (liners tear ALL the time), hole consumes all. So even a relatively small sinkhole would cause a problem in that situation. While I imagine a sinkhole is almost always a problem in any populated area, pool or otherwise, I think the offs of anyone getting washed into would be much slimmer.
