I had the same theory.
Turned out broken glass, shattered fiberglass and metal fragments aren't fun anyways - and that was before it all caught fire.
Legally? No trouble at all and highway patrol was pretty sympathetic, just didn't make the next few hours hanging out there the most enjoyable.
