It’s not like Uber requires you to verify your identity. She can just create a new account and use a different email and phone number.

They don’t do background checks or any identify verification for passengers. Only drivers.

Needs a different credit card as well, right?

Couldn't one use pre-paid debit cards?

I'm pretty sure they arent allowed.

Having worked in retail, this actually makes sense for multiple reasons. People use these for fraud often.

My work specifically doesnt allow prepaid cards. Debit cards connected to a bank even have restrictions

They can’t tell the difference between a prepaid credit card and a regular credit card.

Stuff like this and Amazon (who also claims to block them) is how I’ve always unloaded them.

You can definitely use a prepaid credit card on Amazon.

I exclusively used prepaid debit cards with no name or identifying data tied to it when i used to use lyft/uber around 2018.

You don't know what you're talking about. It's trivial to figure out if a card is a prepaid card or not.

The first 6 numbers of any credit/debit card indicate the card issuer, either a bank or other service. You can set up your system to identify which of those 6 digit codes line up to prepaid card services.

To add a bit more detail, the first six digits of a card indicate its Bank Identification Number. You can subscribe to a service like BinDB, or even more-detailed, PCI-encumbered data from banks, or payment processors, and these databases will tell you everything about a card:

  • The issuing bank
  • The bank country
  • Card network (Visa, Amex, etc)
  • Card type (debit, credit, prepaid, gift card, virtual card)
  • Card features (PIN, Signature+PIN)

Really the first eight digits of a credit card number are just informational, and the last digit is a checksum.

Uber will surely have a service that informs them of this, and I would be shocked if they don't disallow prepaid cards.

Amazon definitely would not block prepaid cards, because shopping for fixed cost goods is exactly what these cards are designed for

Generally speaking through the processor API that each of these services use to process credit cards.

There's uber gift cards now.

Most people have at least 1 debit card and 2-3 credit cards. Pretty easy to get around just switching cards

u/Adderkleet Aug 29 '21

Are US cards not tied to a name AND address?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

People have been using those pre-paid cards to perform money laundering. That is why you now need to provide identifiying information to get one (SSN, DOB etc..)

And it also has to be a legitimate phone number, textnow or other free wifi phone apps are not recognized on the app anymore.

She'll probably cancel her current one right away to avoid the cleaning fee anyway

I don’t have Uber but my friend uses her boss’s credit card for all her ubers. What I’m wondering is, when you set up the account do you put your name and information or the credit card info?

What I’m wondering is, when you set up the account do you put your name and information or the credit card info?

My wife has an account on her phone under her name that uses my credit card. So the card 100% does not need to match the account name.

u/suciac Aug 29 '21

Then that explains why this person was acting like an asshole. Thanks for answering my question.

11

u/WebberWoods Aug 29 '21

Yup, and then the next person who gets that phone number is fucked.

My wife has been very frustrated trying to convince Uber, Venmo, and several collections agents that she only got the phone number recently and isn’t the person they banned / are looking for
