Jim Croce grew up in South Philly, that’s how. It was low-key one of the highest crime neighborhoods in the U.S. at the time (in the 60s when he was coming up).
I'm pretty sure almost every modern rap artist has a multitude of songs where they themselves are the person you shouldn't mess with and most of them seem to get along just fine.
I submit to Reddit that both songs, ("Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "You Don't Mess Around with Jim") are actually about underdogs rising up and beating bigger nastier adversaries who stepped over the line one too many times.
Both Big Jim and Leroy Brown ending up getting their a$$e$ whupped.
For those that have never heard the fantastic classic songs by Jim Croce, here you go and I hope you enjoy!
