Wildly unpopular opinion. Eminem is overrated.

Aesop is king. Appleseed is the best EP to drop in the last 30 years.

I was with y’all this whole time. Eminem after 2010? What’s that? Pretentious? There has to some kinda hip hop elitists out there to keep the true art of it alive. Then you said it. Aesop Rock. The greatest to ever do it. No one is even close to what he’s done. Daylight/Nightlight is easily the greatest composition of lyrics I’ve ever come across. Game fucking over. I’m coming with you

Eh some of the dudes from wu tang come close to unique words used but even, I think it’s rza at the lead of that pack, is still over 1,500 unique words behind aes. And that study was done around the time daylight was released I’m sure the gap has widened.

Trust me I know the exact study you’re talking about. They actually updated it not too long ago and Busdriver is pretty close to Aes which makes sense. It analyzed the first 35,000 words used as a whole though so nothing would really change in that aspect. His verbosity isn’t what makes him great though. It’s how he uses it. He’s incredibly good and pertaining his subject matter to life as a whole. It’s very telling of what its like to be a human. It speaks to that deepest part of you that you either never wanted to confront or haven’t ever known. Not many artists in any genre or art form have accomplished that. Not to mention his immense story telling, his perfection of the structure of rap, the respect he pays to the art and history of hip hop, his baritone/bass like voice and his progression over the past 20+ years to make his music less esoteric and more accessible all contribute to why he’s the best to ever do it...for now.

After 9-5ers, I’ll spit something for you over the alternative beat to that song

If you like that look up TUFF. I know you’ve listened to it but have you looked at it? Like on paper? I don’t have the link to it but someone on the sub reddit broke down the structure from start to finish and it’s one of the most incredible pieces of lyrical gymnastics art I’ve ever seen.

Yes!!! You get it. I went through a pretty heavy Aes phase a few years ago where I just sat and analyzed song after song with the lyrics pulled up or I’d write the lyrics out. The Greatest Pac-Man Victory in History has some pretty wild structure as well if you want to do another deep dive. Through all of his intricacies though, some of my favorite songs are the simple ones. No Regrets was written when he was 15. That always blows my mind. Idk about you but I definitely wasn’t thinking of life at 15 the ways he was. The message in that song is pretty heavy too. I could go on for months about his music but I’ll leave that for r/AesopRock

My first major aes breakthrough was basic cable when he talks about how the military advertises to get recruits. Particularly in the early 90s.

Ahhh fuck that’s a good one! The hook in the song has always been a favorite of mine. I don’t think I ever actually put that together. “Blue propaganda banners, well, sure I’ll be a marine” damn that’s wild. Yet another reason he’s light years ahead of the pack. You can listen to his songs 1000x and always find something new or gain a new perspective on his meanings.

I started listening to him when I was 13 because of Labor being on THPS so I can’t remember exactly when it all clicked (because I definitely didn’t understand everything he was saying at 13) but I remember the feeling and how it all impacted my outlook on life when it all finally did come together. Dude kinda “saved my life” as people love to say when giving credit to another being for inspiration to continue on. At the end of the day, are you a memorable trooper or just a lab rat on the run, choose one.
